Thunder shower here in the Burg. When we were kids we would lay along curb in Grant St. and let the water rush over us on the way to the storm drains. Not the sharpest crayons in the box but it sure felt good.

The Cuban women’s national volleyball team was denied entry into Puerto Rico for a tournament because of “visa requirements.” Can you imagine what the upcoming Olympics and soccer World Cup are gonna look like? I think the world should boycott the United States and ban us from foreign competition.

Looked up the G Street playground on google earth. When we were kids(late 50’s early 60’s) it was a big dirt lot with a dangerous merry-go-round, small and large swings with chains with wooden seats, a 10-12 foot tall metal slide(hot as hell) and a tiny craft shed where you could braid gimp lanyards

We had anew kid on the block. His name was Reinhardt. We called him Reinie the Heinie. He thought it was funny. Mind you, WWII had only been over for about 15 years. His dad was a consular officer in Cleveland. His teenage brother, who I believe was named Hans, hated it and us. I get it now.

Went to Larkmore Elementary School. Walked both ways and home and back for lunch! Me and Greg and Mikey used to ride are bikes down Root Rd. to the lake. We weren’t really supposed to go swimming un-attended but, well… We dried our clothes on the handlebars on the way home.

Don’t folks know that if their tips and ot are not taxed, then nothing will be contributed to their own social security benefits? A pittance in their pocket now and a reduced pension later? Not to mention that the lack of their contribution to the system will hasten its collapse.

Used to deliver the Cleveland Plain Dealer in my early teens. Lotsa dailies, but about 400 Sundays. Whew! My grandpa worked 3rd trick at the steel mill in Lorain, my uncle in the shipyards past the Coast Guard station. Where did my Ohio go? My favorite columnist, Connie Schultz? Sherron Brown?

With all that’s going on in the country, my mind is drifting to a simpler time. Either that or I’m just old. Spent most of my childhood on Grant St. in Lorain, Ohio. ( a state I don’t recognize anymore ) It was great growing up. I had the Doyles and the Jenkins and the Robinsons. More to follow.
