The UK had a huge self-interest in supporting the bailout of the Irish banks by the Irish taxpayers (which is what the loans at commercial rates went to support). Many UK financial institutions were massively exposed to bankruptcy of the Irish banks whose fecklessness they had enabled. No charity...

Except it's not really, is it? Total journey time will be at least double that of a car trip given the respective station locations (they make Old Oak Common look central) and lack of local onward public transport. So you can't avoid Dubai traffic, which would be the biggest draw.

This sounds very like exceptionalism. The UK economy is actually not substantially different nor is it ever likely to be, than the EU median. So the notional value of BoE independence is worth mitigating the far higher risk of a run on independent sterling and UK gov bonds?

UK as a contributing voice to ECB would potentially be more useful to UK economy than an "independent" BoE, much as it used to be on developing regulations and standards across all sectors

Interest rates are an increasingly weak influencer on modern interlinked global economies viz. 2022. But please consider the relative BoE and ECB interest rate movements since, say, 2010 and tell me how following ECB policy would have made any meaningful difference to UK economic performance?

I've not seen cogent economic case against joining €, now proven resilient. Control is a fiction in 2020s. Eliminating uncertainty in trade, especially commodities will be a huge productivity gain, boosting € credentials as reserve currency, alternative to flaky $/US, declining significance of oil

The hyperbole is projecting "never happen" from present reality. I remain (happily) shocked at the dramatic shift in opinion and climate on LGBTQ rights (albeit with recent sad regression on T) that happened in barely a decade from the mid 90s. When the shift comes, it is often sudden.

You're using hyperbolic language that you have fairly criticised others for. "Zero interest in" = a largely un/misinformed group (UK voters' shocking lack of basic understanding of the EU) with a portion - who knows how many - of potential persuadables (especially younger less imperial nostalgists)

Yes, how long will English exceptionalism continue to trump obvious economic and societal self-interest? And the EU won't be opening their doors, whatever the excitable noises from various individuals, until rejoin has a broad political consensus, though this could reappear quickly I guess

Mobile Relic @mobilerelic.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
30 odd % for rejoin regardless is not nothing: a base from which to make the argument. There are strong factual cases to be made for benefits of euro (especially) and schengen which nobody is doing. The challenge is that the opposition to both is based largely around emotional aspects of "control"

Even at the time, there was clearly some pretty nasty stuff in Fawlty Towers. The bitter angry misogyny, of course, with Sybil, the harridan. And the portrayals of ethnic characters: Manuel, above all, but others, notably the Irish builder, all driven by noxious 1970s racist stereotypes.

And this is actually one of the clearer pieces of communication...the whole 0207/0208 thing still lives

Mobile Relic @mobilerelic.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Having lived through it, I have to say the London prefix change featured what was, by far, the worst major public communication campaign in my (six decade plus) lifetime. It was confusing and provided wrong information. That legacy is still evident, though fortunately of diminishing importance.

I was there two years ago. It has been protected (particularly by the locals) so avoided war damage. It is a bit more overgrown than in the photos but still amazing.

You're doing it again: now it looks disingenuous. Yes "liberal" outlets piled on & many failed Arday but this was fundamentally a racist right wing attack and it exposed how racist UK media, commentators and institutions are, including the smug liberal establishment, by their complicity. "What, me?"

Disappointed that you would "both sides" this....pretty clear where pretty much all the blame lies. Remember all those media storms about the (many well-supported) plagiarism accusations against white academics? Thought not

Or, maybe consider the views of the people who actually practice it? (Attached from the wikipedia article you linked). I will charitably refuse to consider your position as yet more British interference in our electoral processes. 😉 We say potato...

It's STV - you may be too hung up on the word proportional. The process is identical to voting for multi-member Dáil constituencies: the ballot paper contains all the candidates' names; voters can indicate their preference as far down as they wish; the candidate who reaches the quota is elected.
110
Mobile Relic @mobilerelic.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Er, yes you can of course. Example: Irish Presidency, PR by STV - like all national elections in Ireland thanks to the departing British administration seeking to avoid a repetition of Sinn Féin's FPTP clean-up in the 1918 elections

Fared, I have been following you for somz time but now you are inadvertently helping amplify a Russian disinformation campaign. There is no open travel from Ceuta to EU/Spain: very thorough border checks for all. Meanwhile almost all of those who recently crossed have now returned home to Morocco.

And the big part of the story that you are missing is that by far the most of them (80%+ and growing) have now returned to Morocco

She lets lots of much more outrageous nonsense fly by...compromising responsible journalism for the exclusive heavily promoted interview (putting Musk on their cover!). They have been careering downhill for some time but this is a new low to which the smugly high and mighty Economist has fallen.

Mobile Relic @mobilerelic.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
Also this pathetic fawning by the Economist editor, presumably to enable a big scoop interview (as it is being heavily promoted), shreds any remaining journalistic credibility of that smug bastion of neoliberal dinosaurs who still haven't twigged that they will be first on the facist fires

And again, my feelings about these issues are not the point (though I have written to my MP). Starmer is viscerally hated by far more right leaning voters than lefties and it appears to be due to a successful and barely visible misinformation campaign. Next PM will face this also for sure.

Escape your sanctimonious bubble for just a minute. None of this is why he is so hated by a wide swathe of the electorate, whom those policies were designed to assuage. Something else is afoot - views are being swayed surreptitiously. It will happen to every Labour/left leader if not confronted.
100
Mobile Relic @mobilerelic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
Again, it's not being baffled by unpopularity, it's about the depth of sheer unvarnished hatred. Your superficial polls and analysis are completely missing something fundamental going on below the surface.
100
Mobile Relic @mobilerelic.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
It's not bafflement at his unpopularity, but at the depth of hatred he incurred from people in no way negatively impacted by any of his policies - indeed mostly the very people they were designed to appease. And discomfort that ostensible lefties are relishing the outcome of a clearly far-right coup

What about the holy spirit, an intrinsic part of the trinitarian god that was anciently portrayed as feminine (wisdom - sophia)? And the merging of Yahweh with his consort Asherah? It's not recent wokeness, it's reopening what medieval christianity deliberately suppressed.

I know LGBT asylum seekers from dangerous countries who are afraid to divulge their sexuality to the Home Office. I suspect this is a bigger issue than fake claims. More disgusting BBC sensationalist pandering to the right wing, which is just creating extra jeopardy for very vulnerable people.
