Pondering the future of the Internet.
“Kombucha Girl” meme: on the left, a picture of a woman making a face as if she's tasted something sour: “SSO TAX”; on the right, a picture of the same woman thoughtfully considering: “IPv4 TAX”.

It was all fun and games when there were a million and one big corpo streaming services that I wasn't interested in, but I'm sweating now that indie comics have gotten in on the action. I like the look of Third Best TV and Grouse House, but add those to my existing Dropout subscription, and […]

Everyone (outside of Fedi) talking about foldable iPhones, but I'm most curious about “Reference Image”, Apple's newly-announced system for attesting the authenticity of photos. I assume that they've worked with Sony to place unique, per-device key material into each sensor, or else it would be […]

I spent most of my evening fighting Gradle. Every time I do this, I am reminded that I don't particularly like Gradle. The documentation seems to have been written as if it would've killed someone to include two or three more examples. But it seems like, as part of supporting both Groovy and the […]

The one slightly-widely-used FOSS project I sorta-kinda have maintainership of finally got its first unequivocally AI-authored PR. It also hasn't seen any other changes merge in 2.5 years, so I guess I'd better blow the dust off my Java and finally do some work on it this long weekend to justify […]

eBay have decided that their international shipping program won't deliver me two of those cheap 2.88 MB Mitsubishi floppy drives after all. Gutted, particularly because the “Item liquidated” status makes me think the seller isn't getting them back, either.

I am very upset that the Silverstone FLP02 case doesn't have any 3 ¹∕₂″ drive bays. “FLoPpy” is even in the name!
A fetching beige box computer case. It has almost all of the affordances one would expect of a case from 1993: 2×7-segment LEDs for displaying clock frequency, a barrel lock, a vertical grille, three 5 ¹∕₄″ drive bays with weird blanking plates that look like fake floppy drives, but... no 3 ¹∕₂″ bays!

Is there any Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone adapter on the market that's half-way reliable? For the last several years, since moving to an iPhone without a 3.5 mm headphone jack, I've worn out an adapter every 6-8 months. I'm in need of another one now, but it seems like Apple have discontinued […]

My older SSD (a 2 TB Intel 660p) just fell offline (temporarily, thankfully). The /dev/nvme* entries still existed, but `fsck` couldn't read the filesystem's superblock, and `gdisk -l` reported an I/O error trying to list the partitions. Didn't think to check what `dmesg` said about the drive's […]

When I was but a wee lad, the amount of VRAM a GPU had was a pretty good heuristic for how good it was. Then for a few years pretty much everything from low-midrange+ had practically the same amount. And now we've come full circle back to “good GPU, much VRAM” again, haven't we? I mean, I […]

Al Overview

Hello! I am SCP-426, a seemingly ordinary 1750W retro-style toaster. But I come with a unique twist: anyone who talks, writes, or thinks about me is involuntarily forced to refer to me in the first person.
