I'm trying, yall!!!!!! 😭 What it says: I think I'll try keeping a diary. I can read all of these quite well, but writing is difficult. I have to look everything up. How does everyone write kanji so small? The kanji for "write" is a special kind of torture.

My online store is now open on my site! I'm going to add some more things, but so far there are listed two handmade kimono kuffiyehs, postcards, handmade tiny watercolor books, and handmade pouches. (One of the kuffiyehs already sold, but will make more!) kirakirataalaq.stores.jp

My little guy here is dying of heart failure. He's comfortable on the meds, but it's what will do him in. Selfishly on my part, he feels like the last connection I have to NYC, so it feels like another big shift in my life, besides the shittiness of losing a little friend I've known for 16 years.

I have been really depressed lately, honestly, because my heart keeps breaking and I have a simple mind. I just want unity and it seems like an impossible ask sometimes. I don't know where I would be without art. It has been my constant.

I am so goddamned tired of pseudointellectuals talking ad nauseum about my genetic history that they clearly know nothing about (semitic peoples, anyone???? We're the same fuckin' people???) Also, hey hi, we're still here, don't talk to us like we're a sociology experiment

A lot of notable deaths this week, and now we have lot of social media reminders that they weren't perfect people. Yes, Yayoi Kusama has sais racist diatribes. Yes, Dolly Parton has never supported Palestinians/was heavily into supporting US troops. And they're things that should be talked about.

This is literally on my table right now as I see more and more crap about AI "creation." I AM TEACHING MYSELF HOW TO SEW. I AM CREATING A TEXTILE-BASED BODY OF WORK. Is any of this perfect? NO. THE IMPERFECTIONS ARE WHAT MAKE IT MINE. NO FUCKING COMPUTER CAN REPLICATE THIS.

Anyway, this is my art-signing hanko. It says 丸/Maru, which means circle or round. I've adopted it as my nickname here because it's the same first syllables as my Japanized name (マルガリート/Marugari-to) and I like being round, frankly. 私の名前はマルガリートだけど、丸は全然大丈夫です。

There's a Google Maps phenomenon here where people will just take pics of the front of a place, which is useful in theory, but the pics almost always look like a crime scene photo.

I am really starting to think there is some massive campaign on the English-speaking internet to spread the stupidest rumors about Japan. It seems like a lot of them want to keep "othering" Japan. I have theories.

Today's the last day of Gion Matsuri, so I had one more crack at painting more yamaboko. Three of them are fune, shaped like ships. I painted the second and third on the right when they had just completed reassembling the hoko and they did a "test run" up and down the street.

This is a serious news report, but they sometimes make these doofy 3D model reenactments and they kill me every time.

Story about a threatening convenience store encounter. The visual is a reenactment of this in 3D models that look like they're from 1999.

I just read a goofy N3 Japanese article about amusement parks. My first time trying to read an N3, which is intermediate. Definitely understood the gist. Pretty proud of it, considering I've been self-studying for uhhh... 1.5 years? It ain't an easy language 😅

I realized that a reason why I've started really making handmade/tactile stuff again is because I was doing all my art on a computer for a while, and with all the ire I feel about AI, it's a way for me to make art completely out of that biosphere.
