this page is a bit cryptic partly cuz some things i have figured out for the sequel already and a lot of things i haven't. but also cuz Zöe has never been good at explaining things clearly. at least she's finally stopped name dropping. she's still young, she'll work things out and either get better at clarity or double down on being cryptic and puzzling. she might do the latter just for the fun of it.

alt-textra: i'm one of those people for whom pot does nothing. i can't tell any difference when i'm on pot. i have gotten the giggles once on my first try. maybe i'm biased for that reason, but i really don't likie the pot interpretation of Puff, the Magic Dragon. but mostly cuz the band has expressed openly time and again that it isn't about pot.

but to be fair my own interpretation could be off the mark. my feelings about it are that it's a deeply sad song under all the fun fantasy. i don't envy Puff and i am sad Jackie Paper moves on and grows out of Puff (and doesn't live forever). to me that kind of loss childhood wonderment is heartbreaking.

alt-textra: i snuck in lots already, but here i'll tell you a memory. in the early 90s Peter, Paul and Mary had been doing performances for children that ultimately led to the album Peter, Paul and Mommy, Too. i remember PBS was showing one of those performances and mom and i watched it together and i think it was then that i realized how sad of a song Puff, the Magic Dragon really is. as a parent watching my own kids grow up and having that epiphany that we don't go on forever and how much sadder it would be to be a dragon watching everyone you ever loved go away. it feels like the earliest seed for this story.

also i kinda want to put a dragon in the sequel. his name will be Fred.

and no i don't believe it is about pot. 🙃

"Wait! Come back!" e_ yells teasingly at Grace. little q. seems to know this flirty side of of their partner and cuddles them.

this is where we leave e_ and little q. in this story, the two goofy fae folk whose early adventures started this whole yarn. with only 12 pages left, there's only one thing left to address; that oh so silly (sillier than e_) fairy who's at the start and end of it all.

continuing from the previous comics page, the fae little q. goes on a bit of an existential quandary about one of their mothers. "Aestre says she isn't a goddess, but if SHE'S not, then what IS a goddess and what is she? she says she's never met any gods, so are there any?"

Grace, slumped back and who's had too much to think, adds "i dunno, but i'll tell you, that woman runs circles around me-"

"all of us" e_, a púca, chimes in.

e_ continues in the third person which they often do, "e_ thinks she is like a fifth elemental Fae- a product of the four" referring to the four elemental Fae mentioned in previous chapters. as a refresher they are Tat; the Salmon of Knowledge, Kek; the Tree of Life, Pip; the Bird of Song, and Bob; the Salamander of Fire. though these characters do not know their names.

"to know the names of the four is to become a force of Nature" little q. says in their high whispery voice, "-So she must be Mother Nature, Herself!"

"let's just go with that, then" Grace concludes as this conversation is clearly wigging her out something fierce.

alt-textra: i always thought of Aestre as a sort of force of Nature. something still vulnerable, but strong and ancient and commanding respect without demanding it.

the story of her great war will get a much longer explanation in a future tale. for now, it is only important to know she fought it against someone very important and dear to her and by the end she was the only one standing.

i thought about the title of the sequel being Time & Eternity to reflect Ever & Always but how different Ever & Always ended up being from Pieces of Lingering Dust, i have no idea what that sequel will ultimately look like. and besides, i'm really attached to the working title "Her Secret Name".

continued from previous comic's page. three figures, a púca named e_, a human named Grace, and another fairy named little q. have been talking about history, hijinx, and now the existential problems of being fae.

"i've learned many things talking to Aestre & Deirdre! for instance, Aestre planted the first oak here in the Ever-Changing Brambles!"

this news seems to shock Grace though little q. is less fazed by their two mothers' extensive histories.

"She had always intended to escape here when the time was right!" e_ continues.

"wait-How old is she?" Grace asks. she had been told a story about Aestre in an earlier chapter about that hints at her being a very very very old woman possibly tens of thousands of years old or older, still.

"apparently" little q. says in their high whispery voice, "she doesn't actually know herself!"

"Mama says there is more magic in these simple woods than in the whole of Druidia" little q. continues, their Mama being Deirdre.

"but it takes a special kind of soul to see it..." they finish.

"i can believe that" Grace adds smiling. maybe Grace feels a lot more magic than she once did.

alt-textra: i use the spelling of Magick and magic together a lot. to me Magick is a craft and Magic is a state of Nature so i use the two, though i admit it has not been consistant. i may make that a priority in editing.

side note; i'm trying to be as specific as i can in these alt-texts, and sometimes i wonder if i'm not doing enough or if some of what i say is superfluous. i do the alt-text as a bit of a service to anyone who needs it and while i like to sneak little extra bits in here, this should be mostly as a way to help people with the images' contexts. if anyone has advice on how i can do this better please let me know. as a somewhat decently sighted person i don't fully appreciate the challenges and would like to make these better for those who need them.

continued from yesterday, e_, a púca, Grace, a human, and little q_, a fairy, talk about Grace's unique ability to transform into a fox through Magick.

"Oh my God, that sounds adorable, you HAVE to show us!" little q. clasps their hands together.

