Colour photo taken late at night, at floor level, of the corner of a building - white textured stone and terracotta plaster above - in the right half of the frame, and an alleyway disappearing into the distance on the left. There is a tiny chink of light spilling from a first storey window in the alleyway, but it is otherwise in complete darkness; and I n contrast, the corner of the building on the right is in a pool of bright warmth from a streetlight above. Standing on the flagstone pavement just at the corner is a discarded bottle of prosecco, with a single stem red rose, dried and withered, sticking out of the neck, its leaves making a chaotic shadow on the wall behind. When I took the picture yesterday I thought it looked quite sad and forlorn, and like the end of something, but as I'm looking at it again this morning, it's more a picture of resilience and defiance and hope and new beginnings.

Colour photo, at the vaporetto water bus stop. The photo mainly shows the floor - warm grey, industrial, functional, scuffed and mottled by years of wear. Five sets of waiting seated crossed legs along the right hand side of the picture, sandals and loafers and black trousers and jeans, with hands resting on the knees holding mobile phones, lit by a streak of bright sunlight from the open door at the far end. There is another set of seats opposite but almost entirely out of frame, except for a pair of lower legs dressed in chinos the same colour as the floor, and white trainers, in the top left hand corner. There's nothing inherently melancholy in the picture, but it feels bleak to me, lonely and atomised, and like whatever we're waiting for might end up not being worth it. I'm not in a particularly cheerful mood today, as you can probably tell, but if you're reading this I hope your day is full of joy though :)

An external wall in various shades of terracotta coloured brick, bathed in warm sunshine. Sticking out from the centre of the wall, separated by two shuttered windows, are two chimney flues - big vertical rectangles of protruding brick which taper to a trapezium, which gives them the vague shape of puppet heads. Underneath both of them there is a small dark window, which the flues half cover, which look like open guffawing mouths. The flue on the right has tiny square windows towards the top, with a flowerpot perched in each, which in this context look like eyes. In shape and placement and colour-palette and expression, they immediately vividly reminded me of the grumpy old Muppet hecklers Statler and Waldorf, companionably and silently chortling their derision at the state of the world.

Night time colour photo. Two upper storey windows with dark green wooden shutters, in an ivory coloured wall, lit by a bright hot white streetlight attached a wrought iron arm jutting out from the building in the upper left corner of the image. Suspended from the arm just behind the light is what I think is a security camera (boo!), droplet shaped and modern-looking and frankly sinister. The disproportionately enlarged shadow of the camera falls on the wall in such a way that two small black circular vents become the blank eyes of a hovering little ghost (boo!). The ghost actually looks more sweet than sinister though.

Black and white photo. On the right, the roof and edge of a low stone house, which looks old and traditional, with cloud-streaked sky above. The left half of the frame are four flights of a temporary-looking outside staircase, although to the best of my knowledge the staircase has been there for years, attached to a visible sliver of white building, two storeys higher than the building on the right. The staircase has sides made of netting, so the metal stairs, uniform diagonal slashes between platforms, are visible through it. The contrast between the modern, sheer, ethereal pale grey of the left half of the image contrasts strongly with the older, solid, robust, darker grey of the right hand side. Also worth noting that, following the apparent architectural law of "no such thing as a straight line in Venice", nothing in the image reads as quite as geometric as it ought to be, making the whole scene feel slightly drunk.

[Picture of insect with exuberant number of legs, which I'd be grateful if someone could identify] Does anyone know what this lil fella might be? My partner spotted it on the wall of his office (northern Italy)

Photo of a weird pale brown insect, that looks a bit like an earwig, but with a fan-shape of spindly legs on each side that are longer at the front of the body and get progressively shorter towards the back. Very strange looking creature.

The surface of the wall is full of bumps and blisters, and has various bits of wood and metal sticking out, which are presumably what is holding it up, all of which cast little shadows. A line of cable runs along the bottom of the frame, with its disproportionately wide jaggedy shadow underneath. Another cable and its shadow crosses the frame diagonally upwards from left to right. The whole is reminiscent of an aerial view of a distant planet in a sci-fi movie.

