The room and the book.
A post titled 'Good things of the week, Monday 28th September 2026'.

Text reads:

"Dear all,

This week I achieved two crazy things: I completed the last of the first four Silent Hill games, and I finished reading The Bible.

Both of these were pretty intense experiences, and so they are the only things I will be talking about this week. But if you like, I will offer you a third thing: the inimitable and transcendent Mary’s Prayer by Danny Wilson. A song like no other.

Bless you,
mothcub xoxo"A post titled 'Book of the week: The Bible.'

Text reads:

"During September, I challenged myself to read The Bible front to back, and it took me twenty-seven days to cram it all in. It’s pretty fascinating to read it all in one go, and I found myself gripped by some of the historicity of it in particular (the gods and idols Yahweh is enraged by are so interesting - I looked up real golden calves from the rough time period described and felt so amazed to have this direct connection to the artistic depictions of those people).

The brutality of the bible is very arresting, too. It’s kind of transcendant to read through the old testament, its relentless passages about war, submission, wrath, etc, all the greatness of supreme male dominance (!) - and then get to Jesus, a gentle, healing presence who represents a seismic shift in God’s priorities.

One cannot, of course, forget the seraphim - the angels who are all big eye and wings, aflutter. Beautiful, freakish things abound."A post titled 'Game of the week: Silent Hill 4: The Room (PS2, 2004)'.

Text reads:

"I love the particular murky atmosphere of Silent Hill in general, but this quickly became my favourite game in the series.

I like that you are a quiet little man trapped in a grey apartment. I like the looping gameplay that keeps you returning to said apartment through a big, scary hole. I even like the much maligned ‘escort quest’ second half in which you have to go through all the same levels again while keeping your dear neighbour, Eileen, safe.

I like having a sidekick there to start saying weirder and weirder things and sort of pulsating strangely as I beat another monkey-man creature to death with an axe. She comforts me. I couldn’t save her."

Just got Beasted.
A post titled 'Good things of the week, Wednesday 23rd September 2026'.

Text reads:

"Dear all,

I have been in a state of pure, beautiful lethargy. Playing Silent Hill 3 and such. Enjoying a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. Lying down. And riding rollercoasters, of course.

I have neglected my important duty of writing a considered round-up of the media that has occupied me, and this neglect now must end, because, the thing is, I read that book that Mr Beast published, and now I have risen, and I must post.

Listen to me when I say: I did not like it.

Take care,
mothcub xoxo"A post titled 'Ride of the week: Croc Drop (2021)'.

Text reads:

"At Chessington World of Adventures, you can get croc dropped, i.e. you can go on this ride which raises you up nice and slow, before dropping you down into the waiting open jaws of Sobek.

After the initial drop, the ride raises you back up and drops you again, and gives you a few bounces. This has the effect of making me, personally, feel like I am being soothed by the ride. It’s really good. Possibly now my favourite Chessington ride, although it is hard to beat Tiger Rock (formerly Dragon River/Dragon Falls).

Interestingly, the shoemaker Crocs, Inc actually opposed the trademarking of this ride’s name in 2020, but the UK Intellectual Property Office said: we don’t care about that xoxo"A post titled 'Game of the week: Hypnospace Outlaw (PC, etc, 2019)'.

Text reads:

"The enticing old internet graphics and stuffed, chaotic web pages that make up the interface of this game are so absorbing. You are tasked with navigating an alternate ‘90s web that you visit in your sleep via a special headband. There you must act as moderator to the personalities within, and eventually, uncover more sinister secrets.

It’s an engrossing game peppered with startling art and hyper-catchy songs, and the ceaselessly inventive worldbuilding makes Hypnospace feel lived in and real. You can adopt a virtual pet that seems to take big dumps every ten seconds (the dumps, if allowed to pile up, will kill the pet). You can install several types of computer virus. And you can discover that Hypnospace is full of creativity, insularity, and maybe… evil.

Many oscillating skeletons may greet you there."A post titled 'Book of the week: The Most Dangerous Games by MrBeast & James Patterson.'

Text reads:

"I must make it clear to you, dear reader, that ‘good things of the week’ can include… bad things. This is the gorgeous complexity of life and experience that I now bring to you. Don’t be shocked. I read the Beast Book. And man, it is stinky!

I had to know and see with my own eyes the reality of MrBeast’s book about a MrBeast style challenge. Bafflingly, this book is like, ‘what if there was a Beast Games but the Beast Games was run by an evil corporate overlord in a world wracked by international war and/or ill-defined collapse?’ And also, MrBeast is a character and he delivers constant soulful and epic one-liners.

It makes little sense and has the distinct air of sludge - the prose is so formulaic that I struggled to concentrate on it. The characters, setting, events, and premise are all distinctly lacking in texture.

If I read the words “what felt like” one more time, I believe I could spontaneously combust."

The idea here is that because you believe in Christ, circumcision is no longer necessary as a symbol of ultimate commitment to God, loving Jesus subsumes circumcision as a requirement. But they say this in the coolest and most insane way possible (Colossians 2:11).

Seeing "your body is a temple" as not a spiritual feel-good statement urging you to treat yourself to a yoghurt or something, but in context an explicit directive to consider yourself owned by a deity, is so incredible (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Text reads: Flee sexual immorality! "Every sin that a man does is outside the body," but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God's.

The people of Lystra interpreting the two guys they see performing miracles through their own existing mythology is so good... I love the parts in the bible where different religious cultures butt heads (Acts 14:12-13). And Barnabas and Paul are like noooo wtf... we are not those guys 😡
Text reads: They called Barnabas "Jupiter", and Paul "Mercury", because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Jupiter, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and would have made a sacrifice along with the multitudes. But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of it, they tore their clothes, and sprang into the multitude, crying out, "Men, why are you doing these things?"

It's so interesting and fun that Jesus comes in and says basically don't just do good to look good, do good because it's right, but because the justification for this NEVERTHELESS is that it pleases God, you're still to be motivated by looking good, by knowing you're being observed (Matthew 6:18).
Text reads: But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

Exciting!!
A screenshot of Matthew Chapter 1, with highlighted text 'She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.'

Further text reads: Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel," which is, being interpreted, "God with us." Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself; and didn't know her sexually until she had given birth to her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

Need to share with you this maniacal comment I just read on a blog post about the New Yorker Dolly Parton cover lmao
Text reads: Maybe that's the idea. To postmodern shitheads, everybody is as depressed, fraudulent, and nondescript as they are. Talent is a cheat code, beauty is undeserved, smiles are fake, wealth is scammed. The great leveling of the lazy jealous postmodern shithead against the talented and charismatic is to blow a hole in that image via controlled media. So we get the glamorous ultra-talented hardworking superstar as bland and fake and covered by a thin chintzy veneer. (These are bad people, ugly in their hearts.)
