warning to anyone who uses the @blueark.app import from X to blueksy — takes way longer than stated and appears in feed as if uploads from years ago are happening at the moment of upload 🤦🏻‍♂️ maybe i should have just started fresh…

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 25/11/2024

heads up, over the next few days @blueark.app is uploading my tweet history from x to here. apparently the ux isn’t making it look like it’s archived. sorry in advance! should be done in a day

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 25/11/2024

just deleted #facebook, #tiktok, and #x/#twittter and have never felt better. glad i have bluesky left to shout this from the rooftops.

so what kind of social space do we want here? do we want old twitter again, with clout and profit to the loudest and most followed? do we want to repeat glorifying inflammatory takes that divide? what else could this be?

testing the sky follower bridge chrome plugin (ty @lilchen.bsky.social!) to port over my fam. though, honestly, starting small here sounds kinda nice, too.

i just created internal emotes at work for :verydemure: and :notdemure: and feel so proud but fear no one will get it or understand

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 17/08/2024

i've really been leaning into ai tools to analyze my own writing-in-progress and tell me how to reconsider my overall writing strategy. like, 'say back to me what i'm saying here as an outline' – really helpful and cool

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 12/08/2024

someone, presumably a sociologist, just walked by my seat on the plane while boarding and said: “matt right? Digital Divisions is SO GOOD!” i swear that felt better than any panel presentation 😂😂🥰

hey #asa2024 fam! giving a talk today on my YouTube work at 2pm. really fun spread of topics. come on by if you’re curious about cultural production and audiences! 🎥✨

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 10/08/2024

what a great day at #asa2024. i love sociology and i love sociologists!

hey #asa2024, if you’re looking for a quick and delicious lunch there’s an awesome little strip of chinese food shops and other small businesses seconds from the convention center — so so good

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 29/07/2024

hit 1000 citations today! i know these numbers are silly, but it does still feel cool that my work resonates with folks out there – especially as someone working outside of academia ❤️

trying to find the fire to write again after quite a long hiatus. i remember how this place used to feel like a place i could share articles as i read with reactions; find and benefit from nerdy discussions; and amplify others' work.

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 15/07/2024

do people still use this thing?

on the one hand, i’m grateful when studies of schools and inequality bring cultural sociological thinking into their work. on the other, so often do people throw in so many cultural definitions (or don’t even define it) and theories that it feels like soup. and not good soup.

hey, sociologists! you may be scrambling – as i have been – to finish up your submissions for #asa2024 in beautiful montreal (can't wait to have those bagels, again). consider submitting your papers to C&C's panel "Racial and Ethnic Boundaries and Consumption." <3

question for my faculty friends: as you level up in academia, do you find *more* or *less* time for writing? trying to see how similar or not it is to industry life...

000

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 13/09/2023

also i generally embrace the beauty of people reading your work and interpreting it in new ways but for the record i did not create, nor do i endorse, the term “digital cultural capital” 😂 we’ve got enough forms of capital out there in the world already

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 04/09/2023

i love how becker (2000) talks about audience awareness of an improvised set, in the sense that some audiences knows when the risks in that musical moment are high or instead familiar territory - almost like synchronization

000

matt rafalow @mrafalow.bsky.social · 04/09/2023

the more i read becker, the more mesmerized by his writing i become
