Cora Stuhrmann @monoclemind.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I think that this effect is due to the promotion and/or controversy, not the book itself. The talks and articles Wilson gave in between 1975 and 1978 additionally contributed to SB being discussed in different disciplines, but again, not so much due to the content of book itself! 110

Cora Stuhrmann @monoclemind.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I don't know if the main text of Sociobiology was really written with a lay reader in mind, it functions more as a textbook to work through than as an exposition of evolutionary thought. Though it was certainly promoted as a readable entry point, I am not sure it actually was! 100

Cora Stuhrmann @monoclemind.bsky.social · 18/02/2026Beginning in the 1960s, philosophers of biology increasingly sought to clarify these inner-biological gaps, while also contributing to broader debates on determinism and reductionism shaping biology at the time. Now it's time for historians to analyze these debates and disciplinary developments! 3/3 220
Cora Stuhrmann @monoclemind.bsky.social · 18/02/2026It also adds another layer of explanation because these sub disciplines are in a somewhat conscious competition for recognition (Think DNA versus Darwin in images), funding and also terminological authority (Who does get to define a gene: molecular geneticist or evolutionary theorists?) 2/3 130
Cora Stuhrmann @monoclemind.bsky.social · 18/02/2026It helps to think of biology as a set of subdisciplines rather than one coherent discipline. This explains gaps in conceptual unity and the lack of established communication channels to solve them. 1/3 130
