Lanes make sense yes. But my gripe is, if there were some 405 in the sky that kept getting jammed, another 3 or 4 lanes could easily be created in the sky. Whereas on the ground it requires massive construction / leveling buildings / etc.

I think it’s in large part due to having a new bassist in Justin Chancellor. Though he joined on AEnima, that was just to fill in and put the album out. Lateralus is the dividing line where he started having creative input.
