@jcbradbury.com: a little help, please. Imagine you found out your local senator supports public subsidies of a stadium and you, an academic, want to send them the best article summarizing the research on the impact of such projects. Which Bradbury article would you suggest? I’ll give a summary too.

I don’t know a single soul who believes “that students learn to think…only by writing.” What utter nonsense. But good news: I have a great example to use when teaching my students what a straw man argument is, whether in oral or written form.

As a first gen college student, I was shocked, then enraged, to learn that some people were using the hashtag #firstgen to refer to their hard haul as the first person to get their PhD. Says a lot about academia on a lot of different levels.

I get the temptation to mock his promise to pay every adult citizen in the US $5000, b/c he perpetually lies. But can we please focus on the fact that the President just openly promised a direct monetary payout in exchange for a political outcome he wants? It’s open bribery. That’s the real problem.

The United States: where giving a frail voter waiting in the Georgia sun a glass of water is punishable by a year in prison, but the president can offer everyone $5k to vote for his party.

Americans have had to pay an extra $95 BILLION for gasoline and diesel since President Trump decided to attack Iran on February 28, 2026. A war that hurts the global economy, undermines US power, creates hardship for working class, and helps the Iranian regime stay.🛢️🇺🇸 iranwarcost.watson.brown.edu

I remember reading in 1997 or so that Walmart had surpassed GM as the largest employer in the US and thinking that it was a really important switch. 30 years on, I think I was right.

And immigration, at least if we want growth, right? The administration is already doing this thing where they say jobs #s that range from meh to bad are actually ok because immigration is down. But in theory jobs numbers are about (un)employment rates and growth.

Seems like the best way to make this argument is to provide the actual evidence. But also, to discount the fact that many of these deals are bound to be bad kind of misses the point and pads the score in your favor.

As mentioned in my comment on USPS's new ballot rule, the American postal service was born in 1774 _because_ the alternative system (the Crown's post) let the executive decide which mail not to deliver. For a Court riveted by bespoke historical analogs, this rule is 252 years of unAmerican.

Housing is important and we need a lot more. But I don’t know of another policy where a group of people will stand up and boldly claim that Our Policy Will Fix Everything, as if all of society’s ills stem from restrictive zoning. Reality doesn’t align itself well with fundamentalism of any kind.

Today everyone — EVERYONE — should take a moment and read Ray Bradbury's four-page short story from 1950.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of
Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake. "Today is Mr.
Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable,
as are the water, gas, and light bills."
