Mississippi still burning. 🤚🏽 www.washingtoninformer.com/nolan-wells-...
Mississippi by Charles White, 1972, oil wash on board, 59 13/16 x 47 1/4 in.

An inverted compass is positioned around the central figure who is wrapped in a wool blanket, sitting still in Mississippi, a visual pun on the symbolism and significance of the north in Black History. Before the Civil War, the North was equated to freedom from slavery, and in later years it was associated with economic prosperity as many Black southerners migrated north for the promise of freedom and livelihood. This story is personal for White, as his mother moved from Mississippi to Chicago in 1914. The inversion of the poles symbolizes the significance of Mississippi, its barren commitment to racism and the centrality of the South in the civil rights movement.

You’re not forgotten. #OTD
A beautiful young Black man named Eric Garner, known peacemaker in his community, sits for his senior portrait in a tux. Scruffed face n quarter smile in a fade, he goes on to marry his childhood sweetheart, Esaw Snipes with whom he would have six children.

Eric had worked as a mechanic, a bouncer and a horticulturist for the New York Department of Parks and Recreation but he had asthma and had to quit his horticulturist job due to health reasons.

Deuteronomy 32:35 sounds off in the background.

What. Team Young Whoopi running it back in a limited run.

*In 1984, up-and-coming monologist Whoopi Goldberg premiered her one-woman show on Broadway, torching the rulebook of traditional solo performance in one of the most electrifying debuts of the era. Now, the trailblazing work returns—but for a new generation. Emmy® Award-winning producer, actor and filmmaker Kerry Washington (American Son, Scandal), and Tony® Award winner Kara Young (Purpose, Purlie Victorious) lead a remarkable ensemble of 5 women in bringing Goldberg’s unforgettable characters back to the stage, in this new production directed by Tony® Award nominee Whitney White. Funny, vivid, and deeply human, these nuanced portraits feel as fresh and irresistible today as they were over 40 years ago*

Harriet Powers pictorial quilt, circa 1898.

According to family history, Reverend Charles Cuthbert Hall received this quilt as a gift from a group of “faculty ladies” at Atlanta University in 1898. As Hall had recently become president of the Union Seminary in New York, the women may have commissioned or purchased the quilt from Harriet Powers as a tribute to his achievement. They also wished to thank Hall for his support of Atlanta University, founded in 1865 by the American Missionary Association to educate African Americans.

This quilt’s Old and New Testament scenes made it an appropriate gift for a Presbyterian minister. Harriet Powers also depicted four stories of natural phenomena and a morality lesson. Many of the events occurred before her birth. Powers’s inclusion of these non-Biblical stories attests to their lasting importance to the artist and her community.

DESCRIPTION
Appliqué quilt, dyed and printed cotton fabrics applied to cotton. The quilt is divided into fifteen pictorial rectangles. Worked with pieces of beige, pink, mauve, orange, dark red, gray-green and shades of blue cotton.

This extraordinary quilt was created by Harriet Powers, an African American woman who was born into slavery in Clarke County, Georgia on October 29,1837. This quilt (together with Powers's descriptions and small portrait photograph) was presented by a group of "faculty ladies" at Atlanta University to a trustee by 1898. Powers had created a similar quilt around 1886, which had been exhibited at the Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta in 1895.

The following are Powers' descriptions of all fifteen blocks starting in the upper left and moving to the right.

FIRST ROW:

1. Job praying for his enemies. Job crosses. Job's coffin.

2. The dark day of May 19, 1780. The seven stars were seen 12 N. in the day. The cattle wall went to bed, chickens to roost and the trumpet was blown. The sun went off to a small spot and then to darkness.

3. The serpent lifted up by Moses…

Harriet Powers’ pictorial quilt detail, second/middle row - panel 8, cotton plain weave, pieced, appliquéd, embroidered, and quilted circa 1898, 105 x 69in., Permanent Collection of MFA Boston.

In her words:

“The falling of the stars on Nov. 13, 1833. The people were frightened and thought that the end had come. God's hand staid the stars. The varmints rushed out of their beds.”
