I love this SO much!

Strictly speaking, repeating defamation is still defamation - a straight quote is not a defence. Context needs to be given for it to be a report in the public interest.

Kemi’s words I think were spoken, therefore defamatory, but it’s actually the paper that’s committing libel by writing them down and publishing them (“in a form capable of permanence”), and is generally treated as the more serious of the two.

It’s very difficult to stop politicians spouting rubbish unfortunately, but you should at least be able to stop papers reporting it as fact.

This is clearly damaging nonsense, but the problem is, in order to stop this kind of “news” piece without proper press regulation, someone needs to sue them for libel, and the people being libelled are a large disparate group without the means to do so. It’s a calculated risk to sell papers.

I have read several sources claiming that the main issue with data centres is that no one is taking the time to mitigate the environmental nightmare because of the urgency to leap on the gravy train and maximise profits. I don’t know if that’s true, but it could create an opportunity if we grasp it.

As an ex smoker, I agree about all of that! And I’m aware of my raging hypocrisy because I started smoking at 12, but I’m honestly alarmed that so many kids are vaping and using oral nicotine etc. I can still see the attractions of starting smoking, but the nicotine, like the tar, is not one.

“Happy” by Derren Brown. Sounds incredibly unlikely I know. If it reassures you at all, it’s not a “self help” book. But it helped me recalibrate my sense of perspective and feel “less hopeless” (is that the same thing as “more hopeful”?) after Covid. Actually I could do with a refresher now …

I appreciate that, her having a spinal abscess, she must be in a great deal of pain, but this is quite extraordinary. A psychologist would have a field day. (Her own son suffered with horrendous mental health that contributed to his taking his own life at 29.)

It’s so difficult to “know” with psychiatric drugs, especially for the majority of neurodivergent patients who are anxiety prone. Caution is very wise, but fingers crossed. xx

I did a “place names” module studying linguistics at University. Etymologically “Tre” means a farmstead settlement and is usually followed by the original owner’s / leader’s name. It always makes me chuckle driving in Cornwall seeing so many acknowledging they’re squatting on eg the badgers’ land.

Otherwise some simple swaps when you’re shopping: - higher protein granola for regular cereal, with Greek yoghurt or higher protein milk - eggs with legumes instead of toast (those pouches of french/tomatoey lentils are really useful) - add a sprinkle nuts and seeds to pretty much everything

*If you need fruit in a smoothie, frozen blueberries are a good option (obv as few as you can get away with to hit the spot). (I batch freeze dry ingredients + fruit / avocado to save morning sanity and if I’m really organised I label it with what I’ll need to add 🤣)

Basic smoothie (low vit c as it interferes with Elvanse absorption*, high protein) - scoop protein powder of choice - 1 banana or 4 dates - 1 tbsp oat bran or rolled oats - dollop nut butter or 1/4 avocado - (handful spinach or 1/2 tsp spirulina) - 250ml milk of choice - 2 tbsp Greek yoghurt

Vegetarian is much easier than vegan. Keeping it simple, eggs, greek yoghurt and (inevitably) protein powder are your friends. Are you a sweet or savoury breakfast person?

Apologies if I’m preaching to the choir and/or stating the bleeding obvious (and I appreciate it’s simplistic) but I found hitting the protein for breakfast like a body builder before or as soon as I can after taking Elvanse really helped with side effects (and the mood drop in the evening).

Don’t despair yet. Swapping drugs and going from a higher dose of one to a (really) low dose of another during titration doesn’t make things straightforward.

Drilling is inevitable at this point, but it’s a short term fix. If we want growth, we need the government to invest in green energy infrastructure (like it had to for telecoms, gas, electricity, sewerage and water).

The overwhelming majority of people switching to Reform either used to be Tories or non-voters. Hardly any directly from Labour.

Apparently not as much as you’d have thought. I think this is the huge underlying error in Labour’s strategy. www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/blogs/pseph_...

*John Burn-Murdoch did some great analysis in the FT in 2022 comparing the NHS with peer counties’ healthcare systems, showing how longterm lack of capital expenditure on infrastructure (particularly integrated IT systems) is a really significant factor in the problems being faced by the NHS now.

mrswh.bsky.social @mrswh.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
Ratification of medical records and NHS IT is vital to reduce the admin burden of the whole system and increase efficiency. But it will cost a fortune and capital expenditure is a problem*. Gifting our data to Palantir is not the answer.

Vehement opposition to Reform needs to come from more than just the left-wing. The Centre have always swung the British vote and they’re the ones who need informing. Fortunately Orr is dogmatic (whereas Farage is totally pragmatic) so exposing his true colours and flawed reasoning should be easier.

mrswh.bsky.social @mrswh.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
I’ve long despaired of the BBCs apparent policy of performing balance by producing opposing extremist talking heads. (Farage became a “public figure” largely based on this type of coverage.) I don’t think they need an overt leftist, it’s more important they’re really well informed and clever.

I would be interested to see this broken by income bracket and also geographic region. Even taking account of the fallibility of inflation indices, this is a very blunt analysis.

He only stopped selling his swastika t-shirts last year because they violated his e-commerce provider’s terms of service so THEY took his sales platform offline. He started selling them about a year after issuing an apology for previous antisemitic remarks and committing to “greater sensitivity”.
