Watching BACKROOMS with subtitles on, I was tickled to note that they subtitled this scene by having Bastian scream, "Don't Die!" instead of "Moonchild!" out the window!
A clip from the movie BACKROOMS: three people sitting on a living sofa, watching tv. The scene on the tv is a clip from the movie THE NEVERENDING STORY, wherein the central character Bastian is screaming out a new name for the childlike empress.

The subtitle here reads as follows:

BOY (ON TV):
Don’t Die!

The book is called END TIMES FASCISM. It’s a great Halloween book because it’s scary as hell, but also true, which makes it even scarier. You should read it.

For Jews wrestling w/their cultural identities who feel misaligned w/Israel politically, I highly recommend the new non-fiction book HERE WHERE WE LIVE IS OUR COUNTRY by Molly Crabapple. It explores the story of the socialist anti-Zionist Jewish Bund from the pogroms thru WWII. (See Alt for more)
THE STORY OF THE JEWISH BUND
-
HERE WHERE WE LIVE IS OUR COUNTRY
-
CO-AUTHOR OF BROTHERS OF THE GUN
-
MOLLY CRABAPPLE

From the book description:

“In the aftermath of the Holocaust, Sam Rothbort created “memory paintings” with the hope of resurrecting the vanished world of his shtetl childhood. Decades later, his great-granddaughter, the award-winning artist Molly Crabapple, discovered these paintings and one stood out: a girl, her dress the color of sky, hurling a rock through a cottage window. Itka the Bundist, Breaking Windows.

Itka is how Crabapple met the Jewish Labor Bund. Once the most influential Jewish political force in eastern Europe, the Bund was secular, socialist, and uncompromisingly anti-Zionist. The Bundists fought for dignity and equality, not in an imagined homeland in Palestine but “here where we live.”

In the first popular history of the Bund, Crabapple re-creates their extraordinary world through dramatic portraits of insurgent poets and antireligious rebels, clandestine revolutionaries and lovers on the barricades. The Bundists live deeply within this violent, volatile, and somehow hopeful period, as their stories interweave with the Russian Revolution and the Holocaust. The Bund’s rise and fall raises the vital question: What can we learn from a movement that, for all its toughness, imagination, and moral clarity, was largely destroyed?

Here Where We Live Is Our Country reanimates a band of idealists who broadened our global political imagination. As we once again contend with nationalism, repression, and the struggle for belonging, the Bund’s remarkable story and message—that liberation, dignity, and solidarity must begin where we stand—reaches across time as a guide to our own urgent moment.”

Cont.
- The senator is a swing vote. This is where it’s particularly counterproductive for you to make out of district/state phone calls. If a Senator is on the fence on an issue, it means they are going to weight the views of their constituents even more heavily than they usually would. But to do that, they have to be able to hear from their own constituents. They can’t do that if out-of-state callers are jamming phone lines or making staff think that opposition is coming strictly from out-of-state and not in-state.

- The MoC is on a specific committee of jurisdiction over an issue. Committee assignments matter, and members of committees of jurisdiction sometimes have more influence than members off-committee. But that makes it all the more important that constituents of that MoC make phone calls to them—not that everyone makes phone calls to them.
000
James @moderntuba.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
But wait, aren’t there exceptions?
No. There are no exceptions. Not even if:

- The issue is of national importance. Many issues are, and votes taken by Senators certainly affect all Americans, not just constituents from their state. But calling from out of district/state is still counterproductive for all of the reasons above, no matter how much national significance an issue carries.

- The MoC is in House or Senate leadership. Yes, majority and minority leaders and other members of leadership are in charge of their entire caucuses, and they hold more influence and power than anyone else in their party. But that still doesn’t mean they care what people who aren’t their constituents think—they don’t. You should only call Nancy Pelosi if you live in California’s 12th Congressional district. You should only call Mitch McConnell if you live in Kentucky. And you should only call Chuck Schumer if you live in New York, for all of the same reasons above.

11 years ago, I left this Yelp review for this House of LIES. I stand by it!
Reviews
House of Pies

This may be called House of Pies, but perhaps it would be appropriately renamed HOUSE OF LIES ...

Pie day (March 14th, or 3.14 for those of you who don't know) is a holiday in my household. We love pie. We've even been to Pie Town, New Mexico (look it up). Today was a special day.
Every year, my wife and | go some place for pie in geeky celebration of it, and this year was the most important one of the century, because on March 14, 2015 at 9:26:53, it became 3.141592653, and we went there from Westwood to celebrate at the right time.

It was an utter, utter disappointment. I mean ... HOW DOES A RESTAURANT NAMED HOUSE OF PIES RUN OUT OF PIES? ON PIE DAY?!Really? Could you imagine if the House of Pancakes suddenly said, "Whoops, no more pancakes today, guys!"

And pie was all we went for, not even cruddy diner food.
We were seated at a booth, looking over the myriad options on the menu and planning our approach ... We debated with each other and finally settled on slices of the butterscotch and apple crumble.

Then the waitress dropped the bad news. "We are all out of pie." What? Huh? I don't understand ... "We have some cheesecake left." CHEESECAKE? on PIE DAY? And we HATE cheesecake. Was she sure? "I think we have a slice of the Bavarian chocolate cream left," she told us. Desperate, we agreed to one slice. It was the worst piece of pie I've had in a long time. It was a shitty piece of very inferior chocolate whip of the worst variety-nothing creamy about it. It was just like a loose chocolate cool whip.
Ugh. I'm pretty sure that's not how it is in the German free state of Bavaria.

Shame shame shame on them.

This is covered in the article that accompanied the post, which I highly recommend you read. Compelling stuff. I love Public Domain Day!
Sound recordings within a movie are treated differently from separate sound recordings because copyright law's definition of "sound recording" specifically excludes "sounds accompanying a motion picture." So the 1930 recordings as they appeared in the film King of Jazz have the same copyright term as the movie and are public domain in 2026, while regular sound recordings from 1930 that were independent of motion pictures have the 100-year term and their copyrights won't expire until 2031.
