3) Teens were less likely to report negative effects of cell phone restrictions at the end of the year than the beginning. In particular, while almost half of teens said restrictions negatively affected their happiness in the fall, by the spring this was down to about a quarter.

2) BUT, the increase in use was less in schools that had a bell-to-bell ban, suggesting that these policies are working to reduce cell phone use, even when not fully enforced. Use went from 25% to 35% of students in schools with bell-to-bell bans. In schools without bans, use went from 32% to 50%.
Cell phone usage increased more in schools without a bell-to-bell ban.

Three quick findings: California districts and California teachers don’t get much guidance about curriculum adoption or implementation. There is substantial room for both state and district leaders to exercise more authority over curriculum.
Graph showing that many California teachers--often more than national averages--report using "curriculum materials I create myself" at least weekly.

Third, student engagement, grades, and mental health are strongly related to the amount of absences they have. For instance, kids flagged on a mental health screener report missing 50-100% more days than those not flagged.
Teens flagged on a mental health screener miss much more school than those not flagged.

Second, though there are some less common reasons for missing school, among children who miss at all for those reasons, they often miss many days. Teens who have to care for siblings for instance, or who are suspended, miss lots of days for those reasons.
Among teens missing school for rarer reasons, they often miss school for many days.

Now the findings. First, virtually everyone misses some school for illness, but teens miss school for lots of different reasons, and simple excused/unexcused binaries miss a lot of important detail.
