Yesterday I gave a keynote as part of the 120th anniversary celebration of Sichuan Agricultural University, here in Chengdu. It has already been a great 2 weeks in China, with stops in Beijing and Ningbo before Chengdu.

Kann ich voll nachempfinden. Der 'gefällige' Text macht es auch oft schwerer inhaltliche Fehler aufzuspüren; es ist als würde das Gehirn sich dafür mehr anstrengen müssen, denn es klingt ja alles irgendwie geschliffen und überzeugend. Sehr anstrengend.

Thus, soil health indicators should be complemented by persistence metrics to avoid systematically favoring high-activity but low-stability systems. An interdisciplinary, experiment-driven research effort aimed at soil persistence seems in order. What do you think?

We should reframe soil health more decisively in terms of persistence: a healthy soil is one that will best persist when faced with various external drivers, rather than one that will deliver more agronomically/urban-system relevant functions.

Systematically exploring the perspective of soil persistence in hypothesis-driven experiments in plant–soil ecology will likely uncover new insights into soil ecology, but also into terrestrial ecosystems as a whole.
