October news: Embracing the Local is Pick of the Month at Donovan's Literary Services. Writing for Midwest Book Review, senior reviewer Diane Donovan calls it an "eye-opening, engrossing story." Publication is November 10. #booksky donovansliteraryservices.com/pick-of-the-...

Deb Brown of SaveYour.Town called Embracing the Local “required reading.” This feels like a clerical error, but she put it in writing, on her own website, so I’ll just be over here gobsmacked. #booksky

Embracing the Local - Building Possibility

Every small town chamber, board and volunteer should be required to read this book. It's funny, irreverent and honest.

I am biased, obviously, but I very much agree. This is a pretty special place.

The habits we all picked up in middle school now get mistaken for signs that AI wrote the sentence. Here’s what “using AI” actually means in my practice, and why the more interesting debate is where each of us draws the line.

AI! Burn Him: Writing With AI, Openly | Glen Cantrell

Glen Cantrell is openly gAI. The harder question for writers is what that means, where the line is, and who gets to draw it.

“In places where witches are burned, one sees nothing else, because in places where they are condemned to the fire, people truly believe that they are witches, and this belief is strengthened by the things people say about them.” - Nicolas Malebranche, The Search After Truth, Book III, Chapter VI.

The idea that anyone should be able to look anything up, for free, is at least as old as the Enlightenment. It has a building in your town and a card in your wallet. September is National #LibraryCardSignUpMonth. Build more libraries than data centers.

I meant to give away 56 advance copies of my book on StoryGraph for my birthday month. Happy 56th to me. 🎂🎉 Except I accidentally set the giveaway to 100. So 44 additional readers are getting a copy because apparently I’m better at my day job than I am at marketing a book. 📉 #BookSky

This is already playing out in California’s Sierra foothills. Our neighbor Calaveras County just adopted a 45-day data-center moratorium while it considers regulation. Rural communities need the authority and capacity to make these decisions for themselves.

My local library was one of my first safe spaces. Somewhere to wander, discover things, ask questions, and simply exist without being expected to explain myself or buy anything. Decades later, I still think of libraries as essential civic infrastructure. Librairies matter. 🙏

The bio mentions Ellie, Radar, and Izzy, so I suppose further introductions are required. Here’s the crew, doing what they do at rest and under less controlled conditions.

Small-town civic life, belonging, usefulness, volunteer exhaustion, leadership, and what happens when professional problem-solving collides with a community that insists on being made of people. All I wanted was a glass of wine. #Nonfiction #DebutAuthor

Bonjour, Bluesky. I’m brand new here. I moved to a small California mountain town, accidentally became Chamber president, wrote a memoir about it, then spun up a tiny indie press to publish the damn thing. Looking for my community: writers, readers & indie publishers 👋 #BookSky #WritingCommunity
