HBO. It fits well within this range of options. Very different than Ted Lasso but reminds me of it many ways. (Funny but also can be dark and really shows people growing, struggling and getting better.) Also Shrinking on Apple TV

It may literally be simply because of how close it was - easy to see that Nader voters could have actually made a difference in Florida to a degree that's not as clear in subsequent elections

I guess that makes sense. But I still think it would be easier to explain a *bigger* swing due to ICE blowback.

That's true & good point. I guess the diff to me is: even low-paying jobs you still have to find, but it's so easy to start doing Uber tomorrow. It's just something I've been wondering about, whether it has affected unemployment being lower than gen sentiments. Glad to know there's no evidence

moneil.bsky.social @moneil.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
But what fraction of unemployed, is it? I have been wondering if the very low barriers to entry to driving for Uber (even lower for DoorDash, etc), has been absorbing the unemployed? Anecdotally, i definitely know people who turned to Uber after a layoff while they were looking for better work

It's also something that is relatively much cheaper than before - due to increase in supply

I am fairly confident it is! When I was growing up, taking a taxi was almost unheard of and fully limited to core major cities. Now, Uber is common in all sorts of places.

But there are ao many more Uber drivers than taxi drivers! I know anecdote is not data but I know multiple people who drive Uber because they are searching for employment

I've been wondering about the gig economy's impact on unemployment. That's shocking to me that it has been steady!

Claude Opus does this well for me. It's my primary use of AI. I don't think I'll ever do another PPT deck in my life.

For a lot of people, covid was actually the most financial stability they'd ever had - with the child tax credits, enhanced UI, throw in a couple stimulus checks. Going back to "normal" also meant going back to more financial stress

Where I get tripped up on this: hearing how all the ads are "Talarico is for 'they/them', I think the Dem consultant class would be much more likely to interpret a Talarico loss as evidence he didn't do a big enough turn on trans rights than to believe he shouldn't have equivicated on them

The problem I have with "listen to x community" is that it presumes a monolith and/or that the loudest, most aggressive voices are the most representative. I do actually think any "ally" SHOULD LISTEN to many voices from a particular community to learn. But ultimately ...

Yeah, it was bad, but not what the headline says - there's no "endorsement", not least because there's no PA Senate seat up this cycle.

I didn't get it either initially, but I think she's highlighting the reverse correlation - because fewer people are having a glass of wine nightly, they are feeling more anxious

Apparently - very weirdly & unexpectedly - Stephen Miller is someone other Trump administration staff like to work with? I heard this on a podcast from a 1st term Trump staffer who gave this as 1 reason for his staying power & influence even tho he doesn't really seem "Trump's type"

I know enough not to expect consistency from 'conservative" justices but as a child of the 80s/90s, I find it so confusing - all we used to hear from the right was criticism of the Court's "legislating from the bench". Is there any good source tracing that shift?

For what it's worth! (My biggest frustration with social media in all this was how little the US covid policies were celebrated - in fact, just the opposite.)

Unfortunately, Biden's economic policies that were finally starting to turn the tide may have felt like "too little, too late" ESPECIALLY when combined with the negativity and tribalism of social media AND the fact that the Covid response gave many a taste of truly transformative policy.

I didn't realize that, interesting. That would definitely counter my, admittedly, idiosyncratic theory. Although there could be lots of things going on - the higher income composition could be driven by partisan (ie, anti-Biden) sentiments in '21.

I do wonder if the enhanced unemployment and child tax credits affected future sentiments. While they were minimized in the Twitterverse, they were transformative for many - albeit briefly. A lot of people suddenly tasted what a less precarious life could be like.

Having lived in both, I think there are *some* ways DC is worse: 1) The WORST weather is 35 degrees and pouring rain. Give 20 and snow any day. 2) Chicagoans are very realistic and prepared for the weather. Dressing properly makes a huge difference!

Yes, absolutely. That's why it's important to fight for structural reforms for the next several election cycles. Defeating Trump is not enough, but it is a first step and letting the fascists win is not inevitable. It will be contested terrain for decades to come
