Zach found this recording recently, and it's a crucial piece of evidence that thoroughly refutes a theory put forward by Alina Chan, DRASTIC, and even, according to what we read in Vanity Fair, the FBI. Check his thread! #covidorigin

pls read my ecomodernist manifesto—we could make a massive dent in our planetary crises by reducing our dependence on the two great efficiency sinks in American life: meat and cars. And we can do so in a way that's consistent with growth and democratic principles www.vox.com/future-perfe...
screenshotted text: We’ll need to build out renewables at breakneck speed and electrify everything we can, of course. But some of the most powerful levers we have to decouple economic growth from environmental impact challenge us to do something even harder — to begin outgrowing two central fixtures of American life that are as taken-for-granted as they are supremely inefficient: our extreme dependence on meat and cars.

Changing those realities is so culturally and politically heretical in America that this case is almost never made in climate politics, but it deserves to be made nonetheless. And doing so will require examining the trade-offs that we too often treat as defaults.

This book is really good. Although it's probably not for people who want a basic overview given how incredibly detailed it is

Everything you actually need to understand about the Consumer Reports protein powder report (threading a gift link!) -- plant-based protein powders are fine, and do not, ffs, allow them to push you to get whey protein
screenshotted text: times lower than minimal known unsafe levels) to arrive at 0.5 micrograms of lead per day as its reference level.

This is an unachievable safety target, significantly below the lead you get from average daily food consumption, especially for people who eat more legumes, fruits, and vegetables, all of which grow in the soil and inherently pull in some amount of heavy metals. As one clinical dietician I spoke with told me of the Prop 65 level: “You literally can’t eat food from the Earth if you want to achieve this.”

Hmm we actually know a lot more about the CIA's illegal MKULTRA program than I realized. I had assumed most of it was just unknown and unknowable because the documents were destroyed but apparently historians can reconstruct what all the subprojects that compromised MKULTRA did.

It's kinda crazy how often translators of ancient texts will not translate the word slave as slave but instead translate these words as "servant". You see this in Homer, New Testament, and Quran translations

Why did ancient people all think the mind was in the heart rather than the brain? The ancient Egyptians, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Quran, and Aristotle all think this. Tbh I don't get it. It seems so intuitive to me that my mind is in my head. Like I can feel it

I love Pliny the Elder. His "Natural History" is interesting and hilarious. Also he had the most gigachad death during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (79 AD, Pompey and all that). I mean ok he was a Roman aristocratic slave owner, meat eater and all that and that's bad but still

It's quite intriguing that the literary insertions that scholars find in the Quran (verses that were likely added to suras at later times) are justified and explained by the Quran itself in an early Meccan sura (Q 75:19)

How did I not know that Hannibal had a Greek historian with him on his campaign? I just learned this a few days ago. Before that I had assumed that there were no written eyewitness accounts out there. Now that source doesn't survive but it seems Polybius used it in his account.

It's actually kinda insane how modern Christians shot themselves in the foot by deciding that the original intentions of the authors of the Bible has to be what is true. Christians used to not care about the original intentions of the authors when they interpreted the Bible.

Tom Holland's worst historical take was the one where he didn't think Muhammad was from Mecca. A non Meccan origins for Muhammad is extremely implausible in my view. He also at one point wasn't sure if the Quran was written by a single author which is also implausible imo.

People need to stop saying archeologists only say an object is a ritual object if they don't know what it is. They say it's a ritual object if they actually think it's a ritual object they would say if they don't know what it is. Ritual objects are very common!

Kinda insane how the Safavid empire was basically just a Sufi order that had become militant, adopted Shia Islam, conquered Iran, turned into an empire, and forcibly converted the population of Iran to Twelver Shia Islam (which is why Iran is majority Shia today)

It's so cool that the Florentine Codex (one of our best primary sources on the Aztecs) has an entry on axolotl. They even drew a picture of one in it. Axolotl are from the lake that Tenochtitlan was built on so the Aztecs knew about axolotl (they were often eaten)

There's no evidence the Pythagoreans never murdered anyone over irrational numbers. This idea is based on some ancient sources which say some people who revealed Pythagorean secrets died in shipwrecks caused by divine wrath (these sources shouldn't be taken on face value anyways)

Ok so it seems that Copernicus independently came up with the Heliocentric model. He was not inspired by Aristarchus. Copernicus only became aware that Aristarchus believed the earth was mobile AFTER he had already come up with his heliocentric model.

I sometimes wonder if we should call most of the conquistadors Castilians instead of Spanish. I suspect most of them would think of themselves as Castilians since the joint monarchy of Aragon and Castile was so new (unless they were from the kingdom of Aragon of course)

The idea that Julius Caesar wrote his Gallic Wars as propaganda to be read back in Rome as the war was going on doesn't seem to be true. We have no evidence of contemporaries reading his books while the war was happening. They seem to have learned about the war via other means.

In Norse mythology Loki is not Thor's brother nor is he Thor's adoptive brother. His father is not Odin but a Jottunn named Farbauti and his mother is an Æsir named Laufrey. However since Æsir are considered to be higher status than Jottunn Loki associates with his mother's clan

Ok tbf we also have a similar argument from Ptolemy however it doesn't involve looking at a ship! He says that if you approach a mountain from the sea you can see it rise above the horizon as you approach it by sea. This isn't the same. Also Ptolemy was writing 400 years after the idea was proposed.

Ok here is what Aristotle actually says (this is from the Oxford translation of his book On the Heavens). Notice how he says nothing about ships sinking over the horizon. Also this is the earliest actual empirical argument for the earth being round that we know of (although the idea predates him)

I think the first guy to make this argument was Copernicus. Or at least he is the reason why this argument is so popular today. He makes it in his famous book De revolutionibus. I don't think we have ancient authors making it (the closest we get is Pliny the Elder but it's not the same)
