My post ran in New York magazine! What a nice surprise. Thanks to frfr New Yorker Jessica Ziegler for spotting this.

Can confirm. And furthermore, we had to put this back in place after D'Onofrio crashed the New York State pavilion into it.

Lot of that goin' around, apparently! And I get to reuse your alt tag verbatim.

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was on TCM Saturday night. At one point, someone points to the sky and asks Francois Truffaut's character "What is that?" Below is his response, which I never caught before now. That's the movie right there, Richard Dreyfuss' coked-up whinging notwithstanding.

This is what the Las Vegas Formula 1 race looked like from the stands last year. It's actually pretty boring! Swarm of expensive bees flying by every 8 minutes of so. You can't really tell who's winning unless you're a full F1 stan. Don't pay good money to attend; watch it on TV instead. Or don't!

A screencapture of a Bluesky post that reads: "I want to believe, Bluesky. Here is
a photo of some nice clouds as a goodwill peace offering. I like to think it looks like Godzilla fumbling around for a light switch." And the clouds in the photo do kinda look like that.

The City of Las Vegas loves to make "districts." See also: the Arts District, the Gateway District and Brewery Row. (Those are all pretty much the same neighborhood, BTW.) But they're less keen on at keeping existing neighborhoods from slipping into ruin. FWIW, I like Area15. It's touristy, but fun
An X post from the City of Las Vegas which reads:

35.5 acres near AREA15 will officially be called the Vegas Immersive District, a new
entertainment district that will include housing, businesses, new immersive experiences and much more.

It will include:
-100,000 square feet of Horror Themed Immersive Entertainment
-418,000 square feet of retail space
-320,000 square feet of office space
-200 hotel rooms
-585 multi-family housing units

They expect to welcome 3.5 million annual visitors with $796 million in annual on-site
spending. It will create 4,086 jobs.

A maximum of $15.8 million annually in eligible sales tax revenues from this district
will go back to the Redevelopment Agency
to allocate the funds to support other business developments in this area until at least 2037.

#2. Our half-dog-half-weasel, Gigi, soundly sleeping on top of an arm I probably didn't need for anything useful, right? (She's a Chihuahua mix, a total chonk and a little bit of a diva. I love her awfully.)

I've been told that amidst bouts of depression like this one, it's a swell idea to take stock of the things that bring you joy, even if they're minor. #1: Las Vegas' Temu Space Needle, the Strat Tower, silhouetted against fluffy clouds. You don't see that. You might still see 'em in the desert.
Las Vegas' Strat Tower, a 1,149-foot observation tower
with a diamond-shaped top, is silhouetted against a beautiful desert sunset. Two stripes of orange cloud cut across the pale blue sky. Trees encroach into the image on the bottom and right, framing the tower.

Posting a photo here so I can work on my alt tags. They're a little wordy, but I'm a little wordy, so y'know. This was taken at an LCD Soundsystem show in LA, pre-disaster
A giant prop skeleton, in side view, holds aloft a smaller prop skull with the light from a mirrored disco ball radiating outward from it. Some musical instruments are visible in the far background. The predominant light is blue.

I'm in an LA rental right now so all I've got is a tempranillo from Cost Plus. Also edibles and fucking Xanax if things get heavy. See you on the other side, brother.

John Waters at the Las Vegas Book Festival. In the past year I've enjoyed a healthy helping of his schtick: a live show, a phone interview, a tour of his museum exhibit (twice!), this book event. It's been lovely, truly. But now I would kinda sorta like for Waters to, I dunno, MAKE ANOTHER MOVIE

A statement has been prepared for me by machine intelligence: "Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #78,786!" That's fun.

Mine was center-top. Such a cool, audacious, expensive idea. Vinyl records used to be so much fun. (Song-for-song, tho, this particular Led Zeppelin album is kind of a stinker. I can listen to "In The Evening," "Fool in the Rain," "All My Love" -- that's about it.) Link to article in comments below.
The six variations of Led Zeppelin's "In Through the Out Door" album cover, which is a sepia-toned image of a man in white suit and hat sitting at a roadhouse bar burning a "Dear John" letter. (He's accented by a "swipe" of tinted color, like someone wiping off a dirty window.) Six other patrons/employees--a bartender, a lonely woman, a man playing piano, etc.--are watching him; each of the six variations is from one of their perspectives.

Alright, let's see how I do. Predictions are not endorsements, except for Wes Anderson, Hayao Miyazaki, "Poor Things," "Past Lives" and "Godzilla Minus One." In fact, I hope "Godzilla" is a write-in winner in every category where "Oppenheimer" is favored

I've seen both the U2 show and Darren Aronofsky film* at Las Vegas' new Sphere. AMA. *I kinda hated the Aronofsky film. It's spectacular and also corny as hell

Van Halen used this dude on their tour merch, circa "1984." Missing: The rat with a knife and fork and devil-may-care attitude who's about to be smooshed. Hopefully he escaped, but it's more likely Vegas' high winds knocked him off
