Grid of four square painted landscape scenes separated by thin white borders, all in bright green tones. Top left: a shaded woodland pond where two tall, slender trees with gray-brown trunks rise from dark, still water that reflects blue sky and foliage. A fallen log slants across the water at center, a mossy green log lies at lower left, and dense leaves fill the background. Top right: a marsh with tall green reeds and grasses in the foreground and tan, feathery reed plumes rising against a flat gray overcast sky. A branch with yellow-green leaves hangs in from the upper left, and dark water with thin bare twigs sits at lower right. Bottom left: the interior of a forest with several dark, nearly black tree trunks in the foreground. Sunlit yellow-green leaves and low undergrowth glow behind them, and the ground is covered with dark leaf litter and twigs speckled with light. Bottom right: a shallow stream curving from the lower foreground toward the center of a wooded scene, with pale pinkish-brown water and banks. Several fallen logs cross the stream in the middle distance, reddish earth shows on the left bank, and a grassy bank and bright green leaf canopy fill the right and upper areas.

The Hearsterveer ferry across the Vecht river north of Zwolle, one of only two remaining hand-pulled cable ferries in the Netherlands. Wat een prachtig land is het toch ook. Volgende week alweer terug.
A small ferry carrying two people crosses a narrow, tree-lined waterway. Several old wooden boats are moored among reeds and lily pads in the foreground, with lush vegetation along the banks and a partly cloudy summer sky overhead. A Dutch flag flies from the ferry.

The Union army was 25% foreign-born, rising to nearly 45% when including second-generation immigrants.
They were fighting an American South that was between 90% - 95% native born.
Not surprised people named "Kinzinger" are celebrating the defeat of the South, considering the German 'Forty-Eighters' were the driving force behind radicalizing Northern immigrants into a ideological war against heritage Americans.

The UNION won. And I'm proud to say that the Kinzinger family, though just off the boat from Germany, fought to preserve the union.

Again, I always go to sea as a sailor, because they make a point of paying me for my trouble, whereas they never pay passengers a single penny that I ever heard of. On the contrary, passengers themselves must pay. And there is all the difference in the world between paying and being paid. The act of paying is perhaps the most uncomfortable infliction that the two orchard thieves entailed upon us. But being paid,—what will compare with it? The urbane activity with which a man receives money is really marvellous, considering that we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills, and that on no account can a monied man enter heaven. Ah! how cheerfully we consign ourselves to perdition!

Indeed, Weiss' handpicked "Evening News" anchor, Tony Dokoupil, is set to preside over his lowest monthly ratings since taking over the program in January, averaging just 3.8 million viewers in July, according to Nielsen data obtained by Status. While July is traditionally the doldrums of summer television, the fact that Dokoupil is now regularly averaging fewer than 4 million viewers-a once-unthinkable threshold for the broadcast to fall below — is almost certainly setting off alarm bells inside CBS News. It marks the fourth consecutive month the program has averaged under 4 million viewers and the second-lowest-rated July for the "Evening News" this century. The only lower July came last year, which CBS News nonetheless touted in a press release after narrowly beating it by a mere 2%.
Meanwhile, under Weiss, "CBS Mornings" has also collapsed to record lows.
According to the ratings data obtained by Status, July marked the lowest-rated month ever for the Gayle King-led program, both in total viewers and among those in the the advertiser-coveted 25-54 age demographic. The show, which has been down a third host since Dokoupil moved to the evenings, has averaged just 1.6 million viewers, marking the second consecutive month it has fallen below 1.7 million. Not good!
That track record does not inspire much confidence for "6o Minutes." As one television executive commented to me, "Her overhaul of 'CBS Mornings' and
'Evening News' have done nothing but drive the ratings down to historic lows, so there is little hope these '6o Minutes' changes will do anything but the same."

