I'm a pixel cat who enjoys a variety of video games (though often non-mainstream) on PC and PS4 as well as animes, western animation, movies, music, art, and other things. I'm not big on physical activities, though I enjoy the odd walk through the park.

First time I'd heard of this. In general, assume the info hasn't reached all the ears it should have. That said, when concerned with privacy, it *is* a bit contradictory to have to give so much info to have a voice -- even if it's understandable.

the last picnic of the year
Digital illustration of a line of ants all carrying bits of food.
From left to right: Carrying a smaller ant and an iced gem, a cube of cheese with a cocktail stick, a sausage with another ant sleeping on top, Two ants carrying a large strawberry, the first one is being squished, two ants carrying a large crisp, a jumping ant carrying a blueberry, two ants carrying a cola bottle sweet, two ants carrying cherries on a stem and a final ant carrying a seed.

I like what Black Tabby is doing and the post scared me that if this line of thought was taken too far, we'd get crusty games full of spite for the player. If they do that knowingly, then I'll be disappointed, but at least they did it knowing they were excluding some players.

Well, since you know, just understand that I was defending that side of gaming. The original post I replied to seemed a bit too focused on countering players who can't help but reload. I just wanted to make it clear it's not a fatality.

On "taking the loss" feeling like cheating: all I can say is that not all players think like that. Some players can enjoy games with dicerolls and failures with consequences and won't reload. It's a mindset. For me, it comes from trusting the game to still make things *interesting*.

Moni le Nyan @monilenyan.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
My point on this line is... uncertain. Part of me thinks "they should just be honest" but I know deep-seated mental blocks are a pain. Games removing the temptation help these players stay honest. It's just sad that it removes options for the honest players.

I've also seen players admit that they have no self-control. If you give them reload or optional permadeath, they won't have the willpower to inflict it to themselves, and yet they crave the frustration that comes from it. I'll let therapists debate the "why" of this contradiction.

This and previous 2 posts: Fully agreed. There's a lot of unconscious "lying to oneself" happening in there. A lot of pride, a lot of competitivity. Clearly, a lot of players want the fruit without the effort and will still brag.

In games that are purely about gameplay, there's no filter much anymore. The player might not feel the death of their avatar, but they're definitely going through the frustration of any pushback. And yes, some players love the frustration. And some games are strictly focused on this, all good!

Moni le Nyan @monilenyan.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
In interactive fiction (tabletop rpgs, video games w stories), there's still detachment but less so because the player goes through a lot of actual activities and live an amount of frustration directly. To me, this means you can't directly compare, but there's overlap, sure.

I'll reply to individual bits, don't take any post as my global opinion on the whole topic, okay? ;) "how entertainment works" I'd agree with "how passive fiction works". Movies, books, etc... viewer is detached enough from characters that their frustration is not felt 100%.

For extra consideration, I suffer from chronic anxiety which, when it strikes, severely limits my brain and reflexes and endurance. I usually have to switch to different games, but I strongly appreciate those where I can start a parallel playthrough on easy. Permadeath games are just out.

Not always. With that line of thought, all players use the easiest difficulty, always use a walkthrough and activate every cheat available. Simply not a global truth. Trust the players to simply seek the level of challenge they feel up to at a given time.

And of course, the ability to reload still saves many games/playthroughs because bugs, crashes, power outage, bad "gotcha!" design, etc...

Opt-out iron man then? Because otherwise there's a loss of comfort that will only appeal to hardcore players I think. Of note, there's games with no iron man mode that I've played in a no-reloads spirit. But only when I feel I can trust the game. I don't trust most games with iron man mode 😅

Also, I don't get the same feeling from other items even though they're not really the same scale either. I think it’s because all others are one single Thing taking all the space.

Moni le Nyan @monilenyan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Just something this makes me realize: the bread and slices, because it needs to fit the same pixel space as other items, looks much smaller than everything else. Can't tell if it's a flaw or just the nature of fixed NxN dimensions 🤔

A happy little fox tries on an oversized purple witch hat, getting ready for spooky month. Tiny ghost friends float nearby to cheer them on, while a bright pumpkin joins the Halloween prep. The hat may be a little too big, but the fox looks more than ready!
