AUKUS was sold as a way to strengthen Australia’s defence. Its deeper purpose is to bind Australia into US military strategy against China and make American security dependent on Australian participation, Mike Gilligan writes. #auspol #AUKUS #Defence

Having met Shoebridge, I think Albanese should be worried. Shoebridge is tough, smart and instinctive. a killer combo in politics. Australia needs a real opposition given hollowman Albanese's effective coaltion with the right. I'm not sure how the ALP rusted-ons live with themselves.

Quite right. No chance of Albo giving into 'fringes' and 'entitled demands'. Tough man. Principled. Governing for the little people.

Netanyahu denies receiving warnings before Hamas’s 7 October attack. But reports now point to alerts from both the UAE and Egypt, while a source says he privately sought a denial from the Emirati president, Jack Khoury and The Associated Press report. #Israel #October7

The age of 'independent' central banks is past its use-by date. See this i/v with Leah Downey, a political theorist from Kings College. She argues that insulating monetary policy from democratic accountability concentrates unchecked power in unelected technocrats. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqRu...

Australia's trend unemployment rate has risen from 4% to 4.6% in two years and is still rising, yet the RBA is persisting in raising cash rates because of a global oil shock. It is ideological madness and it must be close to pitchfork time.

The RBA raising interest rates for the 4th time this year due to rising oil prices arising from a foreign war. Those prices are a tax on consumers and hit young workers the hardest. Cashed-up and debt-free boomers like me benefit from higher rates. Criminal madness by the RBA.

What is it with the gerontocracy in the USA? People just hanging on forever in Congress and the Supreme Court well into their dotage, blocking younger people with new ideas and when they should be out in the garden with their grandkids enjoying retirement.

They should borrow Gina’s bulldozer & just flatten the corrupt lobbyists. Force them to visit the homes of the people whose sons and daughters have suicided due to gambling harm. Both parties, but particularly the ALP, have enabled this evil industry, which now is as pernicious as the US gun lobby.

A new book focusing on media coverage of Gaza - like the recent ABC 7.30 report interview with a flotilla victim - shows how judgements regularly made in other contexts become controversial only when applied to the state of Israel.

And it's not just News Corp. The real estate industry spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars on media advertising last year. Media owners, like the banks, depend on endless property speculation. It's why these people sell the vested interest as the public interest.

As News Corp attacks sensible tax reform via its news pages, recall that by far its most profitable investment in Australia is its majority stake in the digital real estate giant REA Group, which has a market value of $22bn and an EBITDA margin of 62%. Of course they hate attacks on property spivs!

Amid the media's hysterical pearl clutching over the Budget, ask yourself: If by some miracle the Libs regained power, would they restore the Howard era CGT discount and NG regime? The answer is NO. Both fiscal reality & demographics are against them. It's all noise and confected outrage, folks.

The electorate is much more sophisticated than the media give them credit for. They know promises are contingent. They know that circumstances change. They know that Australia is a cork in a heaving ocean and that the notion that politicians in Canberra can ever deliver absolute certainty is a myth.

Mr Denmore @mrdenmore.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
‘But you said we’d stop for an ice cream.’ The press gallery’s infantile squawking about ‘broken promises’ ignores that the silly ‘rule in-rule out’ games in election campaigns are for the media’s own benefit. The rest of us in the real world simply don’t care. It’s good policy we care about.