It's not just that people don't want data centers in their backyards or regions. We basically know why they don't want them. They'll bogart all the electricity and water. Drive up rates. Wreck the environment. There's another dimension of it though. The throughline of this age is that you've got these big tech platforms that can do anything they want. It is a society-driving spectacle that is there in plain sight and yet still under-appreciated. Al itself captures all of this. We're told by its makers that it will take away everyone's jobs, require unimaginable new supplies of energy, has a non-trivial shot at leading to the extinction of the human race... and this is the argument of its supporters! The point is that there is this very small group of men running a handful of mega tech platforms and they're making the decisions and it basically doesn't matter what we think. Not just you and me individually but us collectively. It's their world. We're just living in it.
Some of this is the fact that these companies are so big and their monopoly power is so great and they have such stores of money that they just roll over everything in their path. But it still has something to do with the nature of the tech world and the internet itself. It's ubiquitous and yet not quite anchored anywhere. And yet data centers change all of that. They're vast, physical, brick-and-mortar fortresses. And they come under the rule of local zoning laws and water districts and the regular bric-a-brac of local self government. And suddenly that changes everything.

For Musk, the notion that white nations are threatened by non-white contamination is a starting point-something to be reasoned from, not reasoned to. As we have argued, Musk is in many ways classically fascist:
He believes race and culture are inseparable. His vision is international: in defense of the west, white nations must globally if loosely unite.
What are these nations, exactly? In the UK, the far right claim to be nationalists. But they hate the government, the Church of England, the National Trust, its most famous TV shows and TV presenters, and even the King (not to mention its schools, universities, and police). What is the Englishness they are defending, if not these things? It's the racial and cultural nation.
Unlike the nation as understood even by some mainline conservatives. then, the fascist nation is not real. It is a past conceived in myth that has supposedly been lost to contamination and degradation-and must be willed back into existence through violent ethnic purgings. These purgings, really, are what will bring the myth to life. Outside of the racial nation-which isn't a geographic unit but something more mystical-lie only darkness, threats, and huge, teeming, masses of inferior humanity.
The mythic past and the promises of purity are all fantasy, of course, but the purgings are brutally real. The big through line here is vicious dehumanization: No kids have died due to USAID cuts-none that we need to concern ourselves with, as they don't serve the higher cause of the nation. All Muslim immigrants in the UK are rapists and murderers; as Musk suggests, asking if you're "anti-Muslim" is akin to asking if you're pro-rape and pro-murder. No one who has been killed by ICE is innocent; as Trump's border czar Tom Homan puts it, to avoid violent death at the hands of ICE agents, don't antagonize them. No Somali living in Minnesota is there legitimately; as Trump himself says, all should be subject to removal by definition.
Musk constantly talks about a technological future of dazzling plenty that will extend to all: In the Economist interview, he predicted that by 2036 we'll see such "amazing abundance" that money will become meaningless. But his own rhetoric suggests he envisions something more like techno-utopia only for a select interplanetary elite-after the dust settles from racial apocalypse on Earth. And as he himself has cryptically intimated on occasion, he's gearing up his Space rockets for exactly that future.

