Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Remember: if you're using AI/LLMs to help with software development, you need to take the cons along with the pros #FFSClaude 030
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I'm not sure if they're using AI to generate new content based on their old videos, or if they're starting to adopt speech patterns that reflect that they've been listening to too much AI-generated "spoken" content with all its weird, unnatural pauses, emphasis, and cadence. 🤔 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 12/08/2026I'm starting to see YouTubers (who have been around a long time and so definitely didn't start as AI) but are beginning to sound like it. 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Will there be a point when the weather forecast stops describing the warmest temperatures as "the best"? 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 30/07/2026Today I went past Venn House. Do you think their garden overlaps with their neighbour's garden? 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 06/07/2026How long before describing a new technological/software product as "modern" becomes widely understood to mean "vibe coded"? 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 01/05/2026I hardly ever check my blog stats any more. Looks like I missed crossing a milestone at the start of last month 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 14/04/2026Eek. Using Claude to help me understand the options when building a custom pc. It feels both helpful and risky. How much do I trust that it's correct??? 200
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 13/04/2026I need a new windows dev box. Any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations? 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 03/12/2025Why does clicking the "Join" button for a meeting still require clicking several more buttons before actually being able to join 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 03/12/2025At some point early this morning I passed 3.5 million views on my blog. Not bad as I only write it for me. Surprisingly, views have gone up in recent months, which counters the expectation that AI answers are replacing all web search traffic 020
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 22/10/2025is CoPilot messing with me? Is alphabetical order harder than maths and counting letters in a word? #ai 020
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 03/10/2025I'm going to my first Hackathon in a couple of years next week. Today I've watched some project demos from a recent Hackathon. They had 10 mins each and just gave a really bad presentation. I'm looking forward to giving a 90sec summary of what I do next weekend 020
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 19/09/2025Ooh, just found some early POC videos from a project two and a bit years ago. Some of that functionality still isn't in the released product. There's probably a reason I'm not a Product manager/owner...yet! 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 19/09/2025Ever thought about creating a digital twin for your landscape? www.prolandscapermagazine.com/2025/09/18/i...prolandscapermagazine.comInnovation and development at the heart of Landscape Performance Live - Pro Landscaper UKLandscape Performance Live will be returning to FutureScape 2025, having made its successful debut last year. 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 05/09/2025It means the thing I built to make working with PRs easier, faster, and more reliable, doesn't work in some of the places it would be most useful :/ 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 05/09/2025TIL: GitHub lets organizations prevent accounts accessing some data via API that those users can get via the UI. I can see how that might be useful or necessary but it also stops some of my automated tools from working with some repos. 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 02/09/2025I've just been caught out by people who have used both on shared projects where these magic values mean different things on different people's machines. I'm against using either. 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 02/09/2025This, but also for "preview" www.mrlacey.com/2024/02/why-...mrlacey.com 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 27/08/2025I wish there was an easy way to reclaim disk space taken up by old, unneeded NuGet packages. Does anyone have a better solution than deleting them all and redownloading them again when needed? 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 27/08/2025Congrats to all involved. (especially Michael) I never imagined I'd be considered a 4-time hall of famer in anything. 041
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 19/08/2025The next incremental improvement I'd like to see in LLM software creation is models based on quality over quantity. That it generates code that is insecure or inefficient or unnecessarily complex or doesn't test the thing it claims to test hurts everyone, regardless of experience or level of "vibe". 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 09/08/2025In that it appears to use a RichTextBlock to render the response, it's worrying that content here can cause an app to crash. Or is it when trying to generate the content it has an unhandled error? 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 09/08/2025I asked Microsoft Copilot a question in the desktop app but when it tries to display the response it generated it causes the app to crash. Repeatedly. Even in different machines. Fortunately, I can view the response in a browser ok. 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 07/08/2025You started "this is more of a comment than a question" But you actually made an unjustified and unsubstantiated statement of you opinion. 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 06/08/2025Is [new] 'sample code' more for people or for LLMs to use as training data? Does it matter? What differences are useful or needed for these different audiences? #ThinkingOutLoud 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 05/08/2025Grrr. I wanted to try something out. I assumed "even if it doesn't work it'll make a good blog post" I assumed wrong. The blog post would just be complaining about how hard something that should be simple is and how Copilot couldn't help. Not blogging it to avoid upsetting people. :/ 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 30/07/2025based on old blog posts about improving WPF performance, I think they stopped optimizing launch time for a while. When they started again, it was after Win11 was out, and so they didn't include Windows 10-related optimizations. 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 30/07/2025The upcoming lack of updates when it goes out of support is going to be the main reason for me. 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 30/07/2025If I had the time and inclination and I was only building for Windows, I'd explore using WinForms to show a loading screen and acting as a bootstrapper for loading an app built with another framework. (More complex apps with many dependencies would load slower) 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 30/07/2025If you needed another reason to get off Windows 10, how about app launch performance--specifically for apps built with WPF Surprisingly, running on ARM isn't a guaranteed way to ensure that everything is faster. (But, ARM-based devices do have other benefits) 341
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 25/07/2025Dear anyone, have you ever heard the expression "please disconnect your line" in anything other than the start of an MS Teams call? It still sounds weird to me but wondering if it's a cultural thing and a common phrase elsewhere.. 200
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 25/07/2025Not sure if it's due to a presumed knowledge/authority or people too busy or the fields moving too fast to keep up with what others are doing/saying/thinking 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 25/07/2025Feeling a bit big headed but also disappointed. Listening to lots of experienced developers on podcasts talking about AI with a faux-authority based on other experiences but no new ideas, 6-months behind the latest concepts, and some things that have been proven false. 110
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 23/07/2025I've just written some VBA! It's like being back in the 90s 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 23/07/2025I've seen so many Android apps do different things with navigation and app lifecyle, the idea of what apps are _supposed_ to do is now lost on me. Does the "right way" even matter if every app does things differently? Or is this an example of a fundamental being overlooked? 020
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 22/07/2025Are estimates that everyone knows are massively under reality and open secret? 000
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 22/07/2025"the joint managing director [...] said earlier estimates did not account for inflation or risk" And "early estimates never include contingency" So, almost guaranteed to be wildly inaccurate and lowered than necessary If you're going to estimate like that should you be in charge? 100
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I'm currently writing a load of scheduled blog posts, but before I publish them, I don't think enough people have read this post about pizza and developers: www.mrlacey.com/2025/07/why-...mrlacey.comWhy feed pizza to developers at meetups?TLDR: If you've ever eaten free food at a meetup (even though you could have afforded a meal), why not help out those who are not as fortuna... 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 18/07/2025There's a new version of a popular IDE coming soon. In that the version number (increased major version) is showing up in public analytics (usage stats) does that count as a public announcement? 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 18/07/2025If your app allows long text entry, it's a much nicer experience for the person using it if you never forget what's entered without being submitted or cleared. Especially if the app crashes. Or if the user has to switch away 010
Matt Lacey @mrlacey.bsky.social · 09/07/2025Pretending to be a "proper writer" and starting another project while on holiday. The first act of a short story was written by the lake today. I now approximate it'll come in at about 15-20k words. Eek. 000