"Oh, sure!" Grace says, but then remembering they are at a wedding adds "maybe not right now..."

"funny it should be a fox!" e_ chimes in.

e_ continues as narrator, "Deirdre said your 10th Great Grandmother could turn into a fox! it's even thought she used this guise to sneak in to get an audience with Queen Elizabeth!"

this panel shows the historic Grace O'Malley as an old fox wearing a hooded cape.

cut back to the present Grace who would no doubt get sideways glances from the historic figure says, "wait, i know this story! she threw one of the Queen's monogrammed handkerchiefs into the fire after blowing her nose with it! -and Lizzie just laughed it off!"

she says Lizzie in a way that suggests even this Grace would have put the Queen on buddy terms with herself. Grace never does follow any of that "your highness" nonsense as demonstrated in the chapter "Please to See the King".

"she coulda lost her head over that stunt!" Grace laughs, the humor being infectious enough to cause little q. to snort with laughter.

"you do come from a long line of rascals" e_ tells Grace with a 😜 face.

alt-textra: it is no secret the historic figure Gráinne Ní Mháille, known commonly as Grace O'Malley is one of my favorite figures in all of history. enough about Robin Hood, where are all HER movies at??

i refer to her as Grace's 10th great grandmother, though i'm not sure exactly if the math would work out that way. i chose the number cuz it felt distant enough. the fact that Grace retains the name O'Malley is highly unlikely but again this is a fairy tale so you're going to have to accept a few full on escapes from reality! 🙃 believe me, i'm editing this beast and there are way more continuity goofs than this!

as a side note; the edits are mostly minor but there will be a few changes as i go through everything. as the kids say, just make it exist and you can make it gooderer later.

Grace, transformed into a literal fox is surrounded by three bunnies, a tan colored one, a gray one, and a brown bunny (Mary Addie, and Alisha, all who are friends of Grace). the brown bunny Alisha says, "Oh this just figures!"

alt-textra: not much to say today, but yes, this is one of many reasons i want to do a sequel. Grace as an actual fox seems like so much fun i am not passing it up.

e_ admits, finally, "oh, very well! Zöe and i just wanted to have a bit of fun with you, it was meant with love"

for a brief moment we cut to Zöe at the DJ, arms in the air singing along with the music.

The song is The Kabouterdans from the children's show Kabouter Plop which i will hear no hate for. the lyrics are from the chorus "Draai een keer in het rond, stamp met je voeten on de grond, Zwaai ja armen in de lucht, Ga nu zitten met een zucht!" this translates to "Turn one time roundabout, Stomp with feet on the ground, Sway your arms in the air, Now sit with a sigh". there will be a link in the comments to the original video so your saturday may be filled with whimsy and silliness cuz i believe we all need that right now.

alt-textra: years ago i was having a particularly bad day and a long time Dutch internet friend shared this clip with me to cheer me up and it has been one of my favorite ridiculous things, ever. this show was meant to entertain toddlers, but it warmed the heart of an unhappy thirty-something (i forget exactly what year this was). Zöe's development was largely inspired by Kabouter Plop and the classic book Gnomes by Wil Huygen as well as a few real life friends who never forgot what whimsy is.

"i didn't say it was a love potion" little q. says.

Grace puts her arm around e_ who doesn't seem to know they're already sunk, "i really got to teach you to lie better" Grace tells them.

"it was just a teensie drop" e_ doubles down.

"this is empty." little q. shakes the bottle upside down to demonstrate its lack of liquid contents.

"i had three servings of that punch!" Grace yells.

"relax," e_ tells her, "this kind just makes you extra cuddly." waving their hand.

little q. reads from the bottle, "*side effects may vary."

"Jaw-Cuze!" Grace yells at e_ in complete butchery of anything resembling French.

"Moi?" e_ replies innocently, who while knowing French themself does not use it much as the author is very poorly fluent and would require a bit of help.

"Whatever has e_ done?" they say continuing their act.

"Oh ypou know perfectly well, e_ who doesn't even like punch!" Grace grins.

"i don't know what you're talking about! besides, my proper title is e_ of the willows, you know that!" e_ attempts dismissiveness.

"i also know your pranks." Grace continues, "they all have a certain Jen-Nay-Say-Quaw!" with apologies to both French speakers and Texans.

"your Texan accent is so cute when you try to Par-Lay Fran-Say!" e_ says in an even worse mock of a Texan accent. they stick out their tongue at Grace.

"at least you can tell where my accent is from!" Grace comes back showing what may be the only ounce of pride she has in her home state.

alt-textra: which brings up the subject of e_'s voice. e_ speaks in a complex accent blending a Dublin and Northern French accent plus whatever exactly would count as a Púca's natural accent. feel free to be inventive here as the author is unsure, as well. the reason for this mix of accents is that e_ was schooled in several places in the human world as well as Druidia. this is mentioned in a much earlier little q. story where e_ reveals they are a princet.

e_ may not be the wisest character, but they are learned and clever in their own right. of the main four i feel like little q. is the wisest and they'll be in the next couple pages starting tomorrow!
