The problem is that the rain signal is more robust in the southeast US but this is being presented as a southwest drought buster, which is less certain (see here to compare impacts of 9 recent El Nino events: psl.noaa.gov/enso/differe...)

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility that this event is truly historic, but the certainty about it that has been proffered in the face of contradictory evidence drives me a little nuts

We also compare SST reconstructions of ENSO events several years ago here: www.ametsoc.net/eee/2016/ch4... . I couldn't help but notice that adding more early SST surface obs (updated COADS) boosted early Nino34 variance estimates, which makes me concerned with training used for coral recon.

Not to mention that recent work using modern data assimilation techniques with all paleoproxy data (not just the localized coral isotope subset) suggests that ENSO variability in the late 1800s/early 1900s was comparable to now, which is also consistent with the Darwin SLP record.

I've happily done research my entire career in a university...a lot of administrators are a waste of space, plus the difference between good teachers and good researchers is that the latter raise money for the school and get tenure...we overpaid for our kids good education for sure; reform is needed