Tellingly, over the weekend, Musk explicitly labeled Beddoes a "traitor to the West" for confronting him with facts about DOGE's moral crimes.
Telling the truth, or even evincing concern, about the humanitarian impact of our actions on the global poor risks aggravating that
"civilizational empathy" that so threatens Western Civilization, you see.
As the West is inseparable from white civilization for Musk, this is tantamount to labeling Beddoes with the white supremacist epithet "race traitor."Indeed, if you watch Musk in this interview, as he sits there smugly abusing Beddoes in his edgelordy leather jacket, you can see something remarkable unfolding in real time. As Musk repeats emphatically that
"zero died" in the face of obvious contrary evidence, he's visibly sensing his growing power to communicate with fascistic tropes to like-minded western- and white-civilizational warriors everywhere.
All this was visible during another big moment in the Economist interview: Musk's claim that the United Kingdom is slipping into civil war. Musk often describes the UK as under criminal and migrant siege, and Beddoes took him to task for it. "You have painted" Europe and the UK as "overrun with terrifying Muslim immigrants" and beset with "rape on every corner," she said acidly.
But Musk stood by his depiction of a Muslim invasion. He insisted a
"large and growing" group "whose beliefs are antithetical to western beliefs" had entered the country, predicting it's only a matter of time until there's a "reckoning," which will come when they "try to implement their views."One of us-Toby-lives in the UK, and can categorically state that Musk's depiction of the country is complete nonsense. In most major cities you can walk around by yourself late at night without a second thought. The country is palpably safer than it was only a few decades ago, and would rank among the least violent cities in the U.S.
What's more, thanks to her empire, Britain has already had centuries of non-white, non-Christian immigration. The first curry house opened in
1810. Every generation has seen apocalyptic warnings of immigration unleashing rivers of blood that never materialize. Racist and political violence come almost exclusively from white nativists and the political right. Studies show the areas of the UK with the most immigrant settlers have seen the fastest declines in crime.
But here, again, Musk's depictions of the UK are not meant to be debated empirically. When Beddoes asked Musk if he's "anti-Muslim," he rejoined:
"I'm against rape and murder." The linking of Muslims to rape and murder was immediate, unevidenced, instinctive. It's not subject to debate. It's true by definition.

Whereas the Defendant's Response to Order to Show Cause sets forth rational and
arguments in response to the Court's Order, the Plaintiff's Response is filled with hyperbolic
rhetoric seeking to impose punitive sanctions on the Department for availing itself of the process
the Court afforded it. As both the Order, the Court's memorandum opinion ("Op.") (ECF No. 16),
and the Court's Minute Order to set deadlines make clear, the Court has not ordered "the
immediate production of documents," but rather has ordered the Department to "show cause if [it] declines to do so." Op. 48; see also Order 1-2. The Court expressly denied the Government's request to issue a stay to the preliminary injunction because "Ms. Phang is not requesting the
immediate production of documents." Id.

My neighbor cut down a 40-year-old Japanese
Maple while I was away.
Advice needed
Join
Location: Colorado, USA.

Just got back to my place near Fort Collins after a week on the road and I am losing my mind. My neighbor took it upon himself to hire a "landscaping" crew (probably just some guys with a chainsaw) to remove a mature Japanese Maple that was fully on my property. His excuse? He said the needles and leaves were messing with his "mountain view" and "fire mitigation" efforts.

The tree was roughly 40 years old and was the centerpiece of my yard. I called an arborist immediately. He told me that since this is Colorado and the tree was that established and healthy, the replacement value is astronomical. He is drafting a formal appraisal but hinted that we are looking at 20k to 25k easy just for the tree, let alone the logistics of getting a crane into my backyard.

I know Colorado has statutes regarding timber trespass. My lawyer already mentioned treble damages because the guy admitted he did it on purpose while I wasnt home to stop him.

The neighbor had the gall to offer me a couple hundred bucks for "the inconvenience" and told me to just buy a couple of saplings at a local nursery. I refused to take his money and told him to wait for the process server.

Has anyone dealt with treble damages in CO specifically for ornamental trees ? This guy basically nuked my property value for his porch view and I am not planning on letting this go. l feel like a jerk for wanting to sue my neighbor into bankruptcy but the sheer entitlement is what gets me.

Natural daylight creates strong contrast across the face, emphasizing the forehead, cheeks, and chin. The composition is tightly cropped around the head and shoulders, giving the portrait an intimate and confident presence.

Tune in this evening at 6pm eastern for an hour of crunchy rock and roll and cringey euro trash, handpicked by @laminda.bsky.social and yours truly.
Promotional poster for “The Mister Ferocious Radio Hour” on WFMU Rock ’n’ Soul Radio. Large red and gold lettering dominates the top of the image against a pale, wrinkled-paper background. Text below announces the broadcast time, Saturday, May 16, 6–7 PM ET, with the WFMU Rock ’n’ Soul Radio logo and website underneath.

