I can never remember which one is simulation and which is simulacra

Well if you had to choose between quietly giving people lots of money or getting up on stage and yelling for three hours, what would you do. Be honest

I hope pawing though my posing history for that at least made you feel a little gross You don't know me and you're way out of line. Go get your head right

I thought Mitsubishi's whole deal was if you're a defense contractor and industrial equipment manufacturer and also a bank then you might as well sell a few cars

I do not like the plastic shirts ad, I do not like the man in it who looks like he has the wrong number of organs, and if a clothing company runs the same ad for two years then yes obviously it is somehow a scam

I think I prefer the political ads made by firms that don't realize a lot of people watch sports on mute

But we all have the pictures. They're public, the newspapers published them months ago
A photo of John J Cafaro, owner of the contracting firm that slimed the Washington Monument reflecting pool, wearing a mildly preposterous grey double-breasted jacket with a black collar and a moustache from the 1970s

The vast majority of empty housing isn't being held for tax purposes, it's in transition: homes being sold and rental vacancies We can argue about what occupancy rate is optimal in a healthy economy but it's going to be less than 100%

Hey good job with the stalking there, very normal behavior to add to the impression you're already making

It's notable that even after an aside noting the problem of centering white kids you're assuming my kids are white, and very much not offering up the same kinds of choices for nonwhite kids

Forcing people into something that has a success rate under 30% when it's *voluntary* seems like bad idea even before we get into everything else wrong with this

I was going to go with "The Cola Out of Space" but you really need a hair trigger to get a riff like that off in time eh

Sub-compact? I mean it's not a 3-row SUV but even before the '27 redesign it was rather noticeably larger than, like, a Fiat 500

Not doing anything to allay my discomfort with most of quantum physics coming down to "we've constructed an algebra that fits observations but have no idea what's going on in there beyond that" (it's fine, I'm a grownup, I can handle it)

"Ellison doesn't want an incompetent hack running CNN" only gave me joy for the brief moment needed to realize "oh he wants a competent one then"

The only physical difference red-dye diesel has from normal diesel is the red dye It's cheaper because it's not taxed. It's dyed to prevent farmers (and other legal users) from turning around and reselling it

Look if you don't like the phrasing of the joke that's fine but it's pretty clear that you're nitpicking and the large majority of colts are unshod
100
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
What I'm hearing here is that with the exception of an extreme type of work, horses that are unshod because they're too young are called colts
100
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
If you're not even a yearling anymore you're definitely not a colt
110
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Then you might want to avoid referring to previous controversies as "only the usual human mistakes"
030
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
You don't shoe colts though, horses are left unshod until they're like 4 years old

Sure Chuck E Cheeze was a con artist, but before we get too judgemental let's remember that Showbiz featured Antioch The Birthday Spider

It should have stayed in the back of the house, the line has reasons to talk about production in terms like this some of the time but you gotta hide that view of the trade from the customer

You're using technology when you just dig a hole in the ground More like "does it require electronics." Like yes you can have electric lights, you just can't have any microchips. OK maybe the little one in the LED lightbulb but if you try to automate the toilet paper we're going to hunt you down

In addition to not having a clock, we know neurons are not the only cells in the brain involved in cognition, neurons do not have static thresholds, brains do not buffer output and prepended it to the next input, etc Brains aren't computers. It's just a metaphor
010
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Or possibly, maybe, a biological neuron is quite a bit more complex than a single static parameter in a weighted graph data structure, even without quantum effects
210
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The problem is that the underlying design of the chatbots is inherently inefficient, a neural net doesn't work at all if it's too small or constructed from too little data And we hit diminishing returns years ago; so predictable to everyone except the guys yelling "scale is all you need"

God knows GenX is tedious about it but editing a couple lines in an .ini file to get a video game working really did deliver a hell of a nerd endorphin rush

Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The thing is though, there are uncountably many things on the internet that I'm completely oblivious to, despite being Too Online Whatever is going on, it's not *only* easier access; something, be it the zeitgeist, algorithms, the media, whatever, is selecting subcultures or tendencies to surface
020
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
OK, even if we want to think about zeitgeist as something independent of history, it's worth considering that Up came out in the same year as Avatar, and I remember it as having more weight in the zeitgeist than Avatar, which had three times the box office receipts
010
Mop Bucket @mopbucket.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Sales are a pretty crappy measure of the zeitgeist to begin with Casablanca grossed less than a million inflation-adjusted bucks on initial release but we all quote it far more often than Avatar
