IOWA! 📣 Lawmakers intentionally eroded child labor protections to be weaker than federal law. Now, new data show Iowa employers accounted for nearly 10% of federal child labor violations nationwide, even though Iowa has only 1% of the US population. 1/3

Last week, Sentient released a new GIS map of all 10,830 factory farms in Iowa. This Friday, join Sentient’s Julian Nowogrodzki, John McCracken and Jenny Splitter as they explain how residents and journalists can use the map to understand the flow of manure through the state. RSVP: buff.ly/u7PM4Yt

We need him in Iowa. JD tried, but he lacked the rizz.

I suspect that especially the Iowa House is going to look radically different come January. Not only getting a few real firebrands elected but more moderate incumbents reading the room.

Jones and many statehouse candidates are running wo the benefit (/s) of Dem consultants in races that looked like kamikaze missions as recently as the June 2 primary.

Also, office sought. In Iowa at least, there's a pretty significant gulf between the moderates running for federal office and governor than the vibe from statehouse candidates, to say nothing of Chris Jones for AG Sec.

Kidding aside, enjoy it! Wyoming smoked. Denver somehow converted back-to-back 2 point conversions. Iowa had one that's going in the Top 10 of KF. What a weekend for football.

Fun fact! My grandparents place in Lone Tree was the site of the first steel foundry west of the Mississippi (maybe excepting California), Zimmerman Monarch. In 1915 they relocated to Burlington to be on the river. After 111 years of M&A, they're still a going concern, now known as Niagra LaSalle.

I think Google got it mostly right, probably because they did it ten years ago. I've been using a Voice number for... 18? years now and it's been interesting seeing how it mixes with Google Fi (not well).

I get the ring a beat after you've called and announced, so I pick up to an automated prompt, "Call from, [voice of caller]" and hit 1 to answer and 2 to send to VM.

Jon Green @modestholdings.com · 28/09/2026
It sounds like the implementation is different with Apple. The way Voice works, is if you call me and I don't have you as a contact, you get a prompt to introduce yourself.

Jon Green @modestholdings.com · 28/09/2026
Google has been offering a version of this for a decade with Voice, and voicemail transcription even longer than that. I, for one, appreciate it, even if it's a response to a pretty ugly regulatory failure.

We can go round and round, at the end of the day if AOC mounts a presidential bid I'll squeak with glee. I know she understands the importance of the Lege, I just don't want the rest of us to lose sight of it.

Jon Green @modestholdings.com · 28/09/2026
I agree completely with you (concentration of power in the president) and that's precisely why I think caring as much about Congress is vital. We've got to restore power to the Congress, and any willing president, itself a tall order, is going to need a partner.

Jon Green @modestholdings.com · 28/09/2026
To John Wilson's point that we both responded to, I agree a Senator (or MoC/House) could be a good president. Experience as a MoC is useful, same as executive experience such as Gov. I worry, though, that we're too focused on president. It's going to take a muscular Congress to unstick this mess.

Jon Green @modestholdings.com · 28/09/2026
Probably someone not currently on our radar, but if you pushed me, Pritzker. He's got executive experience, Fuck You money and has seemed steadfastly good.

Jon Green @modestholdings.com · 28/09/2026
I agree, but that analysis doesn't require the someone to be AOC. We need folks willing to put in the time in the Congress.

I think most folks are severely underindexing on "where she'd do great." Congress is going to need to get its shit together long term, and we're going to need lions to do it. Barrasso and Grassley and Thune are as responsible for the mess we're in as anyone.
