For step through frame e-bikes, it can be really hard to find a spot where you’re able to frame lock, other than that they rock!

I agree. Tom has gone too far. Engage in some self control man

America is right down in the muck with the rest of us. Whether you meant it that way or not your post left a bad taste in my mouth hence the response. Like I said, the future looks bleak for us all

There is a certain refusal to truly acknowledge just how bad the damage and destruction being wrought onto the rest of the world by their country (you see it constantly in the Canada discourse) really is. Always a kernel of moral superiority and of being the hero.

But as someone who has lived in both Europe and America for over a decade each, I’ve found that Americans can have a real holier than thou streak, even when they are living under a government they personally despise.

What’s going on in Europe is a nightmare that fills me with dread every day, meanwhile the US is currently carrying out many of the maximalist demands of some of our worst parties, whether that’s because of genuine sentiment, or a shitty electoral system, I can’t say. Maybe it’s both?

modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I never pretended the US was an outlier and to claim so is disingenuous. My problem with your post is that in my eyes, it comes off as a minimization of what’s going on in America.

Has removed webpages that celebrated historical figures who were POC, removed exhibits referring to POC from the Smithsonian, etc., the list goes on, and after all of that the GOP still polls best on immigration. I mean Maine nearly elected a merc with an as tattoo as a Democrat!

Meanwhile, the current gov. of the US actively supports the AFD, has masked men sending people to camps in countries they’ve never been to before, has stopped taking in refugees that aren’t white South Africans, is currently removing POC from leadership roles in the military,

Considering Saxon-Anhalt has around 2.5% of Germany’s population I’m not sure that you can draw that conclusion from what’s happened.

I think German as spoken has changed quite a lot in recent times, especially in the younger generations (Denglish is damn near standard these days). The official materials, at least in my eyes, very much lean into how you might expect Dieter age 63 to speak on a buisness call

I was helping a friend with their German homework once and half the time I just had to say "sorry bro, I have never seen another acutal human being say this before in my life".

not sure how common this actually is? I usually just say each individual number and pretty much everyone else I know does the same. Not necessarilly saying this is straight up wrong because I may very well be just completely oblivious and never noticed.

I mean, what's going on in britain is absolutley disgusting, but I would say the US is curently the leader in that ugly race, no? Americans elected a man that already tried to overthrow an election, and is now deporting thousands using secret police, all aided by a joke of a supreme court

Unfortunately, I see very little in die Linke’s platform to suggest that they will do anything to solve that problem. Mamdani has taken a very YIMBY attitude towards building housing in NYC, die Linke more often than not takes the opposite route.

modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
That’s not even addressing that when people complain (rightly so) about the housing market one of the chief complaints in a place like Berlin is that it can take upwards of a year (sometimes never) to even get housing drastically reducing people’s agency and mobility in their lives
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Private rents will stay extremely elevated and those who need social housing who don’t already have it will wait years upon years to receive it.
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I can’t help but think that the money would be far better spent in building new social housing rather than socializing currently existing buildings. Berlin has a vacancy rate near zero and while lowering rents for people will be nice for those affected it does very little to solve the problem

It definitely played a massive role. Unfortunately, their plans will likely not be at all helpful for lowering prices. Something that very few parties in Germany want to admit is that you actually have to build more housing when faced with a vacancy rate of close to 0%.

What are your thoughts for what a reform should look like? I personally lean towards lowering the threshold and adding ranked choice so that if your preferred party doesn’t make it your vote isn’t complete garbage.

When waiting for the train doors to open, they will stand directly in front, in an amorphous cloud, preventing people from leaving the very opening they are trying to enter. They will do this every single time, never learning, for eternity.

Meanwhile, I will orient my bike in the most insane ways to be able to lock it through the frame to something solid, especially considering the maddening decision of having almost all of the bike racks at the stores set up for front wheel locking. They look something like this
030
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
While I do admittedly live in a very low risk area for bike theft, my jaw consistantly drops to the floor when I see how some people here secure their 3500$ ebikes. Very common to see them just stood on their kickstand with a cable lock through the front tire attatched to nothing
110
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
If I go by bike I can be back home with 5 days of groceries in less than 10 minutes. Though I am a bit of a grocery sicko I stalk through the isles like a cheetah with a coupon book
010
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
And if you stretch it to a 1km radius there are three more grocery stores, a pharmacy, a clothing store, 3 bakeries/cafes, and an electronics shop. It’s super fast to just pop down and grab some groceries real quick. I’ve timed it, and if it’s a smaller run, I can do a grocery trip in 12 min by foot
130
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Also way more likely to live in closer proximity to a variety of stores leading to more frequent smaller grocery runs. I live in a small village/satellite town in Germany and have 2 grocery stores within a 500 meter walk as well as a hardware store

modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
That being said I think the best solution would probably be to lower the speed limit rather than increasing e-bike speeds
000
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
One of the best things about e-bikes is being able to easily keep up with traffic in the city so having your bike capped at 5kph below the limit for most calmed streets feels like it invites a potential for conflicts between motorists and cyclists
111
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Here in the EU the limit is 25kph and I mostly find that to be fine. Though one thing that irritates me is that here in Germany a “bike street” has a 30kph speed limit so it feels odd to cap it a 25 for an e-bike
130
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Definitely feels too fast for me, and I used to be pretty into mountain biking. For an urban environment it just doesn’t seem to fit very well.

It tells you quite a bit about both considering the American government’s open support of the AFD
020
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Yeah, when a lot of the big names in the Dem establishment, as well as the new up-and-comers, seem to be agnostic at best about a return to a more imperialist way of doing things, it doesn’t exactly fill the heart with hope
110
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I doubt the FDP would have been able to maintain its position had the CDU come out in support of a debt break suspension. They had already agreed to take on debt from the KTF before the constitutional court shut that idea down
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
When faced with a similar scenario in the opposition the Greens put country first and voted to suspend the debt break for the good of the country, an act of good will that the current government is completely squandering
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
How the CDU behaved was completely unacceptable and damaged this country financially and politically for years to come.
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I expect the opposition to act in its own interest more often than not but when the country is faced with a poly crisis mostly of your own party’s creation I would expect a minimum effort to at least attempt to find compromise to stem the bleeding rather than a further slicing of the knife
110
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
The debt break should have been fully suspended in 2022 when the war broke out and the energy crisis began. That’s 2-3 years of missed economic growth and 2 years of not being able to appropriately spend on infrastructure and defense
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Those months also matter a lot when the largest conflict in Europe since world war 2 breaks out and your military is completely incapable and urgently needs to get into a more ready state to deter a wider conflict as well as support the victim with military equipment
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
First of all it was more than a few months second of all those months are extremely valuable when it comes to a massive economic stimulus. That’s the difference between hundreds/thousands of bankruptcies and and an economic rebound.

Merz and Co. put power and party before the country and now we’re suffering for it
100
modal-fair.bsky.social @modal-fair.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Well, he acted in an extremely destabilizing way when he was in the opposition. Had he not fought so hard against suspending the debt brake (which he suspended the second he won the election) Germany would be in a much better spot financially and militarily.
