A profound and moving poem by one who lived the experience. Wisława Szymborska was a gifted poet and a Nobel Prize laureate.

“ … he should have sent and enquired again whether the god meant his own power or Cyrus’s … he should acknowledge that he was the cause of his own downfall. This was the answer of the priestess.” — Herodotus 1.91.1, 3–4, 6 3/3

“‘Croesus, king of Lydia and other nations, … asks you whether he should send an army against the Persians, and whether he should take allies … The judgement given to Croesus proclaimed that, if he sent an army against the Persians he would destroy a great empire” — Herodotus 1.53.2–54.1–2

As a King-pretender muses destroying Persia, “Artemis” (twin sister of Apollo) soars in the heavens. The Oracle at Delphi warned the wealthy King Croesus, “if he sent an army against the Persians he would destroy a great empire” 1/3

I knew the bartender in the video, Stephanie, very well. She was a friend and mentor — and she was quite amused about being asked to be in the video. May she rest in peace.

W H Auden (1939) responding to the rise of fascism The final couplet is brutal and brilliant The juxtaposition of laughing & crying, his tears are not empathy but triggers of violence Not naming the tyrants make this feel less like history, more like prophecy #poetry #poemoftheday #AntiFascist

I see your point. (The era evoked seemed to me more late 50s/60s Swedish cinema. The kind so humorously parodied these days.)

Appreciating the art of the film (thanks for sharing) but not the poetry in it (which seems a self-indulgent projection of adult angst on children.) something rather dated-feeling about it — that I see as a caricature of a genre of monologue from Northern Europe and Scandinavia of a bygone era.

Most People Don’t Have a ‘Type’
Many daters have a list of traits they’re looking for in a partner—but can be perfectly happy with someone who has few of them.

Life imitates romance plots: “… what people say they want in a partner rarely predicts whom they actually fall for ... Chemistry, timing, shared experiences, and the slow work of falling in love … matter far more than the traits that some people screen for on a dating-app profile.” #BookSky

"When I pronounce the word Future, the first syllable already belongs to the past. When I pronounce the word Silence, I break it. When I pronounce the word Nothing, I make something that doesn't fit in any nothingness" — Wisława Szymborska The Three Oddest Words (My translation from the Polish.)
