Nearly all of those arrested by Bukele’s government have not been convicted of anything, but instead held in indefinite pretrial detention. Now their only day in court will be mass trials. The State of Exception is not an anti-gang measure, it is an anti-due process measure.

Mass Trials Put Hundreds in One Dock in El Salvador
Lawyers warn that the mass trials of people imprisoned during President Nayib Bukele’s gang crackdown are marred by vague evidence and restrictions on a proper defense.

China is already the top trade partner for most of S. America. But polls show, despite our imperialist legacy, most people throughout Latin America feel closer to the US than to China, and don't like how China does business. It's a tremendous own goal by Trump to get to this point.

As Brazil votes in the first round election today, it's striking how no amount of scandal or controversy - not the sports betting ban, Moraes probe, or Santini sex parties - is changing voters' minds, if the polls are accurate. The October surprise is that no one is surprised.

In 2016, an evangelical conservative friend said about Trump, "He's not one of us but he'll get things done for us." One can interpret this as proof that right wing voters are hypocrites, or that they are better at thinking of politicians instrumentally as means to an end.

For the Trump administration, it is preferable to be partnered with a nominally left wing government that’s a dictatorship than a likely right wing government that’s a democracy, because the latter would be accountable to its citizens and the former is accountable only to Trump.

I and many people I know have had loved ones taken in by elder scammers. That a major party has consultants who fundraise using these same tactics, then those consultants kill investigations into them, should be a bigger scandal.
