That diagram alone is not enough to tell whether it's a plane wave or not. It is if the wave shown here has "surfaces of constant phase" that are parallel planes. If not, then not.

Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 7m
No, that is something LIGO/Virgo can exclude. I linked to the relevant article earlier. With 2x LIGO and Virgo together, both the detector signal and the timing, there is enough information to show that what is happening is not stretching/squeezing parallel to the direction of travel.

Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 13m
Yes. And at each point of the wave, you could identify the current phase of the stretching-and-squeezing cycle. Join up the adjacent points in space corresponding to one specific phase value, and you get: a plane. That is what makes it a plane wave.

"plane" and "quadrupole radiation pattern" is a contradiction in term. You can only have one or the other. (What you can and will have is an overall quadrupole radiation pattern, which in the far field looks locally everywhere like a plane wave.)

Category mistake again. The "plane" is not something that acts. The squeezing and stretching *takes place* in the plane. Which, for a plane gw, also happens to be the wavefront.
200
Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 26m
The "plane" in "plane wave" is the wavefront. That doesn't tell you anything about the wave action yet, just about the phase. So yes, of course there are longitudinal plane waves. There are (locally) plane sound waves in air. That was my counter-argument against your sound analogy!

No. The plane of a plane wave is always a single plane orthogonal to the propagation direction. It's the wave front.
100
Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 30m
No. A single plane gravitational wave would, in each of the parallel planes, be in one particular phase of the quadrupole action. That action always involves both squeezing and stretching (in orthogonal directions within the plane). That is what makes it a quadrupole! Never one without the other.
100
Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 32m
Yes. In each plane you would have some definite phase of the gw, one particular wave of the quadrupole distortion. You linked to my visualization www.einstein-online.info/en/spotlight... earlier - that is exactly what it shows in the 3D version: Particle circles in parallel planes being deformed.

Yes, scalar longitudinal waves with a quadrupole intensity pattern are in the far field locally plane waves. That was literally my argument: If the only "quadrupole property" of your system is a quadrupole intensity pattern, it doesn't help you with local quadrupole action.
100
Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 43m
No, why should it be? It's locally a plane wave. There is literally a plane transversal to the direction of propagation, and it's in this plane (and its parallel copies) that the (quadrupole) action happens.

"scalar longitudinal waves with quadrupole radiation" sounds like an oxymoron to me. Can you rephrase? What does the "quadrupole" refer to here?

It's a matter of which are the basic wave properties in each case. For GW it's naturally a local transverse quadrupole action. For sound in air it's a local longitudinal pressure wave. Once are far from the source, you get locally plane waves (by geometry), in both cases.
200
Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 1h
Near field is not locally plane because what is meant by "local" (that is, what is covered by the detector) is too large. It's just a matter of geometry. Whether for electromagnetism or gravitational waves or sound.
100
Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 1h
And yes, LIGO/Virgo detects locally plane transverse action on their detectors. (I linked to the paper on this in an earlier post.) That's what the detector characteristic, the three signals (one in each detector) and the timing information tell us, jointly. 2/2

Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 1h
What happens in the near field is more complicated, and I would expect it to not be locally plane for typical detector sizes. It definitely is not in the examples where you place the detector components (pendulum) in a way to probe the quadrupole intensity structure of the wine glass sound wave. 1/

holes. Either system is tiny, seen from far away. And if the only transmission you have are longitudinal sound waves (as for the wine glass, in your analogy) then the result are locally plane longitudinal waves. Which contradict what LIGO/Virgo are measuring. 2/2

Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 1h
It is simple, but not in the way you claim. The "it's locally plane longitudinal waves" for sound waves is not a matter of efficiency, it's a matter of geometry. It happens whenever the angular diameter of the source is small as seen from the detector. Whether for a wine glass or merging black 1/

Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 1h
Yes! But gravitational wave measurements by LIGO/Virgo require transversal quadrupole action over great distances (amplitude dropping as 1/distance). The wineglass cannot deliver that, not even as an analogy. Or put differently: the analogy doesn't work.

Markus Pössel @mpoessel.de · 2h
If you go into the far field, then in any local region it's going to be locally a plane wave, and longitudinal. What else?

support your analogy. It contradicts your analogy. The sensible thing would be to drop the analogy and move on. Why insist on something that is so blatantly contradicted by the data? That's not physics any more. It's some weird kind of secular religion. 3/3

Now we're going back to questions that I thought we had resolved. Which is rather discouraging. I'm not willing to go through the same arguments again and again - that's not a good use of anyone's time. In the far field, a real wine glass as a sound wave source produces waves that are, to really 1/

For our on @mpi-astro.bsky.social press releases, we have the same policy: the earliest we make a press release is when the article has been accepted after peer review. It's not perfect, but introduces at least one element of quality control for news stories.

This may vary from country to country, but in Germany at least, there seems to be a consensus among science journalists that they wait for the peer-reviewed version for their reporting. Non-peer-reviewed only if it's really important to get out quick (new Covid study during pandemic etc.)
