We are pleased to present OpenGadget3 to you! Thanks to a magnificent team effort led by Klaus Dolag, we are now releasing code that allows you to perform your own cosmological full-physics simulations — including, of course, the self-interactions of dark matter! arxiv.org/abs/2609.17658

The OpenGadget3 Code for Cosmological Simulations
We present the public release of OpenGadget3 (OG3), a substantially extended and re-organised version of the widely used Gadget-2/3 family of cosmological simulation codes. Since G2 was made publicly ...

How valuable is topological analysis to constrain self-interacting dark matter? In a study led by Adrian Szpilfidel, we show that the genus could help to distinguish between self-interacting and collisionless dark matter. arxiv.org/abs/2608.25632
A plot showing the genus curves for collisionless and self-interacting dark matter.

Searching for signatures of self-interacting dark matter in halos from full-physics simulations: From 3D structure to projected observables
In this work we explore the imprints of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on the structure of simulated galaxy groups and clusters in view of future optical surveys. We find that both baryonic and p...

Could dark matter have dissipative self-interactions? How it affects the gravothermal evolution and whether it helps explain compact dark objects is addressed in our study led by Ludwig Schmidt. arxiv.org/abs/2606.19428
Figure with two panels, the left one shows the ratio of the mass enclosed within r_2D and 4.5 r_2D as a function of r_2D for the gravothermal evolution of a self-interacting dark matter halo with elastic scattering. The right panel shows the same but for dissipative interactions.

Could the ultra-faint faint dwarfs of the Milky Way undergo gravothermal collapse driven by self-interactions of dark matter? As we show in our recent paper, it appears plausible that many of them are in the collapse phase. arxiv.org/abs/2603.04508
Plot of the density as a function of radius for a simulation of a dark matter satellite halo. The density profile is shown at several times together with observed densities from ultra-faint dwarfs.

The isothermal Jeans model for self-interacting dark matter halos works surprisingly well during the gravothermal collapse phase, as we found in a study led by Shubo Li. arxiv.org/abs/2603.01772
Plot of the projected logarithmic density slope as a function of the projected enclosed mass, shown for five different radii. The isothermal jeans model and an N-body simulation are compared with each other.

Valencia Workshop on the Small-Scale Structure of the Universe and Self-Interacting Dark Matter (9-20 June 2025) · IFIC Indico Server (Indico)
Set in Valencia’s historic center, this workshop will address the outstanding challenges in small-scale structure formation of the Universe, encompassing numerical simulations, semi-analytical modeling, and particle-physics models of dark matter. By leveraging data from current and upcoming observational facilities such as Gaia, JWST, Euclid, Rubin, and Roman, we will explore novel probes of their astrophysical signatures, including but not limited to, strong gravitational lensing, stellar...
