I just finished the first playable version of Chapter 2! The first 2 of my 6 chapters are now completely playable, with a total playtime of around 2–3 hours. Now it’s time for playtesting!

Funny little bug I just discovered while doing a walkthrough of Chapter 2: due to a typo, I now have to click an item 45 times to reach the actual object.

I fixed a game-breaking bug today. After adding dialogue positions for my NPCs, I completely forgot to save them with the game state. This caused loading a savegame to sometimes result in unreachable dialogue positions. Another reminder that every new feature has to work with the save system too.

Making big steps towards getting Chapter 2 playthrough-ready! The final showdown scene is still unfinished, but everything else is almost complete. Hopefully, it will be ready for playtesting soon!

I finished drawing the last scene in the Obersalzberg. Will the Codex be hidden in one of these chests?

Writing dialogue these days. It’s harder than I thought to convey each character’s personality through words alone.

Working on the project is hard these days. I have a lot of stuff to do and I’ll be going on vacation soon. I managed to work on Chapter 2 a bit yesterday. Added some new items and puzzles. It’s moving forward, just slowly.

I had less than 30 minutes to work on my game today, but I still managed to fix three bugs. Found the cause, tracked them down, and fixed them. It feels good to make progress, even on busy days.

Spent almost an hour arguing with my doors because they refused to close with an animation. Eventually, they listened.

Hi there! I'm trying to find enough time to keep developing my game, but real life keeps throwing new quests my way, like: Use dirty clothes with washing machine.

Today I built a combination lock for the scene I'm currently working on. Now I just have to come up with a good way to hide the combination.

I just received the first draft of the mouse cursor icons from my graphic designer. Do you immediately recognize what each icon is supposed to mean?

Today's plan: - Add support for playing animations backwards - Add support for starting character animations from frame 0 - Build a combination lock mini-game

I just added custom item areas for hovering and clicking. Objects are no longer limited by their sprite rectangles, so I can define interaction areas in any shape I want (e.g. a chair). What a game changer!

Somehow, adding features is easier than adding new story sections. I added a dialogue location that the character automatically walks to before a dialogue starts. A bit bufixing, and my gameDev time for today is over. At this rate, I'll never finish.

I don't know how many hours I just worked on this particular door-animation. 3 more to go. I hope you like it!

My cat is a Mexico fan too (currently watching the World Cup opening ceremony). Should I give him a cameo in my game? 😸

I’m writing my first shader these days. I want to create dark scenes that players can explore with a flashlight. I just wish I had more time to work on the game and make progress faster!

From sketch to final scene. Everything made by hand (and Procreate). 0% AI. Criticism welcome.

I’m currently trying to draw my own backgrounds. This would be the first scene in Freiburg. I’ll probably redo it at some point, but it already shows the style I’m aiming for.

I’m finally starting work on the second part of Chapter 2. Only four final scenes left to build, including one or two pretty exciting developments. I look forward to present it to my playtesters.

I had a lot of work last week, but today I could continue working on the game: I wrote a new dialogue that explains the main character’s motivation to go on this journey. And I fixed a chain of nasty bugs!

I will be presenting my game next week at OpenStage in Stuttgart. I’m quite nervous about it.

I added automatic dialogue progression. Dialogue nodes now advance automatically after a delay, and the dialogue closes itself after 3 s. It reduces the amount of clicking, but you might miss something. Would you keep this optional, use generous timings, or is this feature not that important at all?

Small dev update: Started working on Chapter 2 with new puzzles and dialogues. Also added invisible hotspots to make scenes more interactive, and finally implemented persistent settings. Slowly starting to feel like a real game.

After 5 months of engine work and migrating my adventure game scene by scene to LibGDX, today I finally got back to content creation. Designed two brand-new locations with dialogues, quests and puzzles. Feels great to move forward again!

Chapter 1 is ready for playtesting. Friends and family are my first group of playtesters. Let’s see how much I’ll have to fix after that.

A small story sneak peek from my adventure game. Did I get you interested?
An old stone tablet with a writing:
It was one of those golden autumn days that make Freiburg look magical.
For most of my fellow students, it was just a normal afternoon.
Maybe they were already thinking about the weekend parties.

For me, it was the day everything began.

At the time, I had no idea that this day would set me on a trail —
from an old manuscript halfway across the globe to the gates of the Mayan underworld.

A discovery that might have been better left hidden.

I built a version for playtesting and gave it to my brother, who had some time today. But a bug that only appears in the build crashed the game...

I got the new game menu from my graphic designer today. It finally replaces my placeholder UI. I really like it and can't wait to see it in action!

After valuable feedback I added a double-click fast-run feature today. Players who prefer a faster pace can now move through scenes more quickly. It feels good and looks great! Would you use it?

This is the devlog for The 5th Maya Codex. Inspired by Monkey Island & Broken Sword, I’m building a story-driven point & click adventure, solo, in my spare time. I’ll share progress, puzzles and setbacks as I go. I hope you'll join me!
