Hey Kate, thank you for your anger at these for-profit health startups. I think one sincere question I have is why you chose to define a separate “perimenopausal industrial complex” rather than situate it within the “medical industrial complex”?

The problem isn't mass-hysteria induced by telehealth startups, which threaten to “eclipse the current healthcare system.” The problem is the healthcare system and a culture of capital-driven privatization that exploits that system’s failures.

We're dealing w/ (among other things) a failing healthcare system, in denial about the impacts of COVID & continuing along well-worn grooves of medical misogyny & racism. What it can offer remains largely inaccessible to an increasingly more sick populace & grifters prowl to profit off it.

COVID is allegedly “over” so we lack collective awareness around its impact. There’s ~400 million cases of LC worldwide & many go w/out diagnosis, struggling alone with symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, heart palpitations, nervous system dysregulation, and more thesicktimes.org/2026/04/14/l...

to complicate this piece further: the Royal College of Nursing recently published clinical guidance on diagnosis confusion between Long COVID/perimenopause. And middle-aged women have increased risk of LC. For more/sources, see @thesicktimes.org reporting last month thesicktimes.org/2026/07/10/s...

our healthcare/insurance system isn't set up to effectively offer care. When medical misogyny or racism blocks access to care, People with money seek out options that profit off of systemic failures. But most are left figuring out how to fill the gaps & suffer for it www.kff.org/health-costs...

When a doctor doesn't believe you or respect your treatment decisions, what do you do? If you can afford it, you find someone else/pay out of pocket. If not, you're stuck with what you get. And if you can't access healthcare (& many can't, especially after ACA/Medicaid cuts), you're screwed.

This plays into gaslighting & overlooks deeper, more pressing systemic failures around the medical industrial complex, healthcare crisis, and medical misogyny & racism. It can even be put in conversation with the ongoing, mass-disabling COVID pandemic.

basically, our healthcare/insurance system SUCKS & isn't set up to care for us. When medical misogyny or racism block people’s access to care, those with money seek out options that profit off of systemic failures. People without are left with few options. www.kff.org/health-costs...

Illinois law says local officials can't help federal agents deport people. So how did so many residents end up on ICE's radar through information shared by local police, sheriffs, and prosecutors? I filed 394 FOIA requests to find out. (An @injusticewatch.org partnership with @theintercept.com!)
