My first lifestyle event made a deer-in-headlights look more prepared than me. I did my best to not let my nervousness stop me from carrying myself authentically. Nerves can always get you, but panic can undo your ability to be yourself or show your skills.

Panic would have ruined us. We’d have lost time bringing on a new person, and momentum, thanks to having to change the whole performance, let alone reset the positive relationships between our performers and instructor. All that work, powder in the wind if panic caught us out.

We got new “in-theme” moves for the show within a week, to the same standard we trusted, because we slowed down. We managed the urge to panic and came out better for it when the next dance numbers came out clean.

I asked them to slow down, remember the quality of the choreographer’s previous work, and consider the chance that there was a misunderstanding about the theme our performance was working in. Once we got the staff historian involved, we put together a list and talked shop.

A client of mine was stressed about a misunderstanding with their choreographer. The style of dance they’d suggested wasn’t working with the theme of a performance we were gearing up for. The client I was advising thought they’d need to fire them.
