If Rufo is going to show such reckless indifference to ties, then he can not wear one, it's a real option. It also seems symbolic of the reckless indifference that Rufo shows to others, keeps speaking out racistly, when he could just leave other ppl alone to enjoy what freedom they have.

The dimple is off center, it's loose in both the sense of around his neck, but the knot itself is like straight up and down instead of triangular, so internal looseness, off to the side as you note. It's like a diagram of things not to do when tie tying.

It is more important to shut this down in the merits, but also I would not trust somebody who ties a tie like a seventh grader. Even Bernie, who often looks like he just came inside from a hurricane, ties knots 10x better than this.

Dia Compe, world leaders in making objects that radiate "this was made cheaply" and elegance in equal amounts
Picture of a DiaComp 128 brake lever looking both 1920s Art Deco But also like it was made out of the simplest metal but elegantly designed so everything fits together very well despite low cost of the materials.

These concrete eagles, from the borderlands between Art Deco and Brutalism, are the most 1940s objects I've ever seen.

Alameda Point Fields are this weird combination of broken-window dilapidated WW2 base buildings surrounding a lively field full of kids playing soccer. Post apocalyptic Renaissance vibes. Imagining a WW2 officer time dropped here, what they would think.
First of two pictures taken in the same location, one facing the dilapidated broken windowed Army base building View in the other direction from the same spot of four or five soccer games being played simultaneously. Art Deco WW2 facade in the distance.

Feel free to ignore me or let me know if I'm being annoying with too many questions, but I wonder this stuff all the time when I'm riding around, why parking protected is not more common.
120
Joseph Morris @morris.cloud · 25/09/2026
Okay, but now I'm trying to figure out the logic of that regulation. Why is there a required buffer from parked cars on the passenger side, but not from parked on the driver's side and from moving traffic?
120
Joseph Morris @morris.cloud · 25/09/2026
The only one I can think of is to use the bike lane sort of as a delivery and breakdown lane to prevent obstructions of car traffic. But I'm curious if there's a better reason than that.
100
Joseph Morris @morris.cloud · 25/09/2026
I'm just curious, what's the reason that parking protected wouldn't be an option here? Like, can't they just (in their bicycle lane option) swap the position of the bike lane and the parked cars?

Being able to SSH to a Kindle probably should not bring me so much joy, but that's just the way it is

I jailbroke an old Kindle, and wrote a server script that generates an image of our family Google Calendar and weather forecast. The Kindle fetches it & updates every hour during the day. It's e-ink, so we can do this for two weeks without charging. It makes me unreasonably happy.
First generation Kindle paperwhite stuck by magnets to a refrigerator displaying a weather forecast and seven-day schedule in a 2x4 grid. The Kindle logo has been removed. The image is low enough resolution that you cannot read the actual appointments.

Obligatory note of respect to Zach D. Carter's Price of Peace, which made me a Keynes stan. Short, funny, conveyed an ideology and a history and a story all at once.

This is not something I probably would have done without AI because the setup's a little bit finicky. Having LLMs as highly skilled text generators and Linux as a highly text-based system works very well together

I just got LUKS hibernation set up on my Ubuntu machine and it's super cool. You can power off your computer and have the disk be encrypted (no worries about data loss if stolen) but then when you power it back on it's right where you left off. #Linux

What I learned from jumpcut -- the long-defunct video editing website, that I made an awesome long video on and then lost when they shut down -- is that every platform is likely to let you down eventually.

This is what I've been using for ~5 years. No syncing except what you do yourself but that's sort of a feature also, in that no cloud version of your unencrypted passwords exists. KeepassDX for android; and there's iOS apps. More like adopting a file format (kdbx) than a single app.

I've been trying bigger models after I got a GPU recently and it seems hard to beat Parakeet unified. It's the most recent nvidia model and it does inverse text normalization -- putting numbers and other things in typical formats -- better than anything else I found

Joseph Morris @morris.cloud · 02/09/2026
Parakeet Unified 0.6B is the way to go if you have a big CPU or GPU or willing to wait a little bit. Canary 180M flash is the fastest for your phone or if you are otherwise in a hurry and accuracy is not so important.

The fact remains that the Netherlands has the lowest fatality rate per kilometer travelled in the world, so if we're going to spend airtime talking about bicycle safety, where the concrete goes is much more important than where the polystyrene goes

I was biking my kids to school this morning at a new campus, and our way goes through an East Oakland park, which can sometimes feel a little bit spooky when it's vacant. So I'm really appreciating the Chinese cultural practice of morning Tai Chi.

Actually, those sources are real, and the previous answer was incorrect—Nancy Mace does have those tattoos.
Reporting from outlets like the New York Post and The Daily Beast confirms that Rep. Nancy Mace revealed getting nine tattoos in short succession between late 2023 and early 2024.
Why She Got Them: In interviews, Mace explained that the body art was a deeply personal choice to help her "reclaim" her identity and process pain following a difficult period in her personal and professional life.
The Tattoos: Her tattoos include literary quotes—such as the famous opening line of Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway—along with distinct traditional sleeve artwork across both arms.
Why It’s In the News: The images went viral on social media when she showed off her visible arm ink while promoting her online show, leading to a wave of online commentary and memes across platforms like Bluesky and X.