In the foreground, two adults and a small alien figure stand on a cobblestone path near the lighthouse of the former island of Urk in the Netherlands. The adults’ real faces appear through face-in-hole cutouts in a display depicting people in traditional Urk clothing, while the alien child figure is dressed in matching traditional attire with a striped shirt and suspenders. A flying saucer in the upper-right corner adds a surreal retro science-fiction element to the composition.

Come find me on Washington Street this Sunday from 11 to 6, for one of Hoboken's best outdoor events. I'll have original paintings on hand — a great chance to see the work in person before anything goes online, and save on shipping costs.
Side-by-side image. On the left, a man stands in front of an outdoor art festival booth on a sunny day. He wears a black bowler-style hat, sunglasses, a dark vest over a light shirt, brown pants, and boots. Framed landscape paintings are displayed behind him under a canopy tent. A small chalkboard sign beside the booth reads, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. — Picasso.”

On the right is a colorful promotional poster for the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival. The poster features a stylized city skyline, bright pink sunburst rays, and large yellow lettering reading “Arts & Music Festival.” Event details list May 17th, 11 AM–6 PM, on Washington Street, with a rain date of May 31st. Sponsor logos appear along the bottom.

This Saturday from 6 to 7, tune in for the return of The Mister Ferocious Radio Hour, a drop-in radio show for WFMU's Rock 'n Soul Radio stream. @laminda.bsky.social and I have prepared another exquisite playlist full of obscure crunchy rock and roll and cringey Euro trash. wfmu.org/rocknsoulradio
A square promotional image for The Mister Ferocious Radio Hour on WFMU Rock n Soul Radio. Large bold text at the top reads "THE MISTER FEROCIOUS RADIO HOUR" in dark red and gold lettering. Below the title, centered to the right, text reads "Saturday May 16, 6-7pm ET" followed by the WFMU Rock n Soul Radio logo in blue and the URL https://wfmu.org/rocknsoulradio.

The background is a composite image showing a cobblestone path, a white lighthouse with a red top on the left, a grassy hill with a brick building in the middle distance, and a partly cloudy sky. A flying saucer is visible in the upper right corner. The background has the appearance of a large sheet of paper or poster with torn and curling edges on the right side.

In the foreground, two adults pose with their faces through the cutouts of a face-in-hole photo board depicting two figures in dark historical folk costumes standing on cobblestones. The cutout on the left shows a black outfit with a dark cap; the one on the right shows a rust-colored top with a dark skirt and a close-fitting cap with a chin strap. Between and slightly in front of them, the board also features a child-sized cutout figure of an extraterrestrial with a large head, holding a decorative bag.

This was quite a challenge. One face in shadow, the other in direct sunlight. Overall I’m pleased with how this turned out. Glazed grisaille, acrylic on canvas, 14”x11”. More at art.monospace.com #art #artSky #fineArt #acrylic #grisaille #glazing #portraitPainting

A painted portrait on canvas depicting a child and their mother shown from the shoulders up, their faces close together and centered in the composition. The child, on the left, has short dark hair with bangs, dark eyes, and a slight smile, wearing a navy and yellow horizontal-striped shirt. The mother, on the right, has straight medium-brown hair parted in the middle and a serious, tender expression, wearing a dark jacket. The background is very dark, nearly black, with subtle warm tones toward the left. The painting is signed in the lower left corner with the artist’s signature. The canvas is propped on a light wood dresser with gray-painted drawer fronts, surrounded by several other partially visible canvases leaning against a wall or cabinet behind it.

M and M. Grisaille underpainting, work in progress. Think I’m getting the hang of this. Acrylic on canvas, 14”x11”. Check art.monospace.com for more.
A painting in progress on a wooden easel in an artist’s studio. The painting is a small-format grisaille portrait in black, white, and gray tones, depicting two figures — a child on the left and an adult on the right — posed close together and facing the viewer. The figures are rendered with loose, expressive brushwork against a near-black background, with highlights in white and light gray defining facial features and hair. A flexible-arm clip light is attached to the top of the easel. In the foreground, a white plastic palette holds mixed paints in black, brown, gray, and white. Surrounding the palette on a tan cloth-covered work surface are several paint tubes, a glass jar with brushes and tools, a palette knife, paint rags, and small bottles including a red-capped jar and a white squeeze bottle. The easel’s wooden surfaces are heavily stained with accumulated paint in multiple colors. In the background, shelves with books and art supplies are visible, softly out of focus.

