Everyone's blaming "school choice" for Miami-Dade's shrinking enrollment. But nobody's asking why Florida can't even keep young families here to begin with. moms4libros.substack.com/p/why-are-ou...

Erika Donalds says school choice is about parents. We followed the donors, the disclosures, and the audit instead. $183K unreported. A school that never opened. $270M unaccounted for. And millions for donors who push "school choice." Full investigation: moms4libros.substack.com/p/follow-the...

Public schools operate under a 1,300+ page code — audited finances, curriculum standards, achievement data, all public record. Rules for private schools taking that same public money? "Fit on an index card," per WV Board President Paul Hardesty.

This isn't just a Florida problem. ProPublica found 1,500+ new private schools across 13 states in five years — over 9,600 total. States allocated $10.6 BILLION to these programs last year, up 29%.

Then there's Lisa Helton — formerly Lisa Hamm, the Cincinnati charter superintendent indicted on 26 felony counts for looting public funds. She changed her name, moved to Tampa, opened a school. It's collected $291K in FL scholarship money since.

Florida only acted once that post went viral, and even then just pulled $150 in curriculum funds. The school is still open, still enrolling, still charging $12K tuition.

Tara Salute lost her teaching license after sexual abuse of a minor. Last fall she opened Crystal River Learning Academy. It took a retired detective posting on Facebook — not the state — to surface her record.

Moms For Libros @moms4libros.org · 22/07/2026
Florida law says it plainly: the state has no jurisdiction over private schools — not who runs them, what they teach, or your kid's safety. "Educational freedom" means freedom from accountability, for the school, not the parent.

Florida stripped a teacher's license for sexually abusing a 16-year-old. Last year she opened a private school there — with ease. New @propublica investigation on vouchers and zero state oversight. 🧵
