This is your yearly reminder that Fuyu persimmon season is officially upon us. Over the next few weeks, I fully intend to consume such enormous quantities that I might just end up as a footnote in the Journal of Medical Toxicology.

This morning I repurposed wide leg trousers into circus-appropriate attire by adding elastic to their hemline and turning them into roomy, beach-themed joggers. A vintage chambray shirt, a pair of leather shoes and a Tuareg copper bracelet made it into a fun outfit.

One of my favorite activities this weekend involved making my first cyanotype print on fabric, producing a unique bandana. Every impression comes from leaves, fronds, seedpods, grasses, and flowers gathered at my campsite, so the design mirrors my surroundings.

This image shows a cyanotype print on fabric, featuring a symmetrical arrangement of botanical silhouettes. In the center, there are two large fern fronds flanking a maple-like leaf, surrounded by various other leaf shapes and small, star-like floral patterns, all rendered in white against a deep blue background.

I knew the tickets for The Devils were going to sell out but it still feels good to see it. Hopefully this interest will lead to more screenings and hopefully a release on physical media.

Watched Douglas Sirk’s Written on the Wind and have a better understanding of what Ebert meant when he described it as a movie where “shocking behavior is treated with passionate solemnity, while parody burbles beneath.” Lauren Bacall is stunning and Dorothy Malone won Best Supporting Actress.

John Cameron Mitchell rocked the venue tonight with both his thoughtful responses in a short Q&A session and performing multiple songs. Hedwig and The Angry Inch still delivers twenty five years later.

Excited to see Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Revolution Hall tonight. It is a 4K screening of the film followed by a special mini acoustic performance by Mitchell. Also, it has been quarter of a century since I’ve seen it first at a movie theater. I’m going to sit with that for a minute.

Queued up The Ghost in the Shell (2026 TV series) and it is unwatchable. Cartoony, in a cheap way. The opening scene of episode one looks like a silly parody of the original movie. I was excited about it but it is a rough ride and a definite miss. Motoko Kusanagi didn’t deserve this.

Nolan’s The Odyssey is what happens when one imbues Odysseus with conscience and ability to reflect. I didn’t expect to feel so much watching a story unfold that I’ve read a dozen times in multiple languages and yet, I walked away from it changed for the better.

Delighted to read that Nolan cited Emily Wilson as his inspiration for his newest film. Looking forward to seeing it tonight. Reddit is crying tears over this fact.

Image is of text - first few lines from Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey. Text reads: Tell me about a complicated man.
Muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost when he had wrecked the holy town of Troy, and where he went, and who he met, the pain he suffered in the storms at sea, and how he worked to save his life and bring his men back home. He failed to keep them safe; poor fools, they ate the Sun God's cattle, and the god kept them from home. Now goddess, child of Zeus, tell the old story for our modern times.
Find the beginning. <end of quotation>

Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria is even better the second and third time. It is a film full of small but significant details hidden in the shadows, subway signs, book titles, graffiti, restaurant windows and more. One thing that was mind blowing is how much of the story is revealed in casual chatter.

The deeper I dive into Ovid’s Metamorphosis translated by Stephanie McCarter, the more I fall in love with her work. She is precise in her language, but not terse, clearly conveying just how packed with meaning Latin is as a language of poetry. No fuss. No embellishments. Just clarity and finesse.