Self portrait, acrylic on panel. 9”x12”. art.monospace.com
A portrait painting in progress displayed on a wooden tabletop easel in a cluttered artist’s studio. The painting depicts a middle-aged man with shoulder-length gray-brown hair and a mustache, wearing a dark jacket over a white shirt, set against a warm orange-yellow background. The painted panel is mounted on a larger piece of board that shows gestural brushwork in blues, oranges, reds, and greens extending beyond the edges of the panel. A clip-on lamp is attached to the top of the easel, and a tablet device is mounted to the right side. In the foreground is a white ceramic palette with smears of red, yellow, pink, and brown paint, a glass jar containing milky white liquid, and several acrylic paint bottles and tubes. The background shows a bookshelf, additional art supplies, and studio furniture in soft focus.

The grisaille after a night of refining. Really digging these open acrylics.
Alt text:
Monochrome painted portrait of an older man with a receding hairline and a full mustache, shown from the chest up against a neutral background. He wears a white shirt and dark jacket, with reading glasses hanging on a cord around his neck. The lighting emphasizes wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes, giving him a serious, contemplative expression. Visible brushstrokes and canvas texture add a traditional painted quality.

I liked how the portrait of my brother came out, so here is the grisaille for my next piece. I’m using slow-drying Golden Open acrylics to give myself time to get this underpainting just right. When I come back from Pittsburgh this weekend it should be dry enough to apply the glazes.
A studio work-in-progress photograph taken from above, showing a wooden easel mounted with a grisaille portrait painting in progress. The portrait depicts a man with shoulder-length dark hair and a mustache, rendered in blue-gray tones against a light background, wearing dark clothing. The painting is mounted on a wooden board that shows visible underpainting or earlier compositional marks in blue, red, yellow, and other hues around the portrait. In the foreground on a gray canvas drop cloth sits a ceramic palette with wet blue and gray paint, two tubes of Golden Open acrylic paint (visible “OPEN” labeling), a brush, and a second palette or paper surface with blue-gray paint marks. A black lamp extends from the upper left. The wooden work surface behind and surrounding the easel shows signs of heavy use, with paint marks, stains, and accumulated studio wear.

Wiendelt and me, acrylic on panel, 14”x11”. art.monospace.com
A warm-toned painting of two long-haired men, one in the foreground facing forward and the other slightly behind and to the right, leaning in at an angle. Their faces are rendered with expressive brushwork and strong highlights, dominated by reds, oranges, and yellows that suggest dramatic lighting. The background is a glowing orange gradient, enhancing the intensity of the scene. The foreground figure has a calm, direct expression, while the figure behind appears relaxed, with a faint smile and a casual posture, wearing a dark jacket. The overall mood is intimate and slightly theatrical, with bold color contrasts and a painterly texture.

A painting of two figures embracing on a dark urban sidewalk outside a bar at closing time. A third figure wearing a hat stands in the shadows of the entrance to the left. Storefronts are lit by interior light from the pub, a green sign partially reading “ERN” at upper left, and a red-and-white sign to the right. The palette is predominantly deep brown and black, punctuated by amber, red, and yellow-green from the signage and spilling light.

