To honor the great Jim Lovell, who died today at 97, I recommend you watch both Apollo 13 and the HBO series From the Earth to the Moon.

The game was decided by the home plate umpire, who gave Mike Trout a bases loaded walk with two outs. Two of the called balls were actually strikes. Per Umpire Scorecard, this call led to 3 runs, the biggest swing I have ever seen from Ump Scorecards.

It is fine to credit Schmitt & Lee, but game winner was Phil Cuzzi. Look at the image below. Pitches 3, 4, 5 were strike 3 to Chapman. His single set up the inning and decided the game. Look at Harper’s ABs. In 5th, strike 3 on K was way above zone. In 8th, 1st 2 strikes were far out of zone.

This photo of Casty and JT scoring in tandem on Stott’s 7th inning double is worthy of a Pulitzer. Click to see it landscape mode.

I got this chart from Thomas Nestico. It suggests that the Phillies’ defense costs them more than a run game, relative to Atlanta. That seems like a problem.

The Phillies won a game! On Jackie Robinson Day, no less! So we are celebrating by watching “42,” the biopic about Jackie that stars the brilliant Chadwick Boseman as the man himself.

Any doubts we may have had about the willingness of the NYT to compromise even the most fundamental values has been dispelled by today’s Spelling Bell. We are doomed.

Today’s Spelling Bee has something that never appeared in the first 2,499 Bees: an S.

“Flow” is a brilliant animated motion picture about four animals trapped in a flood in South America. Any movie where a capybara is one of the stars works for me, but I will bet the film will work for you, too.
