#Verity begins intriguingly with all the makings of a sloppy, yet entertaining thriller. However, it lacks thrills as its predictable story devolves into a series of questionable reveals that make its shallow characters even less likable. It’s as memorable as a bland beach read.

#Digger is the most interesting film I’ve seen all year. Through heavy-handed, yet purposeful satire and matched by a nuanced Tom Cruise performance, Alejandro G. Iñárritu commands his audience to face uncomfortable truths that will inevitably mean life or death on a global scale.

Anchored by sincere performances from two of the most likable young actors working today, #CharlieHarper’s emotional whirlwind romance is conventional yet heartfelt. The bittersweet narrative’s nonlinear structure keeps it fresh, even at times when it’s most hard to follow.

#Primetime explores what happens when ethics are put in jeopardy for entertainment and good intentions are corruptly exploited until they rot away. It’s another stellar showcase of Robert Pattinson’s talents, but most surprising is the career-best performance from Skyler Gisondo.

Atrocious visual effects aside, #HOPE is at times an exhilarating feat of action filmmaking thanks to breathless chase sequences, inventive cinematography, and production design that rivals some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. I started losing hope when its plot kicked in.

#CoyoteVsAcme is an important case for why movies and the artists that make them matter. On top of that, it just so happens to be a fantastic film with a sharply written story that makes hilarious use of the beloved Looney Tunes characters, especially the titular Wile E. Coyote.

While it sometimes feels like it buckles under the weight of its narrative, #CampMiasma is another transfixing allegorical feat from Jane Schoenbrun. As they contend with the honorable burden of being heralded as the voice of a generation, they further prove they’re exactly that.

In a year full of incredible throwbacks, #TheEndOfOakStreet stands out from the rest. Capitalizing on the terror of what dinosaurs unleashed on a modern populace would really mean, it’s the best cinematic representation of the creatures since the original Jurassic Park.

#Tony is my favorite type of coming-of-age film. Less interested in the icon Anthony Bourdain became, it’s about the journey of self discovery that a lost young man takes as he lets go of who he thinks he is and embraces who he’s meant to be. Dominic Sessa is once again brilliant

Refreshingly street-level, #BrandNewDay preserves high emotional stakes by emphasizing the sacrifice that defines Peter Parker’s choice to be a hero. Filled with surprises, it’s a reminder of how these movies can still mean something when made with passion and care.

#TheOdyssey is Christopher Nolan at his most epic and cinema at its grandest. Nolan weaves this legend in a unique way that only he can, emphasizing the tragedy and heartache of the effect of war on the soul. The journey itself is wobbly, but the destination is extraordinary.

#EvilDeadBurn may not be the scariest entry in the franchise, but it is the most disturbing – sometimes upsettingly so. Although I became desensitized to the gruesome torture of its characters early on, director Sébastien Vaniček’s novel direction kept me thrillingly engaged.

Extensive in its reverence for cinema history, #MinionsAndMonsters will bring a massive smile to the face of anyone who loves movies. As a sendup of old Hollywood and classic works of slapstick humor, the film plays to the strengths of its dim-witted yet lovable characters.

Masterfully executed, #TheInvite is an instant classic featuring four of the best comedic performances in years. While both hilarious and raunchy, the magic comes from its subtlety and introspection as it unwinds the layers behind broken characters who’ve forgotten their passions

Director Julian Schnabel literally wears his influences on his sleeve with the inclusion of Martin Scorsese in one of the most ridiculous casts ever assembled. The self-indulgent nature of #InTheHandOfDante sabotages what could’ve been a great film had its plot been leaner.

#Supergirl lacks energy and personality. I’m a fan of Craig Gillespie, but a decent action director he is not. Every interesting element within it feels borrowed from movies that have done them better. Milly Alcock has potential as Kara, but she’s not given much to work with here

#ToyStory5 retains the magic, once again providing a story packed with the emotion, excitement, and imagination that makes the series special. In tackling the idea of toys v. tech, rather than whether or not to embrace tech, it teaches kids to embrace what makes them who they are.

#ScaryMovie is exactly what I hoped it would be. A somewhat coherent commentary on how the horror genre’s changed in the 13 years since the last film baked within a cavalcade of stupidity and the occasional ingeniously constructed bit. Nothing special, but it’ll make you laugh.

Damian McCarthy’s #Hokum excels most when building atmospheric dread. The hotel in which the film takes place feels like a character and is the creepiest locale I’ve seen in a horror film in years. McCarthy marries exquisite production and sound design in a union of raw terror.

In writer-director Lee Cronin’s latest nasty work, there’s not a shred of fun to be found unless you’re the type of person who gets off on watching other moviegoers squirm. While it succeeds in small doses, some campy fun, as seen in previous iterations, could have suited it well

As disturbing as any of the violence is in #FacesOfDeath, the most unsettling part about the film is its searing commentary on how we’ve become so desensitized to the violent depravity encountered on social media that we enable it as a culture. It’s as smart as it is thrilling.

The lush cinematography and ravishing design among all the crafts in #WutheringHeights makes up for much of what the film lacks in subtlety and complexity. For as subversive as it is, Emerald Fennel’s interpretation of this classic story doesn’t have anything noteworthy to say.

Bart Layton’s sleek approach to #Crime101 elevates it from a standard crime thriller. The film’s key value lies within its commitment to its layered characters. While I would’ve liked to have seen them explored even deeper, the excellent performances help fill in the blanks.

#TheMoment is a scathing satire of the music and concert industry from the perspective of one of pop’s biggest stars. As hilarious as the film is, its strength is the surprising vulnerability displayed in Charli XCX’s performance as she confronts a peak moment in her career.

#GOAT is a textbook underdog tale. While its world can best be described as Zootopia-light, the “Roar Ball” aspect brims with original ideas that the film largely dodges in favor of an unappealing story and characters. Featuring more product placement than heart, this is a miss.