A few glazed grisaille nocturnes. I like how this technique works on urban night scenes. Will have to try some landscapes next. Acrylic on mdf panels, 11”x14”. #art #artSky #fineArt #acrylic #UnionCity #landscapeArt #urbanSketching #NewJersey art.monospace.com
A painting of a car wash facility at night. A large illuminated yellow sign reading “MARTIN CAR WASH” in red block letters spans the width of the building, lit from above by a row of white lights. Beneath the sign, a wide open bay reveals a brightly lit interior. A dark SUV is parked to the left; a white SUV is visible to the right. Two figures stand in the center of the bay, facing the interior. The wet forecourt reflects white light in streaks. The surrounding area is in deep shadow. A painting of an urban street corner at night. A large yellow traffic signal showing a red light hangs in the upper left. A three-story brick corner building occupies the center, its ground floor occupied by a commercial establishment with a red-lettered sign, partially legible, and illuminated storefront windows. Additional lit storefronts extend along the left side of the building. Overhead wires cross diagonally across the composition. Multiple traffic and street light fixtures glow yellow-green against the black sky. A white sedan and dark vehicles are parked along the curb in the foreground. A crosswalk is visible at lower center.A painting of a city street corner at night. A three-story brick building with decorative window surrounds and a dentilled cornice dominates the upper right. At street level, a small commercial structure with a bright red awning and white-lit display windows occupies the corner. A yellow traffic signal showing a red light hangs at upper left. Overhead wires cross the dark sky. Two dark SUVs are parked along the curb to the right; additional parked vehicles are visible at the far left. A wide intersection with white crosswalk markings occupies the foreground. A small tree is visible beside the corner building.Monochromatic underpainting for the previous painting. This so-called grisaille becomes the foundation for multiple thin layers of glazed transparent color. The process reminded me a lot of colorizing black and white photographs.

Thérèse Schwartze (1851–1918) was a highly sought-after Dutch portrait painter, on par with contemporaries like Sargent and Zorn. This self-portrait is made in pastel, her signature medium. Compare the smooth tactility of her face and the sketchy, almost scratchy background. tinyurl.com/bddjbr94
A bust-length self-portrait in pastel of a young person with voluminous, loosely curled brown hair swept upward. The subject wears round, wire-rimmed eyeglasses and faces the viewer with a slight turn, mouth closed. They are dressed in a dark garment at the neckline, fastened with a round brooch, and draped in a large, loosely wrapped shawl or scarf in bright yellow-gold. The background is dark and loosely rendered in deep blue, brown, and black tones with visible, gestural pastel strokes. The face is rendered with greater finish and detail than the surrounding areas. The work is executed in pastel with expressive, visible strokes throughout the clothing and background.

Teaneck Creek, Teaneck Creek Conservancy. Acrylic on panel, 12”x9” art.monospace.com #art #artSky #fineArt #acrylic #landscapeArt #Teaneck #NewJersey
A painting of a wooded wetland scene. Tall, dark-trunked trees rise vertically through the composition, their reflections visible in a shallow, still waterway that winds through the center and right of the picture plane. Dense low vegetation — rendered in mottled blue-greens, gray-greens, and white highlights suggesting leaf clusters or flowering plants — fills the foreground and middle ground on both sides of the water. The background opens into a sunlit clearing with bright yellow-green grasses or reeds, contrasting with the darker, shadowed interior of the woodland. Dappled light filters through the canopy, creating warm yellow-gold accents on tree bark and foliage. The canvas texture is visible throughout. The overall palette moves from deep shadow browns and cool greens in the foreground to luminous yellow-greens in the distance.

Teaneck Creek Nature Reserve, Bergen County, NJ. Acrylic on panel, 12”x9” Available at art.monospace.com #art #artSky #fineArt #acrylic #landscapeArt #Teaneck #NewJersey
A painting of a sunlit woodland scene in spring. A narrow dirt path winds from the lower left into the middle distance, bordered on both sides by dense clusters of small white flowers growing among lush green undergrowth. Two prominent trees with bare, dark branches rise in the center foreground, their trunks and upper branches contrasting against a pale blue sky with soft white clouds. To the left, a row of fuller, leafed-out trees forms a shaded edge. The middle distance opens into a bright green meadow, with a band of yellow flowers visible beyond a treeline in the background. The light is cool and bright, with strong contrasts between the shadowed path and the open field. The painting is signed in the lower right corner. The work is on canvas with visible texture throughout.
