This is why I’ve grown much more uncomfortable with nostalgia bait but also why as bad as it is, there’s a vast world in what you do find even if it means surfing to an island. And from a talk I saw recently much of what was culture before the internet was institutional memory only.

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

I wished people realized that but it also means having to deal with adults(& some kids) that don't believe in that in a world atm that wants less friction than more of it. It's also fear of that kind of openness as an existential discomfort in the face of others experiences than being a good person

Sounds like the author thinks everyone knows what's only on the radio like how it was in the 90s & 2000s but things changed & keeps changing. And the way people experience media and how depends on a variety of factors. It's surfing to islands on the internet but also a dark forest at the same time.

comfortable with it and tried to redefine growing up as not having to give up stuff from childhood. But now it does feel like they want to be treated like they were as kids in adult bodies in their 30s-40s. But I fear should we keep trying to go that way, the adults and kids will be illiterate.

Part of me wonders if the need for moral instruction came because it felt there was this vacuum or abyss from the real world thus putting way too much expectations on the media we consume. But also it's an emotional kind of illiteracy where people can't see themselves as layered anymore to cope.

I've wondered about that kind of protagonist and especially if it's a response to trauma or a certain kind of hopelessness? Growing up I recall characters like that on the CW or WB but it makes me wonder if it was also a kind of dormant nihilism that self-deprecation put a lock and key on.

I've googled the term cultural cachet and I still don't know what it means. Although I haven't listened to FM radio since...2022 and even then it was NPR, the local college radio stations, or this station that played Slavic music. I do feel like nowadays it's paradoxically a monoculture and not.

I get those about online gambling but also ads that have no footage, just audio only like a radio drama. I did get ads lately for a hoodie albeit to look like a wizard. Though it does remind me of ads where they tried to claim most soap is bad for you. It's like psychological warfare at this point.

It's that uniqueness that makes it wonderful but also sometimes difficult for others to comprehend. Or trying to have that all-encompassing image or stereotype to picture rather than realize how varied a person can be and people within that umbrella are too.

I feel like whenever I see this, I have the urge to ask,"so what's the point?". Like I never heard of an artist that felt happy just writing for the market alone. Even worse, making it their job which doesn't sound great given how many oldies in this field either succumb to AI or become alone.

I mean I dealt with those who have a kind of superiority from being Hinu and Indo=Caribbean. Like aside from the other problems, on the diaspora side, there was a lot of islamophobia growing up. But still love the fusion culture though, not the chauvinism or assimilationistism.

I think saying I'm Guyanese would be the better answer between those wanting to be more white AND those wanting to be indian but dropping the Caribbean side. But I think it's been hard to talk about how lusting for whiteness really did a number and shaped how we view others under that desire.

It's a problem true. I'd go as far to say it's between hurt people hurt people and broken toilets. And from what I've seen there's Indo-Caribbeans that try to be more Indian if not wanting to be white, less on the Caribbean side. And I've felt it lends to another kind of chauvinism. +

I’ve heard of term being like a psyop from a Guyanese academic I follow. But on the other hand it’s hard for some people to grasp how diverse being Guyanese can be if I just said I was Guyanese.
