But the story isn't over and the plot is just getting good! Last spring, the State Water Board agreed: a decision-making hearing about DWP water diversions is necessary, this year. And after a summer of workshops highlighting the Mono Basin's threatened resources, momentum is building for Mono Lake.

Today is Mono Lake Day, the anniversary of the California State Water Resources Control Board's decision in 1994 mandating that Mono Lake be protected at a healthy level of 6,392 feet above sea level. The lake is still ten feet too low and long overdue in reaching the healthy level.

Views from the top of the watershed! 🌄 The Mono Basin landscape shows evidence of glaciation that carved U-shaped canyons along the eastern slope of the Sierra. Dana and Kidney Lakes get their colors from glacial silt in the water, which creates striking shades of blue. 📷 Brendan Peralez

The LA Times covered last week's State Water Board meeting, where the board heard several key messages: 1. DWP water diversions are the primary cause of #MonoLake's low level. 2. Reducing those diversions will boost the lake's rise, even in the era of climate change. www.latimes.com/environment/...

Yesterday, the UCLA Center for Climate Science presented its new report to the State Water Board. One key takeaway: LADWP water diversions are the primary cause of today’s dangerously low level of #MonoLake. Another: Reducing those diversions will boost lake rise, even in the era of climate change.
