PROVIDENCE — When snowstorms hit Rhode Island over the past 15 years, Robert J. “RJ” Tassoni supervised snowplows clearing major highways such as Interstate 95.

But when the biggest snowstorm since the Blizzard of ‘78 hit Rhode Island in February, Tassoni, a highway maintenance field operations superintendent, said the state Department of Transportation sent him to keep watch over a pile of salt in the small coastal town of Little Compton.

“Instead of me being on the road, they stuck me in Little Compton, in the middle of nowhere,” Tassoni told the Globe on Monday. “I had to sit at a salt pile and make sure there was no ‘suspicious activity.’”

The only building on the site is vacant and “locked up like Fort Knox, with rats and mice, and no bathroom,” he said. “I was told to sit there for 16 to 18 hours, confined to the truck, doing nothing while it snows.”

Steve Ahlquist text: In response to Foulkes’ Rhode Home Program, Daniel Denvir, co-chair of Reclaim RI, issued the following statement:
“We are pleased to see that the Rhode Home Program could lead to a significant investment in public development of housing. Montgomery County, Maryland, and Atlanta provide promising models, and we are glad to see that Helena Foulkes is ready to learn from them. It’s beyond clear that the private sector cannot solve Rhode Island’s housing crisis on its own. But we need to see more details to ensure that this program would not transfer public funds into private hands: the public should always receive an ownership stake commensurate with public dollars invested. We’d also like to see explicit investment in the state’s public housing authorities, which have long led the way on housing the people who need it the most. We are, however, deeply concerned about the seeming endorsement of the HOPE VI program, which has led to a major net reduction in total public housing units available to the poorest Americans.

i'm going to assume it's this portion that being said, i think mixed-income is good since income segregation can increase social stratification; the only question is whether there would be bridge housing during redevelopment (or if "redevelopment" would just constitute renovation)