An arched corridor, leading to a big open sliding glass double door with navy blue signs giving directions to various hospital wards, and a big arched window above it. Through the door is a temporary-looking covered tunnel curving away to the left in the distance, made of narrow plastic panels on both roof and walls making a rippling effect, and sunlit trees above and around. In the top centre of the image, an ornate black metal and glass lantern hanging from the roof of the internal corridor. Directly below it, in the centre of the arched window, a silhouetted pigeon wanders nonchalantly along the ledge. A sunny concrete wall, stained in patches of light grey and darker grey, which look a bit like clouds. There are five small holes in the wall in the lower right of the frame, arranged like the top of a rectangle shape. The sharply-defined shadow of a leafy plant tumbles in from the left hand side. The shadows of an empty washing line run across the top half of the image - two parallel tracks of two cords terminating in a crossbar, which look to me like train tracks. The picture, despite being almost monochrome, feels warm, and to my slightly apocalyptic mindset this morning, like remnants of a human-constructed world after the humans have disappeared.

Unattributed two panel meme. The top panel is a closeup of a left hand holding a small white rectangular piece of paper, on which is written "I can't do it" across two lines with two words on each. In the style of an insipid pointless patronising motivational poster, there is a pair of scissors with the blades hovering above the apostrophe-t in "can't", as if about to cut that off and leave the message "I can do it" instead, in a ghastly banal power-of-positive-thinking way.
However in the second panel, we see that the scissors have in fact just cut out the little square of white below the word "can't", leaving the original message intact, just on a slightly more interestingly shaped piece of paper.

A big silver metal porter's trolley rests in a Venetian alleyway. The floor is grey flagged stone, and the back wall is graffiti-covered brick interspersed with windows with metal grilles and a green metal door. The trolley is stacked high with boxes and furniture, most notably a wooden chair hooked upside down over the end. It looks faintly absurd, and more like an art installation or a circus set than an actual transport solution, but given that there are no cars here, improbably-stacked trolleys and human physical strength is the way that all last-mile transport happens in this city.

Colour photo looking down towards the far right corner of a dingy dead-end alleyway. The walls are made of chipped and cracked stone and plaster, with a greenish mossy tinge around floor level, and a mixture of greys and brick and sand and ochre higher up. There are three windows in the right had wall, fronted by industrial-looking iron grates, lit from the inside. The window on the end wall looks spookily derelict - also covered by a metal grill, but backed by absolutely filthy bottle-green netting, with rips and gaping holes, showing only blackness beyond, like something out of a horror film. And to compound the horror scenario, there are four black plastic bin bags stacked in the corner directly under the window, three of which contain the disembodied legs of upturned shop mannequins, with their pale calves and feet sticking up out of the top of the badly-tied bags. Deeply surreal and not a little creepy.

Colour photo of the lower half of a votive shrine set into a terracotta-brown plaster wall. The shrine has a white marble surround: the vertical sides look like little columns with square bases, and there is a small protruding shelf running along the bottom and casting a sharp triangular shadow to the left, supported by an ornate scroll like a seashell. There is a big chip missing from the front of the shelf, and a gap in the row of little decorative tooth-like mouldings underneath. The shrine itself is an oval of dark metal recessed quite deep into the wall behind a metal grille, so that you can't make out what is actually on it. A bunch of three very pretty but very faded fake roses have been tied to the front of the grille - I think they were probably once pink, but they have been bleached to a grubby white by the sun - backed by a cluster of dark bottle green leaves. An external plaster wall, painted a vibrant pastel orange colour, with an uneven strip of grey along the bottom of the image where the paint has entirely flaked away. The left half of the picture is taken up by a window, with a strip of white stone top and bottom, and open dark green wooden shutters either side. Perfectly framed on the windowsill stands a white pot filled with flowers of a similar orange shade to the wall. Above the window are two diagonal metal wall brackets, and along the top of the image is a slightly overhanging protrusion, presumably an internal beam, sloping down from left to right, and casting a dark shadow underneath it. The window glass is decorated by metal circles joined by lines, like very sparse chain mail, and from inside you can just make out the warm orange light from a chandelier. The roundness of the window decorations and the roundness of the flowers are in lovely curvy contrast to the geometry of the rest of the image.

