I think if you want a demo of the mechanics of how AI doom-hype detracts from the climate push, listen to this Al Gore interview w/ @heatmap.news, where he dismisses the climate impacts (using a spurious comparison, imo) but treats the chatbot doom as serious and real heatmap.news/podcast/shif...

The Data Center Backlash Should Also Be a Climate Reckoning. It Isn’t Yet
Climate groups are latching onto the data center opposition movement, but it remains to be seen if they can get people to care about the facilities’ impact on the atmosphere.

i did a little Climate Week postmortem on data centers: co2 emissions are far & away the most alarming part of the buildout. but there hasn't been much of a reckoning beyond climate spaces kind of wondering when it'll enter the larger convo, if at all, and what that may look like

yeah this is a great point! i genuinely am just trying to approach dc and energy development from as fair a perspective as possible (i liked some writing from jane flegal on this for ex) even though flexibility in theory is often really far from how flexibility is executed on the ground

@mollytaft.com also highlights that for all the noise and heat from progressive circles on data centres, climate is not a high priority within the 'environment' subcategory. locals are looking at air pollution, water etc. Social media's similar. Leaves whoever's left in the climate space to care

A Crusoe (fossil fuel company powering data centres) claimed no protesters at NY climate wk live near a data centre - but as @mollytaft.com points out, why is that relevant when climate impacts *everyone* *everywhere*? We *all* live near data centres, in that regard www.wired.com/story/data-c...
A day before the panel, at a different briefing, I watched BloombergNEF analysts talk about the group’s projections of a massive new influx of demand for fossil fuel power over the coming years, driven primarily by data centers. Data centers, according to BNEF’s analysis, will likely comprise more than 5 percent of global electricity demand by 2035, tripling their needs now. The majority of that demand will be met by new and existing natural gas plants, and could raise the power sector’s emissions by 6 percent in less than 10 years.
That doesn’t even account for gas power plants being built off the grid to service data centers. A separate BNEF analysis of 99 proposed on-site gas power plants found that they could increase US power sector emissions by 20 to 33 percent if they’re all built, posing a major climate threat. Declines in emissions from coal plant retirements will be more than offset by new gas emissions, and more coal plants are staying online thanks to the new demand.
Even if data centers pull off the PR turnaround of the century and ease concerns about water use and energy bills, the fossil fuel buildout still looms as one of the biggest consequences of their buildout. Extinction Rebellion may, at the end of the day, be right: all those added emissions mean that even those of us who aren’t living near data centers will end up feeling their impacts.

part of the reason the post-covid propaganda worked on some parts of the left is because the DNA wasn't totally foreign, if you get my drift

i think the slippery thing about the antivax stuff is that a lot of the pre-covid origins of the movement were situated in traditionally "liberal" or "left" spaces — rfk jr helped cofound EcoWatch, for ex, and a lot of early antivax ppl came from crunchy enviro world

The AI ‘Slowdown’ Is an Antitrust Mess

But on the other are organizers and experts who assert that AI is already harming people--through things like surveillance, data centers, and algorithmic bias--and that these issues should be front and center, rather than potential future issues.

yeah that's certainly a working theory of mine as well. i think one of the reasons this issue is so fascinating from a midterms perspective is that there's a bunch of stuff all tangled up together that no one has quite figured out how to parse or figure out just how far it will stretch

like i think if your kneejerk response to any sort of ai discussion is "fuck ai" — sure! but what do you do about regulation of something that is increasingly the bedrock of like literally every business
1272
molly taft @mollytaft.com · 04/09/2026
i also worry that some people's blanket refusal to engage with "ai" as a concept or to acknowledge that these systems are getting more powerful in some way is making them ignore something that increasingly is crying out for regulation
