Well, that’s one of the most generous promo periods I’ve ever seen!

Goodness, now I have *AI agents* writing to me with feedback(?) about my articles. Note: I have no idea what this thing means in the part I’ve highlighted in orange:

(2/2) “At this point, it’s better to just build your own gaming PC.” — Good luck finding a decent graphics card, adequate RAM and storage capacity, for less than $1,049 today. “Just buy a Steam Deck” — LMAO ↓

I’ll write here the exact comment I left on the video (a comment probably no one will see because there were already 4,630 comments when I added it): Either Mr Green is a gullible fool, or he's getting paid by Anthropic. Don't waste 50 minutes of your life watching this. #FuckAI

This is how I’ve been listening to music on the go for a year now. Which is how I’ve always listened to music on the go before streaming services got popular. One of my several iPods (today it was a 4th-gen iPod touch), a good pair of WIRED headphones, and off I merrily go.

I love the new Nothing (4a) and (4a) Pro phones. Nothing is rekindling something inside me that used to happen only in the good Apple days: making me want to upgrade even if my current Nothing Phone (2a) is absolutely fine for my needs and still works just as great as the first day I got it.

Your mileage will certainly vary, but for me, in the history of iPhones and iOS versions I’ve used, two peak experiences have been iOS 10 on the iPhone 5 (left) and iOS 12 on the iPhone 5s (right).

Maybe this is entirely subjective, but I’d advise against creating titles with this kind of word layout. At first glance, my eyes moved on the words in such a way that I read: “Living during on a a lighthouse storm” and I thought I was having a stroke or something.

I haven’t watched this video, so I don’t know where this is going, but a friend of mine once bought on eBay a ‘4K’ camera (no brand specified) for €4, and it turned out to be an 8-megapixel digicam from 2006. 4K resolution is, in fact, about 8.3 million pixels.

Rewatching Battlestar Galactica — “33”. What can I say about this series that hasn’t been already said? But really, the first words coming out of my head are, “Where the hell are series like this today?”

I also found this photo, taken on Lake Orta, Northern Italy, in 1939. I just love the atmosphere here, with San Giulio island barely visible in the background. My grandfather is the one in the centre, looking away. The others should be his group of friends. He was 19 here.

Digging in the archives, I’ve also found an envelope full of old photos, mostly of my grandfather and his family, during the years he was in the army and then in WWII. This was taken in 1941 and portrays his division, Telemetry & Comms. He’s barely visible, as he’s with the guys inside the tent.

The Red Floppy has been unearthed. I repeat, the Red Floppy has been unearthed! What this means: That now I need to unearth either a vintage machine or my external USB floppy drive to check what’s on the disk and why I had buried it so deep in my archives. (And no, it’s not p0rn.)

Sometimes after posting something on my blog that gets a bit of traction, I receive quite a number of emails with smart observations or insightful feedback. And sometimes I get stuff like, and I quote: “Now that Alan Dye has left Apple, will you return to the platform??”

Here’s the essential quote from Technopoly mentioned in the video. By the way, this was written… in 1992. Not now or the past month. (Full text in Alt text)
Technopoly eliminates alternatives to itself in precisely the way Aldous Huxley outlined in "Brave New World." It does not make them illegal. It does not make them immoral. It does not even make them unpopular. It makes them invisible and therefore irrelevant. And it does so by redefining what we mean by religion, by art, by family, by politics, by history, by truth, by privacy, by intelligence, so that our definitions fit its new requirements. Technopoly, in other words, is totalitarian technocracy.

This is really well put. (Full quote also in Alt text) From: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEE2...
The simplicity of operation is something I really value about this vehicle. You don't really have all the extra stuff. You don't have the blind-spot monitoring. You don't have the lane-keeping control. You don't have Wi-Fi. You don't have updates.

You got a steering wheel, an ignition, a shifter and, in this car, two pedals. You've got a heater control. This thing never lets you forget what you're here to do, which is operate a piece of machinery. And that's all we're doing. We're operating a piece of machinery for the sake of getting where we want to go or just going for a drive.

The cars that are built today, are built to disconnect you from that experience. That's the point. That's what most modern consumers want. They want the maximum ease of use and they want to have the ability to be distracted from the experience. It's all based around our modern culture's obsession with our phones and our screens. We want to be able to drive our cars while we're on our phones. The simple fact is that modern cars are designed around the idea of being on our phones while we drive.

Spotify has been criticised for so many things in recent times. I, as a premium subscriber since late 2010, am simply baffled that after 15 years I still can’t see the list of musicians playing on any given album. In this album Brad Mehldau isn’t the only performer.

But the problem is, if the battery life of a new iPhone Air is similar to the one of a 3-4-year-old iPhone *now*, how’s it going to be 2 or 3 years from now? You guessed right — bad.

I ‘love’ this security recommendation from Google. They ask a yes/no question, but the only option I can select is ‘Remove’. If I want to keep things as they are, I have to ignore this. If I do so, a badge with a '!' sign remains placed near my account avatar, and it’s annoying, and Google knows it.

When I started reading this email from Dropbox, I was worried: “Starting in October 2025, Dropbox will begin limiting support for macOS 10.13–10.15.” Then I realised everything was fine: Dropbox’s core functionalities won’t be affected, and that’s how I use Dropbox anyway, so all's well for now.

This was my home screen on my iPad 3 in October 2013, running the recently released iOS 7. I found this on an old backup drive. Netbot and Felix were two App.net clients. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App.net) Coast was a browser by Opera made for iOS devices, with a very cool gesture-based interface.

From Apple’s 2010 iOS HIG. The highlighted part has been one of the most disregarded aspects of UI since devices have become impressively capable. And Liquid Glass is no different. “Let’s make all these pointless transparency effects & animations — because we can and because these M-chips can.”

From an interview with Alan Kay, published in 1994 in Interactions Magazine (transcript in alt text):
Do you see the 90s as an era of invention, or are we massaging current technology? Are we explorers, or pioneers?

It depends on who you look at. The commercial world has never been into invention. They're just trying to get by and make money. One of the things that has been detrimental in the commercialization of computer technology - starting in the early 80s - is the lack of pure research. It's hard to keep good people in the universities when you can make so much money writing applications software or working for a computer company. So the number of people doing really top notch research is less than it was in the mid-1970s.

What is getting the attention of these researchers?

Artificial life, the Danny Hillis stuff is really hot, some of the agent things and some work at MIT and Stanford. The biggest problem is that it's hard to invent architectures and with the machines doubling in speed and capacity so rapidly the only things that help you are ways of reducing complexity. Right now I don't think we're doing so well. I think that computers are growing in capacity much faster than our ability to either invent or adopt architectures that help control that capacity.
