Yes you should see Digger!

OUCH! (I'll still see it of course - but the trailer certainly DID NOT look good! 😨)

Fun movie - which I believe you discussed on the (sorely missed) Slate Flashback podcast!

Hey I'll just add a podcast-rec. Folks should know that TCM will launch tomorrow a new (11-episode) Season of The Plot Thickens podcast which will explore the life & career of the unique & amazing Stanley Kubrick! 👍👍

Mizoguchi of course also made meditative films set in remote alien Japanese history - but they have also have intimacy & dramatic vitality I don’t find in this K. Kurosawa film. 🤷‍♂️

Meant 1st word to be “Fortunately“ 😜

Thanks! Recently took my 2d look at Kurosawa’s widely praised recent film The Samurai and the Prisoner - & must say DID NOT change my mind about it. While admiring its skillful crafT, I remain cool to it. Can’t get dramatically caught up in it. Admittedly 16th century Japanese history alien to me.

I thought Dafoe was excellent in the film - but had a hard time caring about (or believing in) the “Enthusiasm Society“!

Often after telling you his original reaction to a film - maybe a week or 2 later he’d give you a re-evaluation (which might be significantly different!).

To clarify my objection to Griffin Newman (Blank Check podcast). I’d estimate he “drops the f-bomb” every 15-20 seconds! VERY tedious! . . . Dana Stevens once presided over an EXCELLENT old movie podcast “Flashback“ on Slate - but the higher-ups dropped it several years ago! 😡

To me it's just a weird attitude - never wanting the visceral pleasure of a REwatch! . . . . (Our old acquaintance critic Stuart Byron I found weird - he would often CHANGE his opinion/evaluation of a movie WITHOUT re-seeing it - but just from "thinking about it".)

Well the self-indulgent "banter" is a problem on many! That said: Grierson&Leitch are reliable for new movies. The Big Picture is worth a listen. The Rewatchables & Blank Check provide useful info & insights - tho the rhetorical style of Griffin Newman on Blank Check is APPALLING imo!

Ok. On movie podcasts I listen to, Kael is referenced (along with Ebert) more often than Sarris. Anyway one of Kael's weird quirks I remember: I believe she claimed she never saw any movie more than once 🤯- because she had "a perfect memory"!

She had her blind spots, of course - but a worthwhile critical voice. (She seems to be remembered more today than Andrew Sarris!)

Thanks to him, I've come round to appreciating such films as Now, Voyager (Irving Rapper, 1942).

I also recommended it to (fellow Chapel Hill resident) Cristiane Young. She missed it too!

I liked both Camp Miasma and Tony. Hope to see Late Fame this week. (Again recommend: THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING)

I actually saw this years ago - at the Museum of Modern Art! Wouldn't mind a rewatch! (Cohen's "It's Alive!" with John Ryan is pretty creepy.)

Dana - BE SURE to see the new film The Rivals of Amziah King (d. Andrew Patterson). One of the year's best!

OK - it probably won't be in theaters long. Pretty unusual - NOT a "general audience" film!

Good to know - I definitely want to see this! (Unfortunately I might have to see it at NYC Angelika - a theater I HATE! - their escalator has been busted for FIVE YEARS!)

OK thanks. Haven't seen in IMAX yet. Actually I was favorably impressed by the acting: Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo . . . .

Larry- There's a new documentary titled Wild Inside - about the (widely reported) 2023 saga of Flaco the Asian Eagle Owl which escaped from Zoo for 15 months of perilous "freedom" in Manhattan. Saw it yesterday. Quite worthwhile!

Ok without question he was an intellectual PIONEER writing in US in the early ‘60s! I am more impressed by his unconventional choices of directors to PRAISE (such Hawks, Sirk . . . ) than by those he chose to denigrate.

Could be. However (1) altho Andy was my initial mentor, I don't regard him as Infallible or an Ultimate Authority, & (2) he was quite willing to change his mind about some directors - such as Billy Wilder whom he initially ranked rather low - as he also did John Huston & Stanley Kubrick.

Ok. I saw it in 35mm. But I want to have 2d viewing in 70mm even tho I may have to wait 4-6 weeks. . . Do you find other Nolan films of interest? (It's obviously HIS IDIOSYNCRATIC interpretation of the story!)

Also of course you also once were FLASHBACK (which was real good for film classics!) . . . Absent that, I keep tabs on Blank Check & The Rewatchables (which are pretty entertaining & informative). And Grierson & Leitch occasionally do "Reboot" segments!

Ok free country! 😜 I still see films by any & all of those . . . I really liked Only God Forgives! . . . This latest one I'd say is his least substantial - but I still enjoyed it (greatly helped by a gorgeous Pino Donaggio score!) . . .He really DOES need to stop indulging the same obsessions tho
