That inner critic when you’re actively writing is a tough one to ignore. 😭

Book two is harder to write than book one; cause at least with book one you had 0 word count and a dream. Book two you have a previously completed and refined first draft you’re constantly comparing your messy first draft to.

What I love about the Blood Debts series is that even tho it deals with racism and systemic oppression, and even tho there are white villains, the main heroes and villains are from OUR community. This is very much a story about Black people’s business.

I’m reminded of the people I grew up around that believed 100% of Indigenous folks were eradicated during American colonization. Many probably still believe that to this day. If you’re not making it “cool” rn to learn & read, the kids won’t do it. And this will be what becomes of true history.

Have people discussed how rage baity Threads is as an app? Every time I click onto it, there’s someone new folks are mad at, something to cry about, or another current event for my growing list titled “Things That Trigger My Anxiety.” I dunno if it’s the same or worse than Twitter.

Let’s be clear: Black queer history IS Black History! Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed. George M. Johnson said, “We are too disconnected from our roots” and they're right. Flamboyants is a great start toward correcting that. (1/3) 💙📚🏳️‍🌈🚀
A book review graphic for Flamboyants by George M. Johnson made by @dbg.was.here on Instagram. This is a young adult nonfiction of illustrated biographies, 144 pages long and 2 hours in audiobook format. The featured quote is “The reality, however, is that queerness is as old as heterosexuality.” The summary reads: "Trans and queer people didn’t appear out of nowhere in the last 30 years. We’ve always been here. Just take a look at the Black revolutionaries of the Harlem Renaissance for proof. In Flamboyants, we celebrate fourteen Black LGBTQ+ icons and artists who lived boldly so generations after them could thrive. As Johnson expresses, “how do you know where you are going if you don’t even know where your people have been?” My verdict: Get in loser, we’re inspired! Encouraging, informative, candid.A book review graphic for Flamboyants by George M. Johnson made by @dbg.was.here on Instagram. The slide details a bulleted list of “what I learned,” which reads: “The Harlem Renaissance, when Black artists took risks following WWI, was one of the queerest periods in world history. Learning about Alain Locke and Richard Bruce Nugent, two gay Black writers who should be revered as legendary voices. Ballroom has been around since the 1800s! Langston Hughes wrote about a ball with cross-dressing attendees.” At the bottom, it reads: Did you have a different takeaway? What were your favorite parts? I’d love to know what you think. The slide details a bulleted list of “what you’ll love,” which reads: “Essays that prove Black queer people have been at the forefront of culture and creativity since the beginning. Celebrating legendary Black leaders who were mistreated or forced to hide in their time. Meeting Zora Neale Hurston, a Black writer who has had a recent resurgence among Black visionaries after being nearly erased from history.” At the bottom, it reads: you check this out? Most Black folks knew this nonsense was coming. It's wrong, but we've always had to hustle, so I feel like collectively we'll be all right. But I also can't help thinking that a whole lot of white people, deprived of the "DEI" excuse, are about to get a wake-up call about their own mediocrity.

If there’s a YA adaptation on the horizon, one thing you can guarantee is Amandla Stenberg gone sneak her way in there somehow.

Turned 25 today. If I look back on this year it’s been pretty productive, got signed with my literary agent, went to Japan, was in a play, now working on book two. Here’s hoping next year brings a ton of success.

I enjoy the revision process so much more than the initial drafting phase. Like, if I could snap my original idea into existence then spend the rest of the time on execution, and world building, i’d be happy. Am I weird?

Deeply honored to see To a Darker Shore on this list alongside so many books I absolutely loved this year❤️‍🔥
To a Darker Shore by Leanne Schwartz
YA speculative fiction with protagonists who are fat or autistic are few and far between, but this book delivers a character who is both while also having a fantastic storyline. Her whole life, Alesta has been told she’s worthless. When she makes a big mistake, her best friend Kyrian takes the fall and ends up being sacrificed to a monster. Alesta descends into the abyss to save him, only to find him transformed into something monstrous. Loosely inspired by Dante’s Inferno.

book cover: A book cover for TO A DARKER SHORE featuring a fat girl in a bodice and skirt running and carrying a crossbow, a wry, determined smile on her white face looking over a shoulder, dark hair flying behind her. She’s above the pit of hell and surrounded by levels of hell, with fire, devils, mirrors, and towers rising up to mountains and a sun in the sky, watched over by a large face of a golden god. The image is set between two golden columns. A sad monster boy watches the girl from behind a broken mirror, bloody hand pressed to the glass. Colors are red, gold, and purple. Author’s name at the bottom: Leanne Schwartz

How closely do you guys follow your outlines? Do you ever deviate? I find that I often follow my outlines quite closely until I hit the middle/act 2 and then there’s some major adaptations differences that start seeping in that results in me course correcting.