Colour photo of the most worn-looking external wooden double door you can possibly imagine. Each side of the door is a solid plank of wood, which might at some point in the distant past have been painted white on top of a rust-red colour, but only a memory of the paint remains as a faint stain on the pockmarked, rough-grained surface. Each side also has a vertical metal handle, rendered verdigris by time and use. There is a narrow metal slot for letters in the top left corner, warped and bent out of shape. The doors were once held shut by a bolt, which has long since disappeared leaving only the rusted metal plate that the bold would have slid into, and holes where the other fixture used to be. It looks more like a stage prop that an enthusiastic designer over-elaborated to the point of parody rather than something which actually exists in the real world.

A slightly drizzly sort of day. A typical Venetian housefront - rectangular dark-shuttered windows with white marble surrounds on two storeys - reflected slightly distorted and upside down in the typically pale-green water of a canal, giving the picture an eerie and slightly otherworldly vibe. The reflection takes up the top three quarters of the image, and the lower quarter is reflected sky, a strip of cooler more bluey-green. The water's surface is speckled with raindrops and their expanding circles. The light from a street lamp is reflected in the very top right hand corner, a fuzzy line of warm yellow. The image is peaceful and quiet, and a bit mournful.

A washing line, strung between two brick houses on opposite sides of a narrow street. A pair of old-fashioned slippers with a fuzzy fur trim has been hung up to dry, with their soles horizontal, so that it looks like someone has just stepped out of them into thin air. They are in shadow, so it is hard to make out any detail on them, and the shape they make together with the upright clothes pegs clipping them to the line makes me think of loaf-bunny shadow puppets. The sky behind is pale blue, liberally streaked with wispy white cloud.

A juvenile seagull trying it on this time. The framing on this photo is objectively terrible, but it is also good comedy, so. The fish head is more or less in the centre of the image. Hero seagull is walking purposefully into the shot from the bottom left, beak open and screaming. The juvenile seagull is leaving the shot in a tearing hurry, exiting right, with their back to the fish head and advancing hero, feet off the floor and wings up mid-flap. The frame has just clipped the edge of their beak, which emphasises the impression of escape at extreme speed.

The fish head is lying on the floor, and our hero seagull, with wings thrown back and neck at full stretch, is nipping at the beak of an interloper flying in to try to snatch it away. Proper fighting.

Both birds have now landed, and both have their wings thrown up and back. Our hero gull is mid-bite of the interloper's face, looking like they're going for the eyes.

There is a huge crack running right the way across the middle of the wall, a sharp dark jaggedy line which looks to me like a country border through uneven terrain drawn on a map. Presumably it is in the process of being repaired, because someone has put wide white bandage-like patches of fabric across bits of the cracks, one in an upside down L-shape in the lower centre of the image, and two rectangles on the right. But even these bandages are peeling at the corners, and feel haphazard and as if they were urgently applied in an emergency, rather than with planning and forethought. But still, it feels like an act of love and care for the poor wall, and there's a metaphor in there somewhere. It's ultimately a kind and hopeful picture.

Black and white photo. The edge of an external wall, facing us, takes up the right half of the image. There is an ornate stone rose carved into it, with column-like shapes above and below; it looks much more like something you'd see inside a house or on a ceiling than an outside decoration. The stone is pale but worn and stained with time and grime, rendering it here in shades of smoke to iron grey. The left half of the frame is a stone flagged Venetian 'sottoportego' - a low roofed alley between buildings. It is in dark shadow, but you can make out the rough-textured peeling plaster on the walls. The sottoportego opens out into a sunlit space, which looks very bright and blown out in contrast.
