A Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum), photographed in Costa Rica.

With its subtle olive-green plumage, dark wings and distinctive pale markings, the Palm Tanager may not be the most brightly coloured tanager, but it has a beautiful and elegant appearance. It is a common sight in Costa Rica, often seen moving through trees and palms in search of fruit and insects.

Another beautiful encounter with the diverse birdlife of Costa Rica.

This is the Yigüirro (Clay-colored Thrush), the official national bird of Costa Rica! It might look modest with its clay-colored feathers, but its beautiful singing is famous for announcing the arrival of the green rainy season.

A Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), perched high above the landscape of Consdorf, Luxembourg. Sitting on a bare branch, it calmly watches its surroundings, always ready to spring into action at the first sign of prey.

I love the simplicity of this image. The Kestrel’s elegant shape, sharp gaze, and the clean, uncluttered background really make the bird stand out.

A Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), beautifully captured in flight above Consdorf, Luxembourg, with its prey firmly held in its talons.

The Common Kestrel is best known as a hunter of small mammals, such as mice and voles. This photo beautifully captures the moment as the bird carries its prey through the air.

A remarkable moment: the elegant flight of the Kestrel combined with the raw and untamed side of nature.

Europe’s smallest bird — and Luxembourg’s national bird.

The Goldcrest (Regulus regulus), photographed near Consdorf, Luxembourg.

At barely 9 cm long and weighing only around 5 grams, this tiny bird is a true lightweight. Always on the move among the spruce branches, searching for tiny insects.

That makes it even more special to photograph it here in Luxembourg — the country where the Goldcrest holds the title of national bird.

A tiny bird, but with a special place in Luxembourg’s natural heritage.

A beautiful Long-tailed Sibia (Heterophasia picaoides) in the lush surroundings of Fraser’s Hill. This species immediately stands out with its strikingly long tail, white wing patch, and deep red eyes. Fraser’s Hill is also a well-known location for photographing this species.

A little jewel from Monteverde (Lesser Violetear), Costa Rica

This colorful hummingbird hovers in mid-air as it feeds on nectar from the bright red flowers. The combination of the bird’s iridescent green and blue plumage, the red flowers, and the soft background makes this, for me, a quintessential image of the Monteverde cloud forest.

Hummingbirds are abundant here, and their speed and constant movement make them quite challenging to photograph.

A living jewel of the cloud forest.

This juvenile Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), likely a young male, already displays the extraordinary colors that have made this species one of the most iconic birds of Central America. Although it has not yet developed the spectacular elongated tail streamers of a fully adult male, the shimmering emerald-green plumage, deep crimson underparts, and soft juvenile feathering clearly reveal a bird that is still growing into its magnificent adult appearance.

Resplendent Quetzals inhabit the humid mountain forests of Central America, where they feed primarily on fruits, along with insects and other small prey. Remarkably, their brilliant colors can blend surprisingly well into the filtered light of the canopy, where moss, leaves, and shadows merge into a constantly shifting mosaic of green.

Juvenile quetzals are encountered and photographed far less often than the famous long-tailed adult males. That made this sighting especially memorable — a rare glimpse of a young bird at the beginning of what will become one of the most spectacular transformations in the avian world.

Perched quietly on a moss-covered branch, the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus) seems almost unreal. Its glossy black plumage, fiery red eye, and extraordinary tail streamers ending in delicate racket-shaped feathers make it one of the most distinctive birds of Southeast Asia.

The Rufous-backed Kingfisher (Ceyx rufidorsa) may be small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of a hand, but its brilliant colors make it impossible to overlook. The glowing rufous back, golden-yellow underparts, and vivid red bill create one of the most striking combinations found among Southeast Asian kingfishers.

Unlike many kingfishers that stay close to open water, this species often hunts quietly in the shaded forest understory, searching for insects, small crustaceans, and other tiny prey among streams and damp vegetation.

Seeing such an intensely colored bird perched so calmly in the forest is a reminder that some of nature’s most spectacular treasures come in the smallest packages.

The Eurasian Magpie (Pica pica) is far more colorful than its familiar black-and-white appearance suggests. In the right light, its feathers reveal beautiful iridescent shades of blue, turquoise, and violet, creating a striking contrast against the soft winter snow.

This Black-thighed Falconet (Microhierax fringillarius) had just caught a bird in mid-flight — a prey item almost the same size as the falconet itself. Moments like this are a powerful reminder that size means very little when speed, precision, and determination come together.

The photo is not perfectly sharp, shot at ISO 18000, 250 mm, 1/2500 sec at f/5.6, but for me the value of the image lies in the behavior it captures. Seeing one of the world’s smallest falcons successfully take down prey matching its own size was an unforgettable moment.

A Black-thighed Falconet (Microhierax fringillarius) sits alert in front of the entrance to its tree-cavity nest. Although it is one of the smallest falcons in Southeast Asia, this remarkable little raptor is a fearless and highly efficient hunter, capable of catching insects, dragonflies, and even small birds in rapid aerial pursuits.

The Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) is one of the world's most adaptable birds. Equally at home in forests, farmland, and busy cities, it feeds on insects, fruit, seeds, and even small reptiles. Its sharp eyesight and curious nature make it an efficient forager, often seen walking confidently across open ground in search of its next meal.

Although admired for its intelligence and ability to mimic sounds, the Common Myna has also become one of the world's most successful invasive bird species after being introduced far beyond its native range.
