Just some guy with a camera. Also, I've got a {Chinese, classical Chinese, Italian, Japanese} dictionary and I'm not afraid to use it.

OPHANIM אוֹפַנִּים (Optical Photon and Antimatter Imager) is a 3800 megapixel camera used in the AEgIS αἰγίς high-energy physics project at CERN. In this blog post The Owlet of Minerva tries to pick apart the scientific, biblical Hebrew, medieval European and Buddhist iconography of the instrument.

I just finished the Duolingo Mandarin to Cantonese course. I am a little annoyed that there wasn’t a nice achievement screen to screenshot and share. Wonder what to do next, Glossika, perhaps? I’m still far from being able to handle native content like movies and podcasts.

Hip hip hurrah! 🎉🥳🥂 May you have many happy years together!
Hip hip hurrah! is an oil-on-canvas painting from 1888 by Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer. It depicts various members of the Skagen Painters standing and sitting around a table in the shadow of tree, toasting in champagne.

Apparently Tom Lehrer survived his obituarist.
The byline for the New York Times obituary for Tom Lehrer says:

"Richard Severo, a New York Times reporter from 1968 to 2006, died in 2023. Alex Traub contributed reporting."

I wasted soo much time on this. I never really got the hang of it since I had…lost the instructions.

Somehow there wasn't room in my life for a @lrb.co.uk subscription, a full-time job and a full-time family. Still thinking perhaps I should have cancelled the family instead...

Age yourself with your first computer. I still have it in storage somewhere, including CRT monitor, tape deck, original packaging and manuals.

Yikes.
A search result for Saul Alinsky's 'Rules for Radicals' from Amazon's Kindle store. The first result is Alinsky but the following are: "Rules for Radicals Defeated: A Practical Guide for Defeating Obama", "Rules for ANTI-Radicals: A Practical Handbook for Defeating Leftism" and "New Rules for Radicals: TNT for Faith-Based Leaders".

The list just goes on and on with conservative takes on "Rules for Radicals".

My first little Book of Songs: “*[k]ˤro[n] *[k]ˤro[n] goes the birdie”
A cartoon image of a bird of prey with a speech bubble that says contains the Baxter-Sagart Old Chinese transliteration of the Chinese character 關 guan, the first word in the Book of Songs, supposedly onomatopoeia for the call of an osprey.

What? I just cancelled my Washington Post subscription but didn't get a chance to tell them why. Ah, well, I suppose they'll figure it out. 🙉

Sorry to raise this thread from the dead but I KNEW I had seen that guy before (and not in the TMNT).

The YouTube subtitles of The Long Season referred to the main character as “vigilante” which struck me as not very appropriate in the context. (I don’t recall the Chinese term used though). Perhaps people are using cc-cedict and just lazily picking the first meaning listed.
