Time to start posting from my Women in STEM series again! No.50: Edith Clements #WomeninSTEM #diversityinSTEM #womensempowerment #botany #ecology

Edith Clements (1874-1971) was an American botanist and ecologist. She earned her Ph.D. in botany from the University of Nebraska in 1904, becoming the first woman to do so. Alongside her husband, Frederic Clements, she made significant contributions to botanical ecology, particularly in plant succession. Despite her achievements, Clements faced significant sexism, with her work often overshadowed by her husband's. Nevertheless, she persevered and became a respected figure in her field. Clements collected and classified over 530 plant specimens from the Colorado mountains, supplemented by 100 photographs. She co-founded the Alpine Laboratory at Pikes Peak, Colorado, a significant center for ecological research. Clements was also an influential educator, inspiring many students in botany. Her contributions to science earned her honors, including election to the Ecological Society of America and several honorary degrees.

These shots were from an early morning on a cloudy day after a rainy night. The aperture is wide open and shutter speed is super slow. The result is an intentional blur that gives a ghost-like feel. I call them ghost birds. #experimentalphoto #intentionalblur #bluejay #artphotos #backyardbirds
